Toepfer\nDel Ray Artisans presents an exciting new exhibit\, Kondo vs. Chaos\, featuring the work of local artists from February 7 to March 1\, 2020. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday\, February 7 from 7-9pm. Kondo vs. Chaos examines the divide between those inspired by Marie Kondo’s theory of keeping only those things that bring you joy and those who deal with chaos in their lives. \nMarie Kondo’s technique has brought simplicity and order to millions of devotees. Her principles have struck a chord with those overwhelmed by “stuff.” Some artists thrive on\, or at least live with\, chaos. They eschew the orderly static world and value dynamism. Some painters\, like the Dutch still life artists\, depicted “organized chaos.” They painted carefully chaotic scenes of overcrowded tables that overflowed with platters of flowers\, fowls and fruits. Picasso used chaos in his electrifying Guernica painting to show the horrors\, terrors and the randomness of war. \nSimplicity and chaos co-exist in the minds of many and in the world at large. This exhibit enables artists to externalize these concepts. \nThe Kondo vs. Chaos exhibit is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Showcasing the animals that lift and fill our hearts is a popular theme at VCA Alexandria and coincides with the winter holiday season when creature comforts of all types are especially appreciated. \nCreature Comforts runs September 30\, 2019 through January 26\, 2020 at VCA Alexandria\, 2660 Duke Street\, Alexandria\, VA 22314. Patrons may view the artwork at VCA Alexandria during regular business hours and at the discretion of hospital staff. Regular hours are Monday through Friday 8am-8pm\, Saturday 8am-3pm\, and closed Sunday. \nAll the artwork on display is by Del Ray Artisans members. Artists are donating 20% of the purchase price of sold pieces to Del Ray Artisans\, who is splitting the donation with VCA Alexandria’s charity of choice\, the Wildlife Rescue League. The Wildlife Rescue League cares for sick\, injured and orphaned wildlife with the intent of releasing them back into their native habitat. This “batik” method of fusing glass was developed originally by artist Lena Beckeus. These bowls are “freaky” because they are so easy and fun to make! Students will work with contrasting colors of glass powder\, carving tools\, and stencils. All supplies are provided. \nThe instructor will take the pieces home to be fired in the kiln – two firings are required to make a finished bowl. It has also been the love interest in popular songs\, and is said to stimulate the joyful energy of the inner child. This juried exhibit features art from local area artists and is guaranteed to bring warmth and brightness to the wintry days of January. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday\, January 10 from 7-9pm. \nThe juror is Jane Hartman\, a most imaginative artist who uses her science background to create both fanciful and realistic “creatures” in glass including insects\, fish\, trilobites and protozoa\, to name a few. Tangerine is a saturated\, bold orange hue that describes the exterior of the delicious fruit! Like most other orange hues\, tangerine is associated with energy\, youth\, and happiness. It has also been the love interest in popular songs\, and is said to stimulate the joyful energy of the inner child. This juried exhibit features art from local area artists and is guaranteed to bring warmth and brightness to the wintry days of January. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday\, January 10 from 7-9pm. \nThe juror is Jane Hartman\, a most imaginative artist who uses her science background to create both fanciful and realistic “creatures” in glass including insects\, fish\, trilobites and protozoa\, to name a few. Over the past decade\, Jane has made a name for herself in the world of science art: being featured on many blogs\, websites\, and professional science conferences. She has collaborated with scientists from around the world and her work may be seen online and in many juried art shows. \nThe January 2020 edition of WETA Arts features Tangerine!
