The flow of energy in our chakras is a function of how we relate to ourselves. The gong is an effective tool in balancing the chakras. The sound waves of the gong aids in facilitating the flow of energy in our bodies. \nThis experiential workshop begins with an easy but effective breath exercise\, followed by a guided meditation to energize the chakra system. The workshop culminates in a gong sound experience to release energetic blocks\, stimulate circulation and the glandular system. \nNo experience necessary. Please bring a yoga mat or blanket\, as well as a cushion for seated meditation if needed. A limited number of chairs will be available. Gong is not recommended for women in the last trimester of pregnancy. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Nancy RamseyDate: Saturday\, June 15 from 10am-12pm\nClass size: 2-12 participants\n(Register by June 14; Walk-ins welcome\, space & supplies permitting.) \nChakra Energies by Nancy Ramsey\nParticipants will use a variety of tools for layering and taking away paint to create works in acrylic that represent the energies of the chakras. The process of adding and taking away the different colors will create unique works reflecting each student’s journey with the chakras. \nParticipants will practice layering wet acrylic paints on paper. Then\, will explore a variety of tools for etching into the paint. After exploring the possibilities\, they will choose some favorite techniques to use on their canvases. We will discuss the chakras\, pausing to add a new layer of color after each one. As they add each layer\, participants can consider their own strengths and needs and consider setting intentions as they add and subtract color. DESCRIPTION:Meets second Sundays from November-June \nUrban Sketchbooking emphasizes storytelling that conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings completed from direct observations. This Del Ray meeting operates on a drop-in basis during afternoons of the second Sunday of each month\, so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the cafe to produce still life\, figure\, or architecture subjects in your sketchbook. Participants will spend some time putting their skills into practice and then reconvene for a review of finished works. The fee for each 2-hour session is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. \nThe June 9th meetup will be at Nectar Del Ray (106 Hume Avenue\, Alexandria\, VA 22301).

SUMMARY:Life Drawing - Gesture
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a chance to hone your figure drawing skills? Del Ray Artisans offers a range of open life drawing sessions for just this purpose. Both nude and clothed models are featured. (Models will be nude unless otherwise noted.) These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint from our live models. We don’t supply easels but you are welcome to bring your own if you want to use one. Please no acrylics or oils; pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe fee for each three-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. Two-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. \nGesture Sessions\nCome to the gesture sessions to loosen up and participate in a fun\, fast-paced drawing experience. These two-hour sessions are composed primarily of dynamic 1 to 5-minute poses. Walk-ins allowed\, space permitting.) \nUsing crystal and Tibetan bowls\, Dante will lead a soothing asana and breathwork class to prepare the body for sound meditation. In the last hour\, Dante will conclude with a soothing and unique exploration of the chakra energy points through sound vibration. \nIn this workshop\, sound healing is the use of tuned\, deep-vibrational instruments such as crystal and Tibetan bowls during healing and meditation\, which can balance dissonant frequencies in the body and bring them into harmony. The seven chakras are associated with vibrations\, moods\, and colors\, and are frequently used in yoga and meditation practices. \nThe exhibit is juried by contemporary artist Jeff Erickson\, an abstract artist\, based in Alexandria\, Virginia. He uses oils and cold wax medium to create contemporary paintings anchored in nature. He exhibits in galleries primarily on the East Coast\, and his work can be seen locally at Principle Gallery in Alexandria. \nMeet the curators\, Joyce A. Frank and Kitty Russell\, and the artists at the opening reception on Friday\, June 7 from 7-9pm. You must have registered by June 2 to attend. \nInstructor: Lori Lankford\nDates: Friday\, June 7 from 9 AM to 1 PM\nClass size: 3-12 participants\n(Register by June 2) \nAlthough you may have walked a location numerous times\, you’ll suddenly notice new details about your surroundings when you’re on a photowalk with a camera in your hand. In this class we will take a photowalk looking for patterns\, textures\, reflections\, shadows\, architectural details\, plants\, insects and more. \nStudents must bring their own camera.  \nStudents are responsible for providing their own transportation. The workshop begins at River Farm Gardens (7931 E Boulevard Dr\, Alexandria VA 22308) at 9am. We will depart River Farm Gardens at 11am and meet back at Del Ray Artisans (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria VA 22301) for the 2nd half of the program. \nPlease bring a lunch or snack. We will break from 11:30am-12pm to eat lunch. DESCRIPTION:Re-Connecting Threads Art Exhibit at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital\nJanuary 28 – June 2\, 2019\n“Dream Weaver Frida” by Dawn Wyse Hurto and Liz Martinez\nThe Re-Connecting Threads art exhibit at the Veterinary Clinics of America Alexandria Animal Hospital (VCA Alexandria) features Del Ray Artisans members’ artwork. The exhibit is a part of Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls (GWW) program in partnership with VCA Alexandria. \nThe exhibit focuses on fiber art and fiber’s influence through other mediums as well—celebrating fiber and how it connects us to the stories of our lives. Come view the artwork at VCA Alexandria from January 28\, 2019 through June 2\, 2019. Patrons may view the artwork at VCA Alexandria during regular business hours and at the discretion of hospital staff. Regular hours are Monday through Friday 8am-8pm\, Saturday 8am-3pm\, and closed Sunday. \nAll artwork is available for purchase through Del Ray Artisans. Artists are donating 20% of the purchase price of sold pieces to Del Ray Artisans\, who is splitting the donation with the VCA Alexandria’s charity of choice\, Wildlife Rescue League. Wildlife Rescue League provides care for sick\, injured and orphaned wildlife with the intent of releasing them back into their native habitat. You must have registered by May 29 to attend. \nInstructor: Tina McCoy\nSaturdays: June 1\, June 8\, and June 15 from 2-5pm (3-weekend class)\nClass size: 4-15 participants\n(Register by May 29) \nLearn how to create a beautiful flower painting using commercial and hand-painted papers.You’ll learn basic techniques to make hand-painted papers and to assemble a collage and more\, so that you can continue exploring on your own. You’ll be working from your imagination to get you to that place of free exploration and expression. You’ll be encouraged to play and discover. All skill levels welcome. Must be at least 18 years old. Expect to learn about drawing\, painting\, collage\, color-mixing and composition. \nStudents bring own supplies: \n\nCanson Mixed Media – XL series – 7?x10?\, 98 lb.\nCanson Universal Sketch – Artist series 5.5? x 8.5?\nBlack ink pen (one): Sharpie Ultra Fine Permanent Marker or Faber Castell Pitt Pen Fine\nWatercolor pan set (any brand)\nWatercolor Brushes: Round #8 and #10; and\n1? Matthew will take you on a journey through time\, space\, and scale – as you shrink down and experience alien worlds that are right beneath your nose! \nYou’ll learn about his roots as a photographic artist\, hear some unreleased stories\, and learn how he looks for (and documents) these incredible places. From the jungles of Sri Lanka to the wilds of Iceland\, this event is for people of any age and is sure to leave you filled with wonder and a renewed sense of childhood curiosity. \nPhotograph by Matthew Cicanese\nMatthew’s work also examines the intersection of art\, science\, and the visceral connections that humans have with the natural world. His work illuminates life forms around the world that exist in our periphery – yet hold a critical significance. \nNo need to register in advance.
