This book tells the life story of a very fine 20th Century artist who was black and includes accounts of his struggles with racism as he sought to make a living as an artist in mid twentieth century America and France. The book features a small number of color reproductions of his paintings and a few photographs of Beauford and his friends. \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. To celebrate\, take one or more of our rhyming programs in September! \nDuring the FUR-DY: Pet Portrait in Glass Workshop honor your favorite pet by creating a portrait with powdered glass! Following the “sgraffito” technique\, students will use glass powder to create black and white portraits of their favorite pets on an 8” x 8″ fusible glass square. (The instructor may be able to bring additional limited colors such as brown\, beige\, and orange. This is TBD.) \nStudents will create their portraits and get them “ready to fire” on Saturday\, September 10 from 9:30am-12pm. After the class the instructor will take the portraits to her studio\, kiln-fire them\, and then return the finished\, framed portraits to students on Wednesday\, September 14 from 7-8pm for a class discussion. \nAll supplies are provided. No experience is needed. Students should bring at least 2 black and white photos of their pet printed on computer paper. The photos should fit nicely on an 8″ x 8″ square. To celebrate\, check out our rhyming programs in September—including our PURTY: Life Drawing Session focused on gesture and short poses. \nDrop-in and practice life drawing on Tuesday\, September 6 from 7-9pm. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our nude model. Traditional drawing media (such as pencils\, pens\, and charcoal) are welcome; and pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. Please do not bring acrylics or oil paints. We don’t supply easels – only plenty of chairs – but you are welcome to bring your own easel if you want to use one. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe first part of this session will be focused on gesture poses (dynamic 1-5 minute poses) to loosen up and participate in a fun\, fast-paced drawing experience. The second hour will be a few short poses for more detailed drawings. \nFees for this session are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Register now or pay at the gallery before the session. DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled by the instructor. \nInstructor: Tracy WilkersonDate/Time: Sunday\, August 21 from 6-9pmClass size: 6-12 participants(Register by August 17) \nLearn the ins and outs of prepping for and mixing resin\, and how to use it as an adhesive\, a covering\, or the main medium. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop… No need to rush\, which is one of the first lessons in using resin! \nThis workshop does not get into using dyes with resin or building big molds to create one-of-a-kind resined tables (as seen on YouTube)\, but this workshop will provide you with a good understanding of how resin works so you can be bold enough to take the next steps in your creative interests. \nAlthough the class is listed for 3 hours\, you can leave once you have finished your creations. Some students finish very quickly while others take the whole 3 hours to create – there is plenty of time for each person to enjoy the creative process while not feeling rushed. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop\, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. \nThe workshop is designed for adults. Children ages 16-17 may participate with parental permission. DESCRIPTION:Del Ray Artisans invites young campers ages 8-12 years old for “Kids Just Wanna Have Fun” Summer Art Camp to spend a week creating art with professional local artist instruction. Students will have an immersive creative journey: painting\, sculpting\, journaling and other artful planned activities. During nice weather\, kids will even have outdoors time to get fresh air\, unwind\, and replenish their creative energy. All artist supplies are provided. There will be an online photo album highlighting the two weeks of art camp available later in August for parents\, friends and the community to enjoy. \nChoose Week One (July 18–22) or Week Two (July 25–29).\nCamp runs Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm.\nFor Ages: 8-12 (class size limited to 10 children per week)\nCost: $350 per child\nScholarship support is available; contact Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org for an application. \nInstructors have taken the ALX Promise pledge and follow the current pandemic policies in accordance with CDC and the State of Virginia during summer camps. DESCRIPTION:This 2-day workshop has been canceled. Consider taking the 2-hour Quilt Patch Mosaic Workshop (no glass cutting) on Tuesday\, August 16\, 2022 from 6:30–8:30pm for a taste of this artform.  \nInstructor: Shona D’Cruz (pronounced “shawna”)\nDates: Friday\, July 1 from 10am–5pm AND Saturday\, July 2 from 10am–12:30pm\nClass size: 6-10 participants\n(Register by midnight on June 24 – one week in advance) \nCreate an 8″ x 8″ mosaic art work for indoor display\, using a variety of materials such as stained glass\, vitreous tiles and other beautiful glass. Have fun while you learn to cut glass and build your piece\, tessera by tessera. We will touch upon design\, adhesives\, appropriate substrates for indoor use\, etc. Learn how to grout and finish your piece. \nStudents are encouraged to create their own simple design\, but some basic design options will be provided by the instructor. Completed pieces are grouted on the final day. \nThis is a 2-day workshop on Friday\, July 1 from 10am–5pm AND Saturday\, July 2 from 10am–12:30pm. Skill level: Beginner to intermediate. Minimum age 16. \nPlease note the following: \n\nPlease wear closed-toed shoes.\nBring an apron if desired.\nThere is a $65 supply fee for this workshop separate from the instruction cost. His life and work were filled with innovative and controversial ideas and approaches to creating art. This book published in 2014 reads like a dictionary\, organized by the letters of the alphabet. Each chapter is filled with this master artist’s genius. \nWhen we meet on June 18th we will have an opportunity to each share what amused\, baffled\, or informed us as we read. SUMMARY:Life Drawing - Gesture & Long Pose
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in and practice life drawing on Tuesday\, June 14 from 7-10pm. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our nude model. Traditional drawing media (such as pencils\, pens\, and charcoal) are welcome; and pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. Please do not bring acrylics or oil paints. We don’t supply easels – only plenty of chairs – but you are welcome to bring your own easel if you want to use one. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe first two hours of this session will be focused on gesture poses (dynamic 1-5 minute poses) to loosen up and participate in a fun\, fast-paced drawing experience. The final hour will be one long pose to practice shading and hatching techniques. \nFees for this session are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been rescheduled to Sunday\, August 21 from 6-9pm. \nInstructor: Tracy WilkersonDate/Time: Sunday\, June 12\, 2022 from 6-9pmCost: $40 for Del Ray Artisans Members and $50 for non-members\, plus a $10 supply feeClass size: 6-12 participants(Register by June 9) \nLearn the ins and outs of prepping for and mixing resin\, and how to use it as an adhesive\, a covering\, or the main medium. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop… No need to rush\, which is one of the first lessons in using resin! \nThis workshop does not get into using dyes with resin or building big molds to create one-of-a-kind resined tables (as seen on YouTube)\, but this workshop will provide you with a good understanding of how resin works so you can be bold enough to take the next steps in your creative interests. \nAlthough the class is listed for 3 hours\, you can leave once you have finished your creations. Some students finish very quickly while others take the whole 3 hours to create – there is plenty of time for each person to enjoy the creative process while not feeling rushed. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop\, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. \nThe workshop is designed for adults. Children ages 16-17 may participate with parental permission.
