DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been cancelled. \nInstructor: Tracy Wilkerson\nDate/Time: Monday\, December 4 from 6-9pm\nCost: $40 Del Ray Artisans member / $50 Non-member; plus a $10 Supply Fee\nClass size: 6-10 participants\n(Register in advance; walk-ins accepted only if space permits.) \nLearn the ins and outs of prepping for and mixing resin\, and how to use it as an adhesive\, a covering\, or the main medium. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop… No need to rush\, which is one of the first lessons in using resin! All supplies are provided\, but feel free to bring personal embellishments for your piece(s). \nThis workshop does not get into using dyes with resin or building big molds to create one-of-a-kind resined tables (as seen on YouTube)\, but this workshop will provide you with a good understanding of how resin works so you can be bold enough to take the next steps in your creative interests. \nAlthough the class is listed for 3 hours\, you can leave once you have finished your creations. Some students finish very quickly while others take the whole 3 hours to create – there is plenty of time for each person to enjoy the creative process while not feeling rushed. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop\, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. \nThe workshop is designed for adults. Children ages 16-17 may participate with parental permission. DESCRIPTION:Book: “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, November 18 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nJoin us on Saturday\, November 18 from 10am-12pm to discuss “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov. \nThe book is an in depth look at the life and loves of Helen Frankenthaler\, who took the New York art scene by storm when she began to pour turpentine thinned paint onto her large canvas laid out on the floor of her studio on October 26\,1952. The painting she made that day\, “Mountains and Sea\,” became the hallmark of her new\, radical style of painting. An approach that was to become known as Color Field Painting. (You can see that painting at the National Gallery here in Washington\, DC.) Helen had returned to NYC after graduating from Bennington in May 1950 with a desire to become a famous artist in the soon-to-be-center of the world’s art scene. The book’s primary focus is on what happened to Helen in the New York art scene in the 1950s. \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. SUMMARY:Life Drawing Session - Gesture and Short Pose
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in and practice life drawing on one select Tuesday evening each month. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our nude model. \nTraditional drawing media (such as pencils\, pens\, and charcoal) are welcome; and pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. Please do not bring acrylics or oil paints. We don’t supply easels – only plenty of chairs – but you are welcome to bring your own easel if you want to use one. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe first part of this session will be focused on gesture poses (dynamic 1-5 minute poses) to loosen up and participate in a fun\, fast-paced drawing experience. The second hour will be a few short poses for more detailed drawings. \nFee for each session is $8 for Del Ray Artisans members and $10 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:Practiced by artists and naturalists alike\, nature journaling is a centuries-old exercise in refining our powers of observation\, appreciation for nature\, drawing skills\, and mindful presence. This group is open to all experience levels as we meet to sketch\, connect\, and learn together! \nWe meet at 10am in front of Del Ray Artisans on the final Saturday morning of every month. Mark your calendar or set a reminder in Eventbrite. \nParticipants will need to bring their own sketchbooks and supplies. We will have plenty of time for sketching in nature before gathering again at 11:30am to share our sketches and observations and discuss tips and tools for nature journaling in the wild. SUMMARY:“Little Pine’s Halloween” Reading and Meet the Author: Nina Tisara
DESCRIPTION:Come hear the author herself! Meet mosaic artist/photographer and Alexandria legend Nina Tisara on Saturday\, October 21 from 5 to 7:30pm at Del Ray Artisans gallery. She will give a special reading of her story\, Little Pine’s Halloween\, at 6pm. \nTisara wrote the story for her children when they were young. It tells of a young pine tree who plans a Halloween party for his neighbor trees\, but worries that his pine needles won’t turn pretty colors like theirs. \nTisara recently unearthed a typed version of the story and shared it with her children. Her youngest\, Lynn\, suggested she turn it into a book. And she did! \nThe front and back covers\, designed by Sharmila Karamchandani and Steven Halperson\, show mosaics Tisara recently made to illustrate the story. The mosaics\, which show Little Pine and Mother Pine surrounded by colorful trees\, both received Honorable Mention recognition in Art League exhibitions. \nChildren (and adults) are encouraged to wear costumes. DESCRIPTION:Drop-in and practice life drawing on one select Tuesday evening each month. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Kelsey Joyce\, kelseyjoyceart@gmail.com\nDate/Time: Saturday\, October 14 from 9am-12pm\nCost: $50 Del Ray Artisans member / $60 Non-member; plus a $15 Supply Fee\nClass size: 4-12 participants\n(Register by noon on October 13) \nLearn how to design and build a sculpture of an original imaginary creature in the style of Mexican folk art alebrijes. Alebrijes were created by Pedro Linares Lopez\, a Mexican cartoneria artisan who created Papier-mâché figurines that he coined alebrijes after imagining them in a fever dream. Alebrijes are creatures that consist of features that represent multiple creatures and the four elements of nature. Dragons are great alebrije because they have all four elements of nature: air represented in their wings\, fire represented in their flames\, land represented in their legs\, and water represented in their ability to swim. \nIn this workshop we will explore the cultural importance of Linares’ alebrijes and how they have become a tradition in Mexico. We will build our imaginary creatures with armature sculpting wire\, clay\, papier mache\, aluminum foil\, resin eyeballs\, acrylic paint\, glitter\, feathers\, and many more mixed media materials. We will work swiftly to get as much done as possible and will be utilizing hair dryers to help us dry our papier mache & artworks quickly. I look forward to you bringing your imagination to life! \nAll materials will be supplied to use during the workshop to create your creature. The Art of Swords and Sorcery CHALLENGE ROYALE at Del Ray Artisans during Art on the Avenue. \nMeet at 10am in front of the gallery and present your pool noodle ‘sword’ for inspection and registration. The challenge begins at 11am on the playing fields of the Mount Vernon Rec Center next to the gallery. When challenged by another costumed participant\, you may yield or duel! Inflatable ‘swords’ are also allowed. NO other foam\, wood\, rubber or metal allowed. This is a KID-FRIENDLY event for ages 6+. \nThis event is held in conjunction with the Curses! Foiled Again! The art of swords and sorcery art exhibit.
