DESCRIPTION:Photo Album \nThe Alcove Gift Shop is open for 10 months of the year (closed in July and December for special events). New items will appear in the gift shop each week\, and all the artwork is fully refreshed every two months. The current display runs March 4 – April 30\, 2022. \nAll work featured in the gift shop is by Del Ray Artisans members. Unframed 2-D work is available in bins alongside jewelry\, fiber art\, wood craft\, ceramics\, and other smaller 3-D items. The gift shop is located in the alcove inside Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. \nThe gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. The gallery capacity is limited to 15 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. Del Ray Artisans has taken the ALX Promise pledge and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. Face masks must be worn by all while visiting the gallery. \nGallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-9pm\, Saturdays 12-6pm\, and Sundays 12-6pm. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop … no need to rush\, which is one of the first lessons in using resin! \nThis workshop does not get into using dyes with resin or building big molds to create one-of-a-kind resined tables (as seen on YouTube)\, but this workshop will provide you with a good understanding of how resin works so you can be bold enough to take the next steps in your creative interests. \nAlthough the class is listed for 3 hours\, you can leave once you have finished your creations. Some students finish very quickly while others take the whole 3 hours to create – there is plenty of time for each person to enjoy the creative process while not feeling rushed. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop\, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. \nThe workshop is designed for adults. Attending jewelers work in sterling silver – they can fix a gold piece\, although the replacement clasp or loop will not be in gold.\nYou will be paired with one of our on-site jewelry artists who will quickly assess what your item needs and repair it. If the piece cannot be repaired on Fix-It Nite\, the artist will discuss repair options. This is a hands-on class by Rest in Pieces owner Justin Torone. Learn how to rehydrate\, spread\, and pin your very own Day Flying Moth (Alcides orontes). This is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge on this meticulous craft. \nAll necessary supplies will be provided. You will leave at the end of the class with your own pinned specimen. Class end times are approximate. Specimens will require a drying period prior to mounting them either in the frame provided by us\, or the vessel of your choosing. Instructions on finishing your specimen will be given at the end of the class and in a take home sheet. \nParticipants may bring collage materials if desired for their backgrounds. From 6-6:30pm participants may prepare a collage background for their moths. This self-directed time is optional. The insect pinning instruction begins at 6:30pm. \nAges 16+ or 12+ accompanied by an adult. Face masks and proof of vaccination are required for this workshop and will be reviewed by the instructor. \nRegister Now \nNOTE FROM THE INSTRUCTOR: Our insects are farm raised. In order to maintain populations\, females are brought in from the wild to lay their eggs inside a lofty enclosed habitat. This process keeps her and her babies safe from disease\, parasites and predators. A female butterfly is able to lay thousands of eggs and the chance of survival dramatically increases by giving them a safe space to do so! Once they reach adulthood\, most of them are released back into the wild to supplement the native populations. When the time comes and the insect passes\, most will be used to further DNA\, evolution\, mutation and disease studies. The others will be sold to museums\, universities and stores like us. Kids aged 10 and up are welcome to come out and learn beginning bead weaving as they make a daisy chain bracelet or necklace. Learning the daisy chain stitch is a great way to make a fun project while developing needle handling skills and learning how to manage your thread. \nThe instructor will provide hands-on demonstrations and individual assistance\, as well as instructions with photos and text. Instructions include age and skill appropriate variations. \nNeedles and thread are available to all participants. Bead kits are available upon request (please allow 1 week’s notice to ensure materials availability) or bring your own supplies. \nPurchase a $10 bead kit or bring these supplies: \n\nAt least 2 colors of size 11/0 or size 8/0 seed beads\n\nSelect the most uniform beads you can find for a smoother result.\nSize 8/0 are larger and better for younger kids\, folks who have low vision\, and those with no needlework experience.\nSize 11/0 beads are smaller and will make a more delicate necklace or bracelet.\n\n\nBeading thread\n\nSelect a thinner thread for size 11/0 seed beads.\nIf you use larger beads\, get a thicker thread to help fill the larger hole in the beads.\nRecommend 6 or 8lb Fireline or Wildfire in a color to coordinate with the color of your beads. DESCRIPTION:The ONLINE afternoon program is FULL; do not drop-in. The March 7th meeting will be the first in-person meeting of 2022.\n \nIf you would like to join the evening program that is currently sharing feedback via email and/or in person\, contact Michele Reday Cook (mredaycook@gmail.com) for information and registration. \nNeed support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. Monthly meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities\, the creative process and the local art scene. Artist can bring 1-3 works – complete or in progress – for feedback. All skill levels and media welcome. \nThis program is free\, but donations ($1-3) are greatly appreciated. SUMMARY:“Flora & Fauna” Art Exhibit Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Flora & Fauna Art ExhibitMarch 4–26\, 2022\nThe Flora & Fauna art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery explores the interdependence of plants and animals\, combining art and environmental science. In recent years\, climate change and pollution have endangered the complex interactions between plants and animals. \nPollinators (birds\, bats\, bees\, butterflies\, beetles\, and other small mammals) are vital to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many rely on for food and shelter. Plants like almond trees\, berry bushes and flowers need pollinators to survive and reproduce. Large animals\, like giraffes and elephants\, rely on plants for food\, shelter\, and shade to protect them from the environment and predators. This art exhibit is focused on exploring and showing these connections. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, March 4\, between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork by local artists. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. \nHeld in conjunction with this exhibit\, register for the free online talk by Master Naturalist Chris Allgyer about Dragonflies and Damselflies of Virginia on Wednesday\, March 9 from 7-8pm. \nHave you always wanted to try your hand at floristry? Register now for the “Flowers Everywhere!” workshop on Saturday\, March 19 from 6:30-8:30pm.
