2-D Call for Entry

Fire and earth are two of the four elements. This exhibit celebrates these elements in a hybrid show that combines a national ceramic cup exhibit with a regional 2-D exhibit. This exhibit honors how fire in the kiln (be it fueled by wood, gas, or electricity) transforms earth (clay) into functional drinking vessels (cups, mugs, tankards, tumblers, goblets, and tea bowls). The 2-D exhibit on the walls of the gallery should reflect and communicate about these elements and with the 3-D ceramic pieces. The 2-D work’s theme of illustrating the forces of nature allows a broad interpretation of how the natural elements affect our world, and echoes the process of the ceramic art.
Entry to this exhibit is by online submission. Art must be two-dimensional, and in any medium. No strict size limits but please be considerate of other artists and the physical limits of the gallery before entering oversize pieces. Oversized pieces of merit will be accepted if space permits. Art should be ready to hang or display with wire and screw eyes, framed, matted, or with edges finished. We cannot show work that is not ready for exhibition. About the Juror, Dan Finnegan
Dan Finnegan’s pottery career began more than 40 years ago. He studied at three different universities before making his way to the Winchecombe Pottery in Gloucestershire, England in the late 1970s. As part of Ray Finch’s pottery crew, he assisted in the production of wood-fired domestic ware inspired by Michael Cardew, the pottery’s founder. Dan returned to the US, and set up his first studio in Fredericksburg, VA. Since 1980, he has made thousands of useful stoneware pots, firing them in his two-chambered wood-fired kiln. Dan’s work is included in numerous collections and museums in the US and the UK as well as having been featured in a number of publications. His work is available at LibertyTown Arts Workshop, Fredericksburg, VA, several galleries and shows around the country, and his online shop. Dan has authored several articles and writes a popular blog about life as a working potter.
