The challenge begins at 11am on the playing fields of the Mount Vernon Rec Center next to the gallery. When challenged by another costumed participant\, you may yield or duel! Inflatable ‘swords’ are also allowed. NO other foam\, wood\, rubber or metal allowed. This is a KID-FRIENDLY event for ages 6+. \nThis event is held in conjunction with the Curses! Foiled Again! We will use cardboard and paper to map out the overall structure\, then build our papier-mâché sculpture to its final result. Alebrijes were created by Pedro Linares Lopez\, a Mexican cartoneria artisan who created Papier-mâché figurines that he coined alebrijes after imagining them in a fever dream. Alebrijes are creatures that consist of features that represent multiple creatures and the four elements of nature. Dragons are great alebrije because they have all four elements of nature: air represented in their wings\, fire represented in their flames\, land represented in their legs\, and water represented in their ability to swim. \nIn this workshop we will explore the cultural importance of Linares’ alebrijes and how they have become a tradition in Mexico. We will build our imaginary creatures with armature sculpting wire\, clay\, papier mache\, aluminum foil\, resin eyeballs\, acrylic paint\, glitter\, feathers\, and many more mixed media materials. We will work swiftly to get as much done as possible and will be utilizing hair dryers to help us dry our papier mache & artworks quickly. I look forward to you bringing your imagination to life! \nAll materials will be supplied to use during the workshop to create your creature. Only a few studies across a broad range of journals have attempted to research how hormonal increase during the menstrual period affects ADHD severity\, and even fewer have focused on potentially how the hormonal change through menstrual cycles impacts medication efficacy or vitamin deficits. \nJoin Faith Hendon for a discussion and meta-analysis of current research within and external to the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) focusing on ADHD and women\, with a secondary focus on cyclic (menstrual/hormonal) patterns of observable symptoms and behaviors. \nThis free talk is held in conjunction with The Unseen art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery (February 3-25\, 2023). \nThe talk will be online through the Zoom platform. You may attend on a computer\, tablet\, or smartphone. \nRegister Now \nAbout the Presenter: Faith Hendon has an extensive background in technology and an established career in behavior analysis. She has been a practicing BCBA/LBA since November of 2019\, and has worked in the field of ABA since 2017. She is currently pursuing her PhD in ABA from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology\, with two published studies in behavioral journals. Faith provides current in-home services to families with autistic children and other developmental concerns requiring behavioral mitigation and education. Faith follows a modernized compassionate care approach in ABA treatment with full attention to the personhood and dignity of clients\, focusing on relabeling deficits as potential superpowers\, and helping families learn how to hone unique skills and abilities while increasing understanding of communication methods. Matt will discuss the joys\, hazards\, and equipment associated with diving under ice or deeper than 130 feet. Divers must bring their own light and warmth\, maintain the oxygen needed to support life while avoiding toxicity\, and manage the risks as nitrogen goes from inert to both narcotic and hazardous. DESCRIPTION:This 2-day workshop has been canceled. Consider taking the 2-hour Quilt Patch Mosaic Workshop (no glass cutting) on Tuesday\, August 16\, 2022 from 6:30–8:30pm for a taste of this artform.  \nInstructor: Shona D’Cruz (pronounced “shawna”)\nDates: Friday\, July 1 from 10am–5pm AND Saturday\, July 2 from 10am–12:30pm\nClass size: 6-10 participants\n(Register by midnight on June 24 – one week in advance) \nCreate an 8″ x 8″ mosaic art work for indoor display\, using a variety of materials such as stained glass\, vitreous tiles and other beautiful glass. Have fun while you learn to cut glass and build your piece\, tessera by tessera. We will touch upon design\, adhesives\, appropriate substrates for indoor use\, etc. Learn how to grout and finish your piece. \nStudents are encouraged to create their own simple design\, but some basic design options will be provided by the instructor. Completed pieces are grouted on the final day. \nThis is a 2-day workshop on Friday\, July 1 from 10am–5pm AND Saturday\, July 2 from 10am–12:30pm. Skill level: Beginner to intermediate. Minimum age 16. \nPlease note the following: \n\nPlease wear closed-toed shoes.\nBring an apron if desired.\nThere is a $65 supply fee for this workshop separate from the instruction cost. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Cristin Guinan-Wiley\nDate/Time: Monday and Wednesday\, May 16 and May 18\, 2022 from 7-10pm\nCost: $40 for DRA members and $50 for non-members; plus $20 supply fee\nClass size: 4-14 participants\n(Register by midnight on May 8) \nDo you love books and want to learn how to make your own? In this workshop you will learn how to create a long stitch journal. The long stitch is only one of the many styles of exposed spine sewing and is one of the easiest for beginners. \nThe course will take place over two days. Day one will be a general introduction and the creation and construction of the exterior of the book. Day two will be preparing the spine and paper and sewing the signatures. The two-day time period is to make sure that 1) everyone has the time they need and 2) the glue has enough time to dry before we start sewing. \nA selection of decorative paper for the interior and exterior of the covers will be provided and is included in the supply fee; however\, you are welcome to also bring your own. Bookmaking tools will be provided for use during the workshop.
