DESCRIPTION:Glass Pieces by Betsy Mead\nThis workshop has been canceled. \nInstructor: Betsy Mead\nDates: Saturday\, Sept 14 from 12-3pm (Part 1)\nand Thursday\, Sept 19 from 7-9pm (Part 2)\nClass size: 4-10 participants\n(Register by September 10) \nCelebrate music by creating your own small fusible glass bowl or plate using glass decals! The gold\, silver\, black\, blue\, and sepia decals are of different musical instruments and musical notes. Learn how to design an arrangement\, apply the decals\, and what happens to them in the kiln! \nBe creative using these decals made especially for kiln-firing on glass. Students will create their glass pieces on Saturday afternoon\, September 14; then the instructor will take them to her studio for kiln-firing. On Thursday evening\, September 19\, the instructor will return the finished artworks to students for class discussion. All supplies provided. No prior experience needed. \nIf students have a particular instrument they would like to use\, email the instructor at least one week before class. Custom images will be sepia-colored. \n. \n\nAbout the instructor: Betsy Mead is an artist who found glass as her passionate medium\, and enjoys sharing what she has learned with others. SUMMARY:Workshop: Rhythmic Strokes
DESCRIPTION:Rhythmic Strokes by Jenny Nicholson\nRegistration has closed. \nInstructor: Jenny Nicholson\nDate: Sunday\, September 8 from 1-4pm\nClass size: 8-12 participants\n(Register by Sept 7 at 2pm) \nWhile listening to a variety of music we will explore the connections between music and visual art. We will make small and large studies by experimenting with various tools to create gestural lines\, rhythmic strokes and expressive marks. Capturing the essence of musical elements in our own individual interpretation. \nFirst the instructor will present a brief review of works by Paul Klee\, Joan Miro\, Wassily Kandinski\, and other artists who have explored the connection between music and art; next students will start creating black and gray studies\, followed by color studies. We’ll play with the line that a pencil makes with pressure or a light touch\, or the thick and thin swells from a brush\, the organic marks of a pine cone or pine needles\, and wet paint onto a wet surface. \nStudents need to bring: \n\nHB\, 3B\, 4B or 6B pencils\nruler\nscissors\nglue stick\nsmall watercolor set (such as Prang) or tubes of red\, yellow and blue; and mixing brush\nmark making tools (such as pointed and flat brushes\, pine cone\, seashell\, wood reed\, a bundle of pine needles)\nplus any supplies that you want to experiment with\n\nThe supply fee includes watercolor paper\, rice paper\, handouts\, black ink\, balsa wood tool\, and other mark making tools. \n. \n\nAbout the instructor: Jenny Nicholson is a calligrapher and graphic designer and enjoys sharing her love for letterforms and the lively stroke. SUMMARY:Introduction to Brazilian Zouk (Free Dance Class on First Thursday!)
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Dixie Pond and Niranjan DineshDate: First Thursday\, September 5 from 7-8:30pm\nClass size: 4-12 participants\n(Register by September 2) \nBrazilian zouk is a partner dance from Brazil characterized by flowy\, circular movements. The beginner classes will cover the foundations of the dance\, including basic steps\, timing\, and connection. Brazilian zouk derived from Brazilian lambada. Following the lambada craze\, people began dancing lambada steps to slower paced music from the French Caribbean called zouk. Thus\, Brazilian zouk was born! The dance continues to evolve today and can be danced to a variety of music. \nStudents can expect to learn the basic steps of Brazilian zouk as well as timing. I will show you how to recycle any cardboard board game into a one-of-a-kind art book using traditional book binding methods and materials. \n \nObjectives: \n\nHow to create a Japanese Stab-Bound Book\, with multiple stitch variations\nBookbinding terms\, methods and tools\nHow to create your own book cloth from any light to medium weight cotton fabric and interfacing for the spine\nUse game pieces and other art materials to embellish and enhance your book cover and inside pages\n\n \nAll supplies will be provided. SUMMARY:Sketchcrawling in the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. Positive affirmations are great messages to have around an art studio\, office or creative space as reminders of your creative talents. \nDuring this engaging and interactive workshop\, we will explore our core beliefs about being creative and where it comes from\, address our negative self-talk as creatives\, learn the benefits of affirmations\, and how to create our own affirmations. We will also engage in an interactive creative exercise to help us to continue to focus on our affirmations to support our creative muse. You don’t have to be an artist to participate! DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been rescheduled to September 5th. This workshop is free\, but please register in advance to help the instructors plan. \nInstructors: Dixie Pond and Niranjan Dinesh\nDate: Thursday\, August 15 from 7-8:30pm\nClass size: 4-12 participants \nBrazilian zouk is a partner dance from Brazil characterized by flowy\, circular movements. The beginner classes will cover the foundations of the dance\, including basic steps\, timing\, and connection. Brazilian zouk derived from Brazilian lambada. Following the lambada craze\, people began dancing lambada steps to slower paced music from the French Caribbean called zouk. Thus\, Brazilian zouk was born! The dance continues to evolve today and can be danced to a variety of music.  \nStudents can expect to learn the basic steps of Brazilian zouk as well as timing. SUMMARY:Workshop: Acrylics\, Mixing Color for Realism
DESCRIPTION:Old Trap Floats by Jeff Lodge\nInstructor: Jeff Lodge\nDate: Saturday\, August 10 from 11am-2pm\nClass size: 5-12 participants\n(Register by August 7) \nMixing the right color can be challenging. In this workshop\, Jeff will show how to reproduce the colors in a scene using tints\, tones\, shades\, and hues. Common problems and mistakes will be covered\, and students will learn how to get the correct overall tonal balance in a painting\, recreate atmospheric effects\, and use glazing to reduce contrast and blend color areas. \nAlthough acrylics will be used in the workshop\, the theories taught are applicable to all opaque paint mediums (such as acrylic\, oil\, and gouache). Students will create a small painting during the class. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. SUMMARY:Thinking in 3D Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed. \nInstructor: Jonathan Ottke\nDates: Saturday\, July 6 from 10 AM to 1 PM\nClass size: 4-10 participants\n(Register by July 3) \nLearn basic sculpting techniques carving in soapstone or plaster and vermiculite. You will sketch an idea to picture what it will look like; then sculpt\, sand and finish the artwork. You will learn basic sculpting techniques. You’ll use tools such as knives\, rasps and saws; then finish and polish your work. Soapstone finishes beautifully and plaster and vermiculite has a wonderful rugged look! This is a great way to start thinking in three dimensions. The supply fee will be based on your choice of material: \n\n$15 for Plaster or Vermiculite\n$35 for Soapstone\n\nWear clothing that can get messy! \n. \n\nThis workshop is a part of Del Ray Artisans’ Creative Summer Programs. SUMMARY:Sketchcrawling in the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. Participants also have the option to reconvene during the last 15 minutes of the session to share their drawings with the group or publish them on social media. \nEach session will have a different focus: \n\nJune 30:  Documentary Drawing – A sense of place\nJuly 28:  People and Motion – A moment in time\nAugust 25:  Color Media – On the go\n\n. \n\nThis workshop is a part of Del Ray Artisans’ Creative Summer Programs.
