All artist supplies are provided. There will also be a one-day only gallery show held on the Saturday after camp to show off the students’ work from their week. \nArt Camp will be at the Del Ray Artisans gallery at the Nicholas A. Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, VA 22301. The gallery is handicap accessible. For more information\, contact our Youth Programs Director Suzan T. SUMMARY:Sketchcrawling in the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. The flow of energy in our chakras is a function of how we relate to ourselves. The gong is an effective tool in balancing the chakras. The sound waves of the gong aids in facilitating the flow of energy in our bodies. \nThis experiential workshop begins with an easy but effective breath exercise\, followed by a guided meditation to energize the chakra system. The workshop culminates in a gong sound experience to release energetic blocks\, stimulate circulation and the glandular system. \nNo experience necessary. Please bring a yoga mat or blanket\, as well as a cushion for seated meditation if needed. A limited number of chairs will be available. Gong is not recommended for women in the last trimester of pregnancy. SUMMARY:Painting the Chakra Energies Workshop

The process of adding and taking away the different colors will create unique works reflecting each student’s journey with the chakras. \nParticipants will practice layering wet acrylic paints on paper. Then\, will explore a variety of tools for etching into the paint. After exploring the possibilities\, they will choose some favorite techniques to use on their canvases. We will discuss the chakras\, pausing to add a new layer of color after each one. As they add each layer\, participants can consider their own strengths and needs and consider setting intentions as they add and subtract color. In the last hour\, Dante will conclude with a soothing and unique exploration of the chakra energy points through sound vibration. \nIn this workshop\, sound healing is the use of tuned\, deep-vibrational instruments such as crystal and Tibetan bowls during healing and meditation\, which can balance dissonant frequencies in the body and bring them into harmony. Matthew will take you on a journey through time\, space\, and scale – as you shrink down and experience alien worlds that are right beneath your nose! \nYou’ll learn about his roots as a photographic artist\, hear some unreleased stories\, and learn how he looks for (and documents) these incredible places. From the jungles of Sri Lanka to the wilds of Iceland\, this event is for people of any age and is sure to leave you filled with wonder and a renewed sense of childhood curiosity. \nPhotograph by Matthew Cicanese\nMatthew’s work also examines the intersection of art\, science\, and the visceral connections that humans have with the natural world.
