SUMMARY:Imaginary Creature Workshop (Registration Closed)
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Kelsey Joyce\, kelseyjoyceart@gmail.com\nDate/Time: Saturday\, June 10 from 9am-12pm\nCost: $50 Del Ray Artisans member / $60 Non-member; plus a $15 Supply Fee\nClass size: 4-10 participants\n(Register by midnight on June 7) \nLearn how to design and build a sculpture of an original imaginary creature in the style of Mexican folk art alebrijes. Alebrijes were created by Pedro Linares Lopez\, a Mexican cartoneria artisan who created Papier-mâché figurines that he coined alebrijes after imagining them in a fever dream. Alebrijes are creatures that consist of features that represent multiple creatures and the four elements of nature. Dragons are great alebrije because they have all four elements of nature: air represented in their wings\, fire represented in their flames\, land represented in their legs\, and water represented in their ability to swim. \nIn this workshop we will explore the cultural importance of Linares’ alebrijes and how they have become a tradition in Mexico. We will build our imaginary creatures with armature sculpting wire\, clay\, papier mache\, aluminum foil\, resin eyeballs\, acrylic paint\, glitter\, feathers\, and many more mixed media materials. We will work swiftly to get as much done as possible and will be utilizing hair dryers to help us dry our papier mache & artworks quickly. I look forward to you bringing your imagination to life! \nAll materials will be supplied to use during the workshop to create your creature. SUMMARY:Life Drawing Session - Gesture and Short Pose
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in and practice life drawing on one select Tuesday evening each month. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our nude model. \nTraditional drawing media (such as pencils\, pens\, and charcoal) are welcome; and pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. Please do not bring acrylics or oil paints. We don’t supply easels – only plenty of chairs – but you are welcome to bring your own easel if you want to use one. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe first part of this session will be focused on gesture poses (dynamic 1-5 minute poses) to loosen up and participate in a fun\, fast-paced drawing experience. DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled by the instructor. \nInstructor: Tracy WilkersonDate/Time: Sunday\, August 21 from 6-9pmClass size: 6-12 participants(Register by August 17) \nLearn the ins and outs of prepping for and mixing resin\, and how to use it as an adhesive\, a covering\, or the main medium. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop… No need to rush\, which is one of the first lessons in using resin! \nThis workshop does not get into using dyes with resin or building big molds to create one-of-a-kind resined tables (as seen on YouTube)\, but this workshop will provide you with a good understanding of how resin works so you can be bold enough to take the next steps in your creative interests. \nAlthough the class is listed for 3 hours\, you can leave once you have finished your creations. Some students finish very quickly while others take the whole 3 hours to create – there is plenty of time for each person to enjoy the creative process while not feeling rushed. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop\, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. \nThe workshop is designed for adults. Children ages 16-17 may participate with parental permission. DESCRIPTION:Del Ray Artisans invites young campers ages 8-12 years old for “Kids Just Wanna Have Fun” Summer Art Camp to spend a week creating art with professional local artist instruction. Students will have an immersive creative journey: painting\, sculpting\, journaling and other artful planned activities. During nice weather\, kids will even have outdoors time to get fresh air\, unwind\, and replenish their creative energy. All artist supplies are provided. There will be an online photo album highlighting the two weeks of art camp available later in August for parents\, friends and the community to enjoy. \nChoose Week One (July 18–22) or Week Two (July 25–29).\nCamp runs Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm.\nFor Ages: 8-12 (class size limited to 10 children per week)\nCost: $350 per child\nScholarship support is available; contact Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org for an application. \nInstructors have taken the ALX Promise pledge and follow the current pandemic policies in accordance with CDC and the State of Virginia during summer camps. SUMMARY:CANCELED: Making Mosaic Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day workshop has been canceled. Consider taking the 2-hour Quilt Patch Mosaic Workshop (no glass cutting) on Tuesday\, August 16\, 2022 from 6:30–8:30pm for a taste of this artform.  \nInstructor: Shona D’Cruz (pronounced “shawna”)\nDates: Friday\, July 1 from 10am–5pm AND Saturday\, July 2 from 10am–12:30pm\nClass size: 6-10 participants\n(Register by midnight on June 24 – one week in advance) \nCreate an 8″ x 8″ mosaic art work for indoor display\, using a variety of materials such as stained glass\, vitreous tiles and other beautiful glass. Have fun while you learn to cut glass and build your piece\, tessera by tessera. We will touch upon design\, adhesives\, appropriate substrates for indoor use\, etc. Learn how to grout and finish your piece. \nStudents are encouraged to create their own simple design\, but some basic design options will be provided by the instructor. Completed pieces are grouted on the final day. \nThis is a 2-day workshop on Friday\, July 1 from 10am–5pm AND Saturday\, July 2 from 10am–12:30pm. Skill level: Beginner to intermediate. Minimum age 16. \nPlease note the following: \n\nPlease wear closed-toed shoes.\nBring an apron if desired.\nThere is a $65 supply fee for this workshop separate from the instruction cost. The supply fee includes all glass\, backerboard\, grout\, and the use of tools during class. The book for this meeting is “The Duchamp Dictionary” by Thomas Girst. \nMarcel Duchamp was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His life and work were filled with innovative and controversial ideas and approaches to creating art. This book published in 2014 reads like a dictionary\, organized by the letters of the alphabet. Each chapter is filled with this master artist’s genius. \nWhen we meet on June 18th we will have an opportunity to each share what amused\, baffled\, or informed us as we read. SUMMARY:Life Drawing - Gesture & Long Pose
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in and practice life drawing on Tuesday\, June 14 from 7-10pm. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our nude model. Traditional drawing media (such as pencils\, pens\, and charcoal) are welcome; and pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. Please do not bring acrylics or oil paints. We don’t supply easels – only plenty of chairs – but you are welcome to bring your own easel if you want to use one. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe first two hours of this session will be focused on gesture poses (dynamic 1-5 minute poses) to loosen up and participate in a fun\, fast-paced drawing experience. The final hour will be one long pose to practice shading and hatching techniques. \nFees for this session are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been rescheduled to Sunday\, August 21 from 6-9pm. \nInstructor: Tracy WilkersonDate/Time: Sunday\, June 12\, 2022 from 6-9pmCost: $40 for Del Ray Artisans Members and $50 for non-members\, plus a $10 supply feeClass size: 6-12 participants(Register by June 9) \nLearn the ins and outs of prepping for and mixing resin\, and how to use it as an adhesive\, a covering\, or the main medium. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop… No need to rush\, which is one of the first lessons in using resin! \nThis workshop does not get into using dyes with resin or building big molds to create one-of-a-kind resined tables (as seen on YouTube)\, but this workshop will provide you with a good understanding of how resin works so you can be bold enough to take the next steps in your creative interests. \nAlthough the class is listed for 3 hours\, you can leave once you have finished your creations. Some students finish very quickly while others take the whole 3 hours to create – there is plenty of time for each person to enjoy the creative process while not feeling rushed. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop\, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. \nThe workshop is designed for adults. Children ages 16-17 may participate with parental permission.
