SUMMARY:Creative Book Club: "Ways of Seeing" by John Berger
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Ways of Seeing” by John Berger\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, October 11\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nJoin us on October 11 at 10am to discuss John Berger’s “Ways of Seeing”. It’s an adaptation of a 4-part series he did for the BBC. As described by Michael Messmer\, “Berger challenges the notion that Western art is solely the product of individual geniuses by exploring the social and economic contexts in which art is produced and consumed. The book comprises seven essays\, some of which combine text and images\, presenting a non-linear format that invites readers to engage critically with visual culture.” \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings at Del Ray Artisans gallery to discuss readings by a variety of authors. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club: “Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies” by Ross King
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies” by Ross King\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, August 2\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \n“Claude Monet’s water lily paintings are among the most iconic and beloved works of art of the past century. Yet these entrancing images were created at a time of terrible private turmoil and sadness for the artist. The dramatic history behind these paintings is little known; Ross King’s Mad Enchantment tells the full story for the first time and\, in the process\, presents a compelling and original portrait of one of our most popular and cherished artists.”\n—Bloomsbury Publishing\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club: “Falling Rocket: James Whistler\, John Ruskin\, and the Battle for Modern Art” by Paul Thomas Murphy
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Falling Rocket: James Whistler\, John Ruskin\, and the Battle for Modern Art” by Paul Thomas Murphy\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, April 12\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \n“The untold story of the artistic battle between James Abbot MacNeill Whistler and John Ruskin over Whistler’s controversial\, ground-breaking Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket. \n“In November 1878\, America’s greatest painter sued England’s greatest critic for a bad review. The painter won—but ruined himself in the process. The painter: James Abbot MacNeill Whistler\, whose combination of incredible talent\, unflagging energy\, and relentless self-promotion had by that time brought him to the very edge of artistic preeminence. The critic: John Ruskin\, Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University\, whose four-decades’ worth of prolific and highly respected literary output on aesthetics had made him England’s unchallenged and seemingly unchallengeable arbiter of art. \n“Though Whistler and Ruskin both lived in London and moved in the same artistic world\, they had\, until June\, 1877\, managed to remain entirely clear of one another. This was unusual because Whistler had a mercurial temperament\, a belligerent personality\, and seemed to thrive on opposition: he once challenged a man to a duel because the man accused the painter of sleeping with his wife. (Whistler had\, in fact\, slept with the man’s wife.)” \n—Excerpt from Pegasus Books\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club - “Paris in Ruins: Love\, War\, and the Birth of Impressionism” by Sebastian Smee
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Paris in Ruins: Love\, War\, and the Birth of Impressionism” by Sebastian Smee\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, February 1\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \n“The Pulitzer Prize–winning art critic’s gripping account of the “Terrible Year” in Paris and its monumental impact on the rise of Impressionism. \nFrom the summer of 1870 to the spring of 1871\, famously dubbed the “Terrible Year” by Victor Hugo\, Paris and its people were besieged\, starved\, and forced into surrender by Germans―then imperiled again as radical republicans established a breakaway Commune\, ultimately crushed by the French Army after bloody street battles and the burning of central Paris. As renowned art critic Sebastian Smee shows\, it was against the backdrop of these tumultuous times that the Impressionist movement was born―in response to violence\, civil war\, and political intrigue. \nIn stirring and exceptionally vivid prose\, Smee tells the story of those dramatic days through the eyes of great figures of Impressionism. Édouard Manet\, Berthe Morisot\, and Edgar Degas were trapped in Paris during the siege and deeply enmeshed in its politics. Others\, including Pierre-August Renoir and Frédéric Bazille\, joined regiments outside of the capital\, while Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro fled the country just in time. In the aftermath\, these artists developed a newfound sense of the fragility of life. That feeling for transience―reflected in Impressionism’s emphasis on fugitive light\, shifting seasons\, glimpsed street scenes\, and the impermanence of all things―became the movement’s great contribution to the history of art.” \n—W. W. Norton & Company\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. DESCRIPTION:Book: “Bright Stars: Great Artists Who Died Too Young” by Kate Bryan\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, November 16\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in; Set a reminder in Eventbrite) \n“In Bright Stars\, Kate Bryan examines the lives and legacies of 30 great artists who died too young\, celebrating their inspirational stories and extraordinary talent. \nSome of the world’s greatest and most-loved artists died under the age of forty. But how did they turn relatively short careers into such long legacies? What drove them to create\, against all the odds? And how can we use these stories to re-evaluate artists lost to the shadows\, or whose legacies are not yet secured?”\n \n—Frances Lincoln\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors.
