From the entertainment offered in the City’s taverns in its earlier days to the internationally renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center of today, the arts have played a significant role in our City’s history. To ensure the continued prominence of these arts, the Alexandria City Council created the Alexandria Commission for the Arts in 1984, to lead and advocate for cultural development within the City of Alexandria and surrounding region, to stimulate artistic excellence and make these arts accessible to all Alexandrians.
The Virginia Commission for the Arts supports artistic excellence where it exists, encourages growth in artistic quality, and works to make this artistic excellence available to all Virginians.
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) was established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government. The NEA awards funds to support artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities. The NEA extends its work through partnerships with state arts agencies, local leaders, other federal agencies, and the philanthropic sector.
