His life and work were filled with innovative and controversial ideas and approaches to creating art. This book published in 2014 reads like a dictionary\, organized by the letters of the alphabet. Each chapter is filled with this master artist’s genius. \nWhen we meet on June 18th we will have an opportunity to each share what amused\, baffled\, or informed us as we read. DESCRIPTION:Our gardens have a great start for this year thanks to all the March and April volunteers who helped clear away the winter blahs.  A huge thank you goes to Pamela Underhill for her vision\, green thumb\, and many years of work transforming the gardens to what they look like today. To be a part of this effort\, join the committee on the third Saturday morning of every month: \n\nMay 21\, 9-11:30am\nJune 18\, 8-10:30am (starting at 8am!)\nJuly 16\, 8-10:30am (starting at 8am!)\nAugust 20\, 8-10:30am (starting at 8am!)\nSeptember 17\, 9-11:30am\nOctober 15\, 9-11:30am\n\nBring gloves\, knee pads (if desired)\, and laughter. Even if you don’t know what a weed is\, we can teach you. Volunteer for 1 hour or the whole 2.5 hours. If you have any questions\, please email Kurt and Jenny at Gardens@DelRayArtisans.org. \nMEMBERS: This task counts towards your annual membership volunteer hours. \nNON-MEMBERS: You are welcome to come help and learn too. \nThank you for your volunteer time! \nNOTE: All plantings and transplantings must be approved by the Garden Committee. SUMMARY:Life Drawing - Gesture & Long Pose
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in and practice life drawing on Tuesday\, June 14 from 7-10pm. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our nude model. Traditional drawing media (such as pencils\, pens\, and charcoal) are welcome; and pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. Please do not bring acrylics or oil paints. We don’t supply easels – only plenty of chairs – but you are welcome to bring your own easel if you want to use one. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe first two hours of this session will be focused on gesture poses (dynamic 1-5 minute poses) to loosen up and participate in a fun\, fast-paced drawing experience. The final hour will be one long pose to practice shading and hatching techniques. \nFees for this session are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been rescheduled to Sunday\, August 21 from 6-9pm. \nInstructor: Tracy WilkersonDate/Time: Sunday\, June 12\, 2022 from 6-9pmCost: $40 for Del Ray Artisans Members and $50 for non-members\, plus a $10 supply feeClass size: 6-12 participants(Register by June 9) \nLearn the ins and outs of prepping for and mixing resin\, and how to use it as an adhesive\, a covering\, or the main medium. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop… No need to rush\, which is one of the first lessons in using resin! \nThis workshop does not get into using dyes with resin or building big molds to create one-of-a-kind resined tables (as seen on YouTube)\, but this workshop will provide you with a good understanding of how resin works so you can be bold enough to take the next steps in your creative interests. \nAlthough the class is listed for 3 hours\, you can leave once you have finished your creations. Some students finish very quickly while others take the whole 3 hours to create – there is plenty of time for each person to enjoy the creative process while not feeling rushed. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop\, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. \nThe workshop is designed for adults. Children ages 16-17 may participate with parental permission. During this 2-hour class\, the instructor will walk you through the steps of creating a design\, along with considerations for color and placement of your chosen tesserae. If you wish\, you may bring small pieces of broken jewelry to add to your piece. Please note the following: \n\nPlease do not bring any glass or ceramic cutting tools to this workshop.\nPlease wear closed-toed shoes.\nThis is not messy work (no glass cutting)\, but the adhesive does not come off clothing. With 16 years of experience\, your instructor (self-taught wire jewelry designer and business owner) reviews the components and skills for assembling basic wire jewelry pieces. You will learn all ‘cold’ techniques\, which refers to manipulation of materials with NO HEAT added (no soldering\, melting\, etc). Whether you have zero experience or have dabbled\, we will be starting from the very beginning! You will: \n\nLearn the basic concepts of ‘cold’ wire jewelry\nPractice coordination skills for wire-jewelry-making\nLearn about the basic components used to assemble your class projects (a pendant necklace & a pair earrings)\n\nWHAT YOU MAKE\nYou will receive the materials to create 2 projects (a delicate pendant necklace and 1 pair of earrings) from start to finish PLUS have the opportunity (and materials) to repair some of your own items during the class time. SUMMARY:Color School Kickoffs Summer with Live Music
DESCRIPTION:The band Color School performs outdoors in Del Ray Artisans gardens from 3-5pm on the closing day (Saturday\, May 28) of the Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School art exhibit to kickoff summer and the start of our Creative Summer Programs (June 1–August 31). \nMost of the members of the local band Color School are themselves DC-area natives. Their name was the suggestion of the band’s bass player\, photographer Charles Steck\, who had taken pictures of all the original Washington School artists. Steck had suggested the name ten years ago. The band liked the idea of being a DC-based band not using a name with a political bent. As drummer Bill Kalish notes\, “Art and music bump up against each other in all kinds of great ways and we thought that all the bright colors and bold graphics of the Color School fit our Pop band.” \nThese days\, however\, the Color School sound has moved in more of a funk direction. Color School recently dropped their new single\, Gateau. Living on Music’s Steve Houk will be in conversation with Bill Kalish and other members of the Color School band to chat about Gateau and promote their DRA gallery gig. To be a part of this effort\, join the committee on the third Saturday morning of every month: \n\nMay 21\, 9-11:30am\nJune 18\, 8-10:30am (starting at 8am!)\nJuly 16\, 8-10:30am (starting at 8am!)\nAugust 20\, 8-10:30am (starting at 8am!)\nSeptember 17\, 9-11:30am\nOctober 15\, 9-11:30am\n\nBring gloves\, knee pads (if desired)\, and laughter. Even if you don’t know what a weed is\, we can teach you. Volunteer for 1 hour or the whole 2.5 hours. Creative Revival is a 10-week course based on The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.  The program is focused on identifying and removing creative blocks\, fostering confidence and creating a community with other creatives with similar goals and interests. Every week we will meet to discuss each chapter of the book\, encourage daily “morning pages” practice\, share Artist’s Dates\, and engage in other exercises that will foster creativity. \nEveryone will also have an opportunity to receive a complimentary one hour individual creativity coaching session with the facilitator\, a certified creativity coach\, to focus on specific areas regarding their creativity practice. A private web portal will also be available for participants to share thoughts and network with other participants. \nThe course will be held online via Zoom on Mondays from 6-7:30pm\, starting March 21 through May 23\, 2022. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Cristin Guinan-Wiley\nDate/Time: Monday and Wednesday\, May 16 and May 18\, 2022 from 7-10pm\nCost: $40 for DRA members and $50 for non-members; plus $20 supply fee\nClass size: 4-14 participants\n(Register by midnight on May 8) \nDo you love books and want to learn how to make your own? In this workshop you will learn how to create a long stitch journal. The long stitch is only one of the many styles of exposed spine sewing and is one of the easiest for beginners. \nThe course will take place over two days. Day one will be a general introduction and the creation and construction of the exterior of the book. Day two will be preparing the spine and paper and sewing the signatures. The two-day time period is to make sure that 1) everyone has the time they need and 2) the glue has enough time to dry before we start sewing. \nA selection of decorative paper for the interior and exterior of the covers will be provided and is included in the supply fee; however\, you are welcome to also bring your own. Bookmaking tools will be provided for use during the workshop. The spontaneity and sparkle of watercolor comes at a cost; it can be unpredictable and messy\, but it doesn’t have to be. In this three-hour class we’ll learn some basic skills and explore ways to tame watercolor and have some fun. This class is designed for beginners\, but students of all levels are welcome\, especially those who want a fresh start with watercolor.
