SUMMARY:“After Edward Hopper” Exhibit Opening Day Appointments
DESCRIPTION:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation Art ExhibitFebruary 5 – 27\, 2021\n“COVID Nighthawks reimagined” by Kelly MacConomy\nThe great American painter Edward Hopper is famous for his canvases depicting the isolationist urban landscape as well as the sweeping solitude and unpopulated vacancy of the dunes of Cape Cod. His 1942 painting “Nighthawks” is Hopper’s most recognizable work. It is the visual narrative of a late-night New York City Greenwich Village diner scene\, bereft of a bustling business\, depicting three solo customers and a solemn soda jerk. \nIn the time of COVID-19\, quarantines\, shutdowns\, lockdowns\, orders of stay-at-home and safer-at-home have created a climate of extreme alienation and social deprivation. After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation is the member-only show at Del Ray Artisans opening Friday\, February 5 and on exhibit until Saturday\, February 27\, 2021. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, February 5 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \n“Homage Bar” by Gordon Thomas Frank\nArtists present their interpretations of what makes Hopper’s imagery quintessentially American: perseverance\, fortitude\, diversity\, and an egalitarian spirit in spite of adversity\, impoverishment\, and social injustice. As February advances into the new year and a new hope\, this show expresses the anthem of a new dawn: still we rise as one\, stronger together. \nThe After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation exhibit is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Regular gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-6pm\, and Saturdays 12-4pm. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. Del Ray Artisans is ALX Promise certified and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. Please wear a face mask and maintain 6′ of personal space. \nFor more information\, contact the curator Kelly MacConomy (kmacconomy@gmail.com) or Director of Curating Kelly Postula (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org).

SUMMARY:“Unfinished/Finished” Random Pair Sign Up Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Sign up to be randomly paired with another artist(s) to complete works for the Unfinished/Finished art exhibit.\nSign Up Deadline: Wednesday\, February 3\, 2021 by midnight\n“Beauty and the Background” by Michael Green (left\, starting artist) and Eileen M. O’Brien (right\, finishing artist)\nSign Up for Random Pairing \nAs artists\, most of us have unfinished pieces hidden in our workspaces. This exhibit challenges us to share those pieces with other artists and see how the “start” inspires a “finish” by someone else. We hope the show will provide a fun and safe way to collaborate\, given the isolation we have all experienced due to the pandemic. Artists may self-pair with someone they know -OR- sign up (by February 3) to be randomly paired. \nUnfinished/Finished is open to all area artists and area high school students. High school students are invited to participate for free (no entry fee). The deadline to enter finished artwork is Sunday\, March 14\, 2021 by midnight. The exhibit runs April 2 – May 1\, 2021. \nSign Up for Random Pairing

SUMMARY:“After Edward Hopper” Call for Entry Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Call for Entry ~ Open to Del Ray Artisans MembersAfter Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation\nExhibit Dates: February 5–27\, 2021\nDigital entry deadline extended to Sunday\, January 17\, 2021 by midnight\n“COVID Nighthawks reimagined” by Kelly MacConomy\nEntry Details & Form \nLife in the time of COVID-19 this past year has created an inorganic state of a nearly lost humanity. The pervasive experiences of solitude\, isolation\, loneliness\, longing\, and reverie are a common thread in the paintings of Edward Hopper. Hopper’s iconic emblem of Post-Depression-era America and a world at war\, “Nighthawks\,” recalls not only the dire times of economic uncertainty but a world lost. Artists are invited to enter their own existential explorations and expressions in response to COVID-19. Make it personal—or make it Hopperesque! \nAfter Edward Hopper: Themes of Isolation and Solitude is a Del Ray Artisans members-only exhibit. Membership has its privileges! However\, if you are not a member\, you may join Del Ray Artisans now. \nThis exhibit will have an Art-to-Go Marketplace. Entries for the marketplace are also due January 17 and DO NOT have to fit the theme. \nEntry Details & Form
