The installation is approximately 40 feet wide by 7 feet tall and was created using natural and synthetic yarn, fabric trim, mylar, plastic, and vinyl. The installation is on display outside Del Ray Artisans gallery from June 7 through October 28, 2024. The original end date was September 1, but it was extended due to positive community feedback and a material connection to the Fascinating Fiber, Alluring Fabric art exhibit inside Del Ray Artisans gallery from September 6–28, 2024.
River Towers Condominium Association donated knitted and crocheted pieces from a yarn bomb installation at the condominium complex (March-April 2024) to Del Ray Artisans. The individual pieces were created by Iva Beatty, Melinda Croft, Nancy Mendez, Anne St. Jacques, and Leah Sturgis. Most of the yarn came from UpCycle Creative Reuse Center.
The pieces were reformed into “candles” and installed outside Del Ray Artisans gallery by Dawn Wyse Hurto, Sophia Jones, Adelyn Doyle, and Kurt Peterson. The new concept was completed with the addition of a banner wishing a happy 275th anniversary to the City of Alexandria. The source materials for the banner include a photograph by Engin Akyurt (via Unsplash), and fonts KG A Little Swag by Kimberly Geswein and Mix Stitch by Mix Fonts (via dafont.com).
Del Ray Artisans, founded in 1992, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote art for the benefit of artists and the community.
