SUMMARY:Creative Book Club – “Studio of the South: Van Gogh in Provence” by Martin Bailey
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Studio of the South: Van Gogh in Provence” by Martin Bailey\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, May 18 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nJoin us to discuss “Studio of the South: Van Gogh in Provence” by Martin Bailey. The book tells the story of Van Gogh’s stay in Arles. \n“For Van Gogh\, the south of France was an exciting new land\, bursting with life. He walked into the hills inspired by the landscapes\, and painted harvest scenes in the heat of summer. He visited a fishing village where he saw the Mediterranean for the first time\, energetically capturing it in paint. He painted portraits of friends and locals\, and flower still life paintings\, culminating in the now iconic Sunflowers. He rented the Yellow House\, and gradually did it up\, calling it ‘an artist’s house’\, inviting Paul Gauguin to join him there. This encounter was to have a profound impact on both of the artists. They painted side by side\, their collaboration coming to a dramatic end a few months later. The difficulties Van Gogh faced led to his eventual decision to retreat to the asylum at Saint-Remy. \n“Based on extensive original research\, the book reveals discoveries that throw new light on the legendary artist and give a definitive account of his fifteen months in Provence\, including his time at the Yellow House\, his collaboration with Gauguin and its tragic and shocking ending.” \n–Frances Lincoln\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. Future book selections will be announced on this website and in the Weekly eNews email in advance. \nIf you have questions\, please contact our book club leader Rusty Lynn at rustylynn@earthlink.net. \nFace masks are recommended inside the gallery. \n.

SUMMARY:Creative Book Club - “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, November 18 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nJoin us on Saturday\, November 18 from 10am-12pm to discuss “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov. \nThe book is an in depth look at the life and loves of Helen Frankenthaler\, who took the New York art scene by storm when she began to pour turpentine thinned paint onto her large canvas laid out on the floor of her studio on October 26\,1952. The painting she made that day\, “Mountains and Sea\,” became the hallmark of her new\, radical style of painting. An approach that was to become known as Color Field Painting. (You can see that painting at the National Gallery here in Washington\, DC.) Helen had returned to NYC after graduating from Bennington in May 1950 with a desire to become a famous artist in the soon-to-be-center of the world’s art scene. The book’s primary focus is on what happened to Helen in the New York art scene in the 1950s. \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club – “Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Ross King
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Ross King\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, August 19 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nThe book for our August 19th discussion is “Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Ross King. The book is about the construction of the largest dome ever built by the 15th century. It had been a challenge for the architects and builders of the cathedral in Florence for several hundred years. So when Brunelleschi devised a plan for the building and won the job\, it became a central concern in the city. Ross King is an art historian who delves into the art\, as well as the political and social challenges of the period. I have read a number of his books\, and I am sure whoever gets into reading it will be rewarded in ways they never expected. \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. Future book selections will be announced on this website and in the Weekly eNews email in advance. \nIf you have questions\, please contact our book club leader Rusty Lynn at rustylynn@earthlink.net. \nFace masks are recommended inside the gallery. \n.

SUMMARY:Creative Book Club - “Why A Painting Is Like A Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art” by Nancy G. Heller
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Why A Painting Is Like A Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art” by Nancy G. Heller\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, April 22 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nThe book for our April 22nd discussion is Why A Painting Is Like A Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art by Nancy G. Heller. \n“How is a painting like a pizza? Both depend on visual balance for much of their overall appeal and\, though both can be judged by a set of established standards pizzas and paintings must ultimately be evaluated in terms of individual taste. By using such commonsense examples and making unexpected connections\, this book helps even the most skeptical viewers feel comfortable around contemporary art and see aspects of it they would otherwise miss.” —Princeton University Press (Publisher) \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club - “The Secret Lives of Color” by Kassia St. Clair
DESCRIPTION:Book: “The Secret Lives of Color” by Kassia St. Clair\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting rescheduled to Saturday\, February 11 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nThe book for the first book club meeting of 2023 is The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St. Clair (published in 2016). The book is organized around the color groups and full of very interesting research about all the colors imaginable. \nSince the book is all about colors\, and most of us have a favorite color or two\, please feel free to bring a piece of your artwork to share that uses one or more of your favorite colors to the discussion. \n“The Secret Lives of Color tells the unusual stories of seventy-five fascinating shades\, dyes\, and hues. From blonde to ginger\, the brown that changed the way battles were fought to the white that protected against the plague\, Picasso’s blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux\, acid yellow to kelly green\, and from scarlet women to imperial purple\, these surprising stories run like a bright thread throughout history.”—Penguin Books (Publisher) \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. \n.
