SUMMARY:OUTDOOR: Urban Sketchbooking Meetup (June 14\, 2020)
DESCRIPTION:Meets second Sundays from January-June\n \nUrban Sketchbooking emphasizes storytelling that conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings completed from direct observations. This Del Ray meeting operates on a drop-in basis during afternoons of the second Sunday of each month\, so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us to produce still life\, figure\, or architecture subjects in your sketchbook. Participants will spend some time putting their skills into practice and then reconvene for a review of finished works. \nNormally the fee for each 2-hour session is $8 for members and $10 for non-members; however\, the June 14th date will be FREE! \nDel Ray Artisans gallery is temporarily closed. We will meet outdoors in front of the gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria VA 22301) and walk to a nearby park. \nThe session will be cancelled if the chance of rain is greater than 50%. I will show you how to recycle any cardboard board game into a one-of-a-kind art book using traditional book binding methods and materials. \n \nObjectives: \n\nHow to create a Japanese Stab-Bound Book\, with multiple stitch variations\nBookbinding terms\, methods and tools\nHow to create your own book cloth from any light to medium weight cotton fabric and interfacing for the spine\nUse game pieces and other art materials to embellish and enhance your book cover and inside pages\n\n \nAll supplies will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. Positive affirmations are great messages to have around an art studio\, office or creative space as reminders of your creative talents. \nDuring this engaging and interactive workshop\, we will explore our core beliefs about being creative and where it comes from\, address our negative self-talk as creatives\, learn the benefits of affirmations\, and how to create our own affirmations. We will also engage in an interactive creative exercise to help us to continue to focus on our affirmations to support our creative muse. You don’t have to be an artist to participate! DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been rescheduled to September 5th. This workshop is free\, but please register in advance to help the instructors plan. \nInstructors: Dixie Pond and Niranjan Dinesh\nDate: Thursday\, August 15 from 7-8:30pm\nClass size: 4-12 participants \nBrazilian zouk is a partner dance from Brazil characterized by flowy\, circular movements. The beginner classes will cover the foundations of the dance\, including basic steps\, timing\, and connection. Brazilian zouk derived from Brazilian lambada. Following the lambada craze\, people began dancing lambada steps to slower paced music from the French Caribbean called zouk. Thus\, Brazilian zouk was born! The dance continues to evolve today and can be danced to a variety of music.  \nStudents can expect to learn the basic steps of Brazilian zouk as well as timing. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Nancy RamseyDate: Saturday\, June 15 from 10am-12pm\nClass size: 2-12 participants\n(Register by June 14; Walk-ins welcome\, space & supplies permitting.) \nChakra Energies by Nancy Ramsey\nParticipants will use a variety of tools for layering and taking away paint to create works in acrylic that represent the energies of the chakras. The process of adding and taking away the different colors will create unique works reflecting each student’s journey with the chakras. \nParticipants will practice layering wet acrylic paints on paper. Then\, will explore a variety of tools for etching into the paint. After exploring the possibilities\, they will choose some favorite techniques to use on their canvases. We will discuss the chakras\, pausing to add a new layer of color after each one. As they add each layer\, participants can consider their own strengths and needs and consider setting intentions as they add and subtract color. Both nude and clothed models are featured. (Models will be nude unless otherwise noted.) These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint from our live models. We don’t supply easels but you are welcome to bring your own if you want to use one. Please no acrylics or oils; pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe fee for each three-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. Two-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. \nLong Pose Sessions\nIf you want to spend an extended amount of time on a pose\, come to our long pose sessions.
