SUMMARY:Color School Kickoffs Summer with Live Music
DESCRIPTION:The band Color School performs outdoors in Del Ray Artisans gardens from 3-5pm on the closing day (Saturday\, May 28) of the Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School art exhibit to kickoff summer and the start of our Creative Summer Programs (June 1–August 31). \nMost of the members of the local band Color School are themselves DC-area natives. Their name was the suggestion of the band’s bass player\, photographer Charles Steck\, who had taken pictures of all the original Washington School artists. Steck had suggested the name ten years ago. The band liked the idea of being a DC-based band not using a name with a political bent. As drummer Bill Kalish notes\, “Art and music bump up against each other in all kinds of great ways and we thought that all the bright colors and bold graphics of the Color School fit our Pop band.” \nThese days\, however\, the Color School sound has moved in more of a funk direction. Color School recently dropped their new single\, Gateau. Living on Music’s Steve Houk will be in conversation with Bill Kalish and other members of the Color School band to chat about Gateau and promote their DRA gallery gig. Tune in @ youtu.be/g6q879aNEYw \nCome on over to Del Ray Artisans and check out the local live music bumping into some ARTastic channeling of the Washington Color School and Color Field movements. DC-area superstar artist\, student of the Color School\, and exhibit juror Barbara Januszkiewicz will be dropping by to meet and greet artists\, patrons\, and Color School band fans alike. \nCheck out our Creative Summer Programs (June 1–August 31) now to see the upcoming workshops and events. Register in advance for workshops at delrayartisans.org/creative-summer

SUMMARY:“Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash” Exhibit Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School Art Exhibit\nMay 6–28\, 2022\nDrips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School is the May exhibit at Del Ray Artisans\, now celebrating 30 years as a non-profit fine arts organization in Alexandria. Both representational and abstract expressions of color\, line\, movement\, and sense of space are explored. \nThe exhibit was inspired by and celebrates the work of Morris Louis\, Gene Davis\, Jacob Kainen\, among other founders and followers of the Washington Color School\, a group of abstract painters who formed the movement in the 1950s and 1960s in rebellion against the art establishment of the day. The exhibit is curated by Kelly MacConomy. \nThe special guest juror is Washington area painter Barbara Januszkiewicz\, who studied with two well-known members of the Washington Color School\, Paul Reed and Hilda Thorpe. Barbara’s organic abstractions are transcendental\, bold and oftentimes colossal\, composed with a masterful brushstroke. \n“Januszkiewicz’s pictures can resemble Morris Louis’s florals\, yet her style is hotter\, with a hint of the abstract expressionism the Color School abandoned.” ~ The Washington Post \nIn addition to seeing the art exhibit\, join us for these special events and workshops: \n\nMaking Art Splash\, First Thursday Del Ray\, May 5 from 6-9pm.\nCome create a “Washington Color Rule-the-School” canvas in Colasanto Park outside the gallery and recreate a Gene Davis Stripe Sidewalk Painting.\nArt Exhibit Opening Day\, Friday\, May 6 from 12-9pm.\nJoin us on opening day for the widest selection of artwork. SUMMARY:“After Edward Hopper” Exhibit Opening Day Appointments
DESCRIPTION:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation Art ExhibitFebruary 5 – 27\, 2021\n“COVID Nighthawks reimagined” by Kelly MacConomy\nThe great American painter Edward Hopper is famous for his canvases depicting the isolationist urban landscape as well as the sweeping solitude and unpopulated vacancy of the dunes of Cape Cod. His 1942 painting “Nighthawks” is Hopper’s most recognizable work. It is the visual narrative of a late-night New York City Greenwich Village diner scene\, bereft of a bustling business\, depicting three solo customers and a solemn soda jerk. \nIn the time of COVID-19\, quarantines\, shutdowns\, lockdowns\, orders of stay-at-home and safer-at-home have created a climate of extreme alienation and social deprivation. After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation is the member-only show at Del Ray Artisans opening Friday\, February 5 and on exhibit until Saturday\, February 27\, 2021. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, February 5 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \n“Homage Bar” by Gordon Thomas Frank\nArtists present their interpretations of what makes Hopper’s imagery quintessentially American: perseverance\, fortitude\, diversity\, and an egalitarian spirit in spite of adversity\, impoverishment\, and social injustice. As February advances into the new year and a new hope\, this show expresses the anthem of a new dawn: still we rise as one\, stronger together. \nThe After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation exhibit is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Regular gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-6pm\, and Saturdays 12-4pm. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. Del Ray Artisans is ALX Promise certified and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. Please wear a face mask and maintain 6′ of personal space. \nFor more information\, contact the curator Kelly MacConomy (kmacconomy@gmail.com) or Director of Curating Kelly Postula (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org).

SUMMARY:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation (2/5-2/27)
DESCRIPTION:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation Art Exhibit\nFebruary 5 – 27\, 2021\n“COVID Nighthawks reimagined” by Kelly MacConomy\nView Online \nThe great American painter Edward Hopper is famous for his canvases depicting the isolationist urban landscape as well as the sweeping solitude and unpopulated vacancy of the dunes of Cape Cod.
