SUMMARY:“The Art of Nature” Exhibit Opening Day Appointments
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Nature Art ExhibitMay 7–29\, 2021\n“Magnolia Blossom at Dusk” by Cynthia Schoeppel\nFor centuries\, nature has been an influential factor in the creation of artwork by artists. As more national and international discussion has centered around environmental concerns\, The Art of Nature is an art exhibit that reminds us of the gift Mother Earth has given us\, the beauty of nature. Artists in this exhibition share their interpretations of the natural world around us\, whether it be on the animals who make their homes in nature\, water that brings life to riverbeds or beaches and the vegetation\, plants and trees that add color to our world. \nReserve a ticket for half-hour viewing during extended hours on opening day: Friday\, May 7 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \nAlso in May\, the following workshops are offered to Del Ray Artisans members and non-members in conjunction with the exhibit: \nZentangle and The Art of Nature\, Sunday\, May 9 from 1-3pm\nThe Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn\, relaxing\, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It increases focus\, creativity\, self-confidence and well-being. Marisela Rumberg is a Certified Zentangle Teacher and will guide you through this creative process. No previous experience in drawing or art is required. You can do it\, and you will love it! This workshop is offered via Zoom. \nOriental Brush Painting Nature\, Tuesday\, May 11 from 7-9pm\nLearn to paint a few basic strokes using ink and color on rice paper to create beautiful roses. In this oriental art technique you will load your brush in layers of color. When you put your brush to the paper the colors come out in the reverse order on the paper. This art form is “food for the soul”—it is active meditation that teaches you to use your chi (energy) to produce a freestyle\, beautiful piece of art. A picture of the subject will be emailed to all participants to follow during the class. You will set up your table to paint as the instructor guides you along with step-by-step directions and checks each participant’s progress from time to time. This workshop is offered via Zoom. \nWatercolor Painting Dewy Leaves\, Friday\, May 14 from 6-8pm\nLearn to use watercolor techniques such as wet in wet\, salt texture\, lifting\, and scratching to paint beautiful leaves. After painting leaves you will add realistic dew drops. They are so fun and easy you will soon be adding dew drops to all of your paintings! This workshop is offered via Zoom. \nPastel Painting Nature\, Sunday\, May 16 from 12:30-3:30pm\nHave fun learning pastel painting! Pastels are a fun and forgiving medium to use. Whether you are trying this medium for the first time or have experience you want to build on\, this workshop is for you. Through demonstrations and hands-on activities you will learn pastel painting techniques such as layering\, blending\, and mark-making to create beautiful nature scenes. You will also paint on different types of pastel paper including sanded paper. This workshop is offered in-person at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Limited to 8 students. Walk-ins are not allowed. \nRegister in advance for workshops at DelRayArtisans.org/workshops/ \nThe Art of Nature exhibit runs May 7–29\, 2021 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. \nRegular gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-6pm\, and Saturdays 12-4pm. Del Ray Artisans is ALX Promise certified and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. Please wear a face mask and maintain 6′ of personal space. \nFor more information\, contact the curator Cynthia Schoeppel (schoeppc@hotmail.com) or Director of Curating Kelly Postula (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org).

