DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to the ARTFUL Card Making evening on Saturday\, April 4 from 6-9pm. This free event will honor the memory of two longtime DRA members and “Cardies” Donna Lee Gallo and Rusty Lynn who both passed away in February. \nCome and enjoy the camaraderie and share stories about Donna and Rusty. Hostess Karen Schmitz encourages all levels of “cardie” enthusiasts to drop-in (no registration required). Plenty of art making materials will be on hand through generous donations from Donna’s husband Bill and artists Theresa Kulstad and Becky Rife. DESCRIPTION:Groovy Movies: Artwork Inspired by Motion PicturesArt Exhibit runs November 5 – 28\, 2021\n“Technicolor 1977” by John W Hiller\nPhoto Album \nLights! Camera! Art Action! The Film-Fun Groovy Movies: Artwork Inspired by Motion Pictures exhibit features artwork influenced by the movies—from American Film Institute (AFI) classics to cult films like “Abbott & Costello Meets Frankenstein”\, “Barbarella” to “Yellow Submarine” and “Zorba the Greek”. This is a curated exhibit showcasing artwork by local artists interpreting the movies and presented in partnership with the Alexandria Film Festival. \nReserve tickets for a half-hour viewing on opening day: Friday\, November 5 between 12-9pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 15 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \nCurator Karen Schmitz presents Rosebud Awards\, the Alexandria Film Festival presents All Fest Passes (November 11-14) Awards\, and the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra presents tickets to their “Homegrown: American Stories in Music and Film” concert to select artists for outstanding and groovy artworks. The word “groovy” can mean excellent\, exciting\, fashionable\, wonderful\, cool\, funky\, hip and happening. Artworks are influenced by movie titles\, actors\, characters\, catch phrases\, costumes\, locations and genres in any medium—ceramics\, jewelry\, mixed media\, paintings\, photography\, sculpture and more. John was born in Altadena\, California in 1935 and passed away in 2020 at the age of 84. \nJohn was modest and quiet about his career\, but this local cinematographer and photographer was the recipient of an Oscar for the 1984 documentary short “The Stone Carvers” about the Gothic architectural adornments on the Washington National Cathedral. He also received 20 Emmys for various other projects. For 31 years he worked in the Smithsonian’s Motion Picture Unit as a producer\, director\, photography director\, cinematographer\, videographer\, editor\, and still photographer. John also previously worked in Hollywood\, for the American Red Cross\, USIA\, and the U.S. Navy.
