DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been rescheduled to September 5th. This workshop is free\, but please register in advance to help the instructors plan. \nInstructors: Dixie Pond and Niranjan Dinesh\nDate: Thursday\, August 15 from 7-8:30pm\nClass size: 4-12 participants \nBrazilian zouk is a partner dance from Brazil characterized by flowy\, circular movements. The beginner classes will cover the foundations of the dance\, including basic steps\, timing\, and connection. Brazilian zouk derived from Brazilian lambada. Following the lambada craze\, people began dancing lambada steps to slower paced music from the French Caribbean called zouk. Thus\, Brazilian zouk was born! The dance continues to evolve today and can be danced to a variety of music.  \nStudents can expect to learn the basic steps of Brazilian zouk as well as timing. Class can be a standalone\, or a series of beginner classes if there is interest in a 4-week series. \nComfortable clothing and comfortable shoes (i.e.\, able to pivot in them!) recommended for attendees. \n. \n\nThis workshop is a part of Del Ray Artisans’ Creative Summer Programs. SUMMARY:Workshop: Acrylics\, Mixing Color for Realism
DESCRIPTION:Old Trap Floats by Jeff Lodge\nInstructor: Jeff Lodge\nDate: Saturday\, August 10 from 11am-2pm\nClass size: 5-12 participants\n(Register by August 7) \nMixing the right color can be challenging. In this workshop\, Jeff will show how to reproduce the colors in a scene using tints\, tones\, shades\, and hues. Common problems and mistakes will be covered\, and students will learn how to get the correct overall tonal balance in a painting\, recreate atmospheric effects\, and use glazing to reduce contrast and blend color areas. \nAlthough acrylics will be used in the workshop\, the theories taught are applicable to all opaque paint mediums (such as acrylic\, oil\, and gouache). Students will create a small painting during the class. This workshop is for all skill levels. \nStudents should bring: Brushes\, palette\, palette knives\, apron (if desired).\nPaint\, small canvases\, water and mixing cups\, and cleanup supplies are supplied. \n\nAbout the Instructor: Jeff Lodge is an award winning Del Ray Artisans and The Art League member. SUMMARY:Sketchcrawling in the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. All artist supplies are provided. There will also be a one-day only gallery show held on the Saturday after camp to show off the students’ work from their week. \nArt Camp will be at the Del Ray Artisans gallery at the Nicholas A. Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, VA 22301. The gallery is handicap accessible. For more information\, contact our Youth Programs Director Suzan T. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. The flow of energy in our chakras is a function of how we relate to ourselves. The gong is an effective tool in balancing the chakras. The sound waves of the gong aids in facilitating the flow of energy in our bodies. \nThis experiential workshop begins with an easy but effective breath exercise\, followed by a guided meditation to energize the chakra system. The workshop culminates in a gong sound experience to release energetic blocks\, stimulate circulation and the glandular system. \nNo experience necessary. Please bring a yoga mat or blanket\, as well as a cushion for seated meditation if needed. A limited number of chairs will be available. Gong is not recommended for women in the last trimester of pregnancy. We’ll start with the basics of learning to use a smartphone camera and review the settings for optimal image capture to pro tips and techniques of exposure\, composition and focus that produce the best results. SUMMARY:Painting the Chakra Energies Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Nancy RamseyDate: Saturday\, June 15 from 10am-12pm\nClass size: 2-12 participants\n(Register by June 14; Walk-ins welcome\, space & supplies permitting.) \nChakra Energies by Nancy Ramsey\nParticipants will use a variety of tools for layering and taking away paint to create works in acrylic that represent the energies of the chakras. The process of adding and taking away the different colors will create unique works reflecting each student’s journey with the chakras. \nParticipants will practice layering wet acrylic paints on paper. Then\, will explore a variety of tools for etching into the paint. After exploring the possibilities\, they will choose some favorite techniques to use on their canvases. We will discuss the chakras\, pausing to add a new layer of color after each one. As they add each layer\, participants can consider their own strengths and needs and consider setting intentions as they add and subtract color.