SUMMARY:The COVID-19 HOPE Quilt Letters at Del Ray Artisans (10/6/2020 – 4/30/2021)
DESCRIPTION:HOPE Quilt Project Founder Diane Canney with Athena who painted a quilt panel; Photo courtesy of Kelly MacConomy\nDuring this historic moment\, the COVID-19 pandemic poses an unprecedented national crisis. The COVID-19 HOPE Quilt\, a grass roots community art project\, was launched by Diane Canney in response to national sentiments of grief and uncertainty. \nFor hundreds of years\, quilts have been part of the fabric of America. Mourning quilts were used to wrap infants and adults who died. Valor quilts honor veterans. They provide comfort\, remembrance\, and an historical record passed down for generations. Now when communal grieving is not possible\, the quilt panels help tell the story of those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Quilt panel contributions are being accepted from around the country to provide an outlet for grief and to document heroism in fighting the outbreak. \nMother and daughter creating a panel for the COVID-19 HOPE Quilt; Photo courtesy of Dawn Wyse Hurto\nOn November 21 Del Ray Artisans hosted the COVID-19 HOPE Quilt Founder Diane Canney in a paint-a-panel event outside the gallery. At sunset there was a candle and holiday lighting tribute honoring the frontline workers and the lives lost as well as marked by COVID-19. \nFrom now until January 19\, 2021 Del Ray Artisans nonprofit will receive a $5 donation for each artist member submitting an artisanal/handcrafted 10.5 x 10.5″ panel created to expressly honor a front-line worker or a person in memoriam. Artistic efforts representing HOPE for the future are also welcome and encouraged. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to create panels. You may drop off panel artwork at the gallery to be delivered to the HOPE Quilt for assembly. One of the first HOPE Quilts assembled this fall was on display during the paint-a-panel event. \nHigh-resolution digital image entries of three-dimensional or mixed-media work may also be uploaded to the website for transfer to fabric. All submissions will be on exhibit at the virtual gallery on the HOPE Quilt website (www.hopequilt.org). Fabric is available for creative use at the gallery but any fabric or fiber work is acceptable. Squares should be 10.5″ x 10.5″ (or 11″ x 11″) unless the artwork submitted is via photographic image\, then it should be formatted square. \nDel Ray Artisans members with the HOPE Letters installation; Photo courtesy of Sean Crumley\n“To go” materials are available in Del Ray Artisans entryway for anyone interested in working on a panel from home. Materials include properly sized fabric\, information about the project\, and an entry form. Finished panels may be returned to Del Ray Artisans during regular hours. In December the gallery is open the first three weekends on Fridays 6-9pm\, Saturdays & Sundays 11am-6pm. The gallery is closed December 21\, 2020 through January 6\, 2021. Starting January 7 the gallery is open on Thursdays & Fridays 12-6pm\, Saturdays 12-4pm. Alternatively\, you may mail your square to COVID19 HOPE QUILT PROJECT\, P.O Box 2610\, Purcellville\, VA 20134. \nThe 8-foot tall HOPE installation will remain on display outside Del Ray Artisans from October 6\, 2020 through April 30\, 2021. Many of the quilt panels were contributed by Del Ray Artisans members already\, including panels by Guy Jones\, Kelly MacConomy\, Scott MacConomy\, Terry Atkin Rowe\, Karen Schmitz\, Kathy Turner\, and Nina Tisara. \nFor more information\, contact Kelly MacConomy at outreach@delrayartisans.org.

SUMMARY:“Unfinished/Finished” Exhibit Opening Day Appointments
DESCRIPTION:Unfinished/Finished Art ExhibitApril 2 – May 1\, 2021\n“Beauty and the Background” by Michael Green (left\, starting artist) and Eileen M. O’Brien (right\, finishing artist)\nMany artists are notorious for having oodles of unfinished pieces hidden in their workspaces. In preparation for this exhibit\, unfinished works were given to different artists to complete. The Unfinished/Finished art exhibit showcases how these partnerships yield impressive finished artworks by local artists and high school students. Come explore the notion of when and how a work of art is “finished.” Note how the “start” inspired the “finished” piece. The overall concept offered a fun and safe way for artists to collaborate\, given the isolation we have all experienced due to the pandemic. Some of the artists paired up with an artist they knew\, while others signed up to be randomly paired with another artist. All artists brought a “started” piece to a “finished” state. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, April 2 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \nThree special events are held in conjunction with this exhibit: \nSpeed-Painting with Friends on Sunday\, March 14 between 3-6pm. In this free activity\, artists will use small canvas boards and take turns painting\, with each artist building on the prior artist’s work. No art experience necessary! The artwork created during this event will be displayed as part of Del Ray Artisans’ April exhibit\, Unfinished/Finished\, with proceeds supporting our non-profit arts organization. Due to pandemic restrictions\, registration is required. The event is currently full; check the registration page for last-minute openings. \nSketchy: How to Not Finish a Drawing Workshop on Saturday\, April 17 from 10am-Noon. Instructor Margaret Wohler will lead participants through a series of short\, fast\, drawing techniques that will enhance observational skills and focus on natural subjects. Participants will explore blind contour\, gesture\, and drawing-by-feel techniques along with meditative mindful drawing. The workshop is $25 for Del Ray Artisans members and $35 for non-members; plus drawing kits will be available for purchase for $25. This workshop will be held outside the gallery\, weather permitting. Register at sketchy-workshop.eventbrite.com \nMusic As Muse: Inspired Painting Workshop on Saturday\, April 24 from 2-4pm. Join us for a day of painting inspired by music led by Nancy Ramsey! We will create loose abstract acrylics\, painting along to music. We’ll create gestural movements in time to the music and create a record of them in paint. Working with three small canvases simultaneously\, we’ll do a rotation by removing one of the paintings and continuing to work on the remaining ones. Then we’ll pick a final painting to continue to work on. At the end\, we will have a series of three paintings in a progression of completion—some left more “unfinished” than others. This workshop will be held outside the gallery\, weather permitting. Register at music-as-muse.eventbrite.com \n.\nThe Unfinished/Finished art exhibit runs April 2 – May 1\, 2021 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. \nFor more information\, contact the curator Eileen O’Brien (artbyeileenm@gmail.com) or Director of Curating Kelly Postula (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org).

