SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: No Gaps or Overlaps: Learning Tessellation (Ages 8 and up)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is being rescheduled. New date coming soon. \nOnline Workshop: No Gaps or Overlaps: Learning Tessellation\nDate/Time: Tuesday\, June 22 and Thursday\, June 24 from 10-11am\nInstructor: Bridget Anthony-Hlioui\nClass size: 5-20 participants\n(Register by midnight on June 19) \nThis workshop was developed to teach young students the art of tessellation\, integrating measurement and geometric concepts. It addresses the need for online educational art activities that provide meaningful ways for students to connect with their world. Each individual session is held for one hour from 10-11am and is structured to accommodate younger attention spans while encouraging independent work after the first session. However\, all ages are welcome. \nThis workshop is taught by Bridget Anthony-Hlioui\, a veteran educator\, art curriculum developer\, Certified Art Therapy Life Coach\, and working artist who incorporates her love of geometry in her own artwork. \nParents know their children best; if your child will need assistance or encouragement\, Bridget will be happy to work with you so you can stay close during instruction. \nHousehold\, on-hands supplies are encouraged with suggested materials below: \n\nPencils\nEraser\nThick Paper (Instructor prefers Canson XL series Mixed Media)\n12-inch ruler\nIndex cards\nScissors\nScotch tape\nPaper towels\nBlack markers or pens (one Ultra-Fine Point Black Sharpie & one Fine Point Black Sharpie recommended)\nAn easily controllable medium to add color. (This depends on the student’s skills and availability. Anything from crayons\, markers\, to watercolor suggested next.)\nWatercolor pencils (A basic set) -OR- Watercolors and brush set (Instructor recommends Palitra Brush Set)\nSmall cup of water\nSmall hair dryer is not a must but very helpful\n\nRegister Now \n \n\nView other upcoming workshops\, information about the facility\, and policies on the Upcoming Workshops page.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Our National Symbol – an evidence based argument for why salamanders should replace the bald eagle (FREE)
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Erin AnthonyDate: Thursday\, June 10 from 6:30-7:30pm\nClass size: 1-100 participants\n(Register by 4:30pm on June 10) \nThe bald eagle has long been our national symbol – a species common throughout North America. But I believe that Americans are a more unique breed\, and our symbol should reflect that. Virginia\, Tennessee\, and North Carolina are blessed with being the global biodiversity hotspot for salamanders. Nowhere in the world has as many. In this talk\, I will tell you why Americans are better represented by salamanders than by the bald eagle. \nAbout the Presenter: Erin Anthony is currently serving as Vice President of the Virginia Herpetological Society\, a volunteer run non-profit dedicated to the conservation and education of native reptiles and amphibians. She works as a sustainability coordinator and middle school science teacher at a private school on the eastern shore of Virginia. \nThis presentation is brought to you by the Virginia Herpetological Society (VHS) and Del Ray Artisans\, both 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations\, in conjunction with the The Naked and the Newt: Humans and Herpetons art exhibit. \nThe presentation is FREE; donations are appreciated. You may donate via the registration page (select “Register” and choose donation amount). \nThis presentation will be online through the Zoom platform. Registered participants will be sent the connection information via email two days before the presentation and again one hour before the presentation. You may attend on a computer\, tablet\, or smartphone. \nRegister Now \n.\n\nView other upcoming workshops\, information about the facility\, and policies on the Upcoming Workshops page.