SUMMARY:“After Edward Hopper” Exhibit Opening Day Appointments
DESCRIPTION:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation Art ExhibitFebruary 5 – 27\, 2021\n“COVID Nighthawks reimagined” by Kelly MacConomy\nThe great American painter Edward Hopper is famous for his canvases depicting the isolationist urban landscape as well as the sweeping solitude and unpopulated vacancy of the dunes of Cape Cod. His 1942 painting “Nighthawks” is Hopper’s most recognizable work. It is the visual narrative of a late-night New York City Greenwich Village diner scene\, bereft of a bustling business\, depicting three solo customers and a solemn soda jerk. \nIn the time of COVID-19\, quarantines\, shutdowns\, lockdowns\, orders of stay-at-home and safer-at-home have created a climate of extreme alienation and social deprivation. After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation is the member-only show at Del Ray Artisans opening Friday\, February 5 and on exhibit until Saturday\, February 27\, 2021. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, February 5 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \n“Homage Bar” by Gordon Thomas Frank\nArtists present their interpretations of what makes Hopper’s imagery quintessentially American: perseverance\, fortitude\, diversity\, and an egalitarian spirit in spite of adversity\, impoverishment\, and social injustice. As February advances into the new year and a new hope\, this show expresses the anthem of a new dawn: still we rise as one\, stronger together. \nThe After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation exhibit is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Regular gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-6pm\, and Saturdays 12-4pm. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. SUMMARY:Hidden World (1/8-1/30)
DESCRIPTION:Hidden World Art Exhibit\nJanuary 8 – 30\, 2021\n“The Eye of the Abyss” by Nancy M. Galib\nView Online \nThe Hidden World art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans is a visual representation of things that are not readily visible in our ordinary lives—an exploration of microscopic organisms\, macro depictions of nature\, the metaphysical world\, emotions\, sounds\, and more. \nWe have all been affected – in one way or another – by an unseen and mysterious virus. But even these pathogens\, when revealed under a microscope\, have their own hidden\, but awful\, beauty. It challenges us to look at our world more deeply and with new eyes. \nWhether it is the mysteries of the universe\, or just something in your own backyard\, the world is rife with surprises waiting to be uncovered. The artists in this exhibit looked deeply into the world\, into their emotions\, or just into their imagination to uncover some part of the Hidden World. You are called to explore what the exhibit reveals to you. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, January 8 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \nVisit the gallery to see the artwork in person or view the online photo album. Congratulations to the award winners: \n\nBest in Show – “Bubble Up” by Mary Elizabeth Gosselink\nCurator’s Choice – “Ebbs and Flows of Exploration” by Ada Oppengeim\nMost Inventive – “Meeting of the Minds” by Danny Robbins\nHonorable Mention – “Horizons” by Joseph Schultz\n\nRegister now for these special workshops held in conjunction with the exhibit: \nHidden World: Collage in a Box with Susan Farrer on Sunday\, January 10 from 1:30-4:30pm. Capture your ideas and images by creating a “hidden world” collage that tucks into a 7.5 x 10″ wooden box with a hinged lid. Learn about collage materials and techniques as you combine pictures of what’s important to you – whether something experienced in the natural world (people\, plants\, animals\, birds\, insects\, even microscopic organisms)\, or in your personal or inner emotional world. The finished box will be ready to hang on a wall or display on a table. No experience needed! (Register by January 5) \nHidden Layers: The Joys of Gel Printing with Eileen O’Brien on Sunday\, January 24 from 3-6pm. Gel plate printing is a fun and easy way to create beautiful one-of-a-kind prints without a press.
