Six socially-distanced chairs will be set up around a critter-containing vivarium under a canopy outdoors near the gallery. But I believe that Americans are a more unique breed\, and our symbol should reflect that. Virginia\, Tennessee\, and North Carolina are blessed with being the global biodiversity hotspot for salamanders. Nowhere in the world has as many. In this talk\, I will tell you why Americans are better represented by salamanders than by the bald eagle. \nAbout the Presenter: Erin Anthony is currently serving as Vice President of the Virginia Herpetological Society\, a volunteer run non-profit dedicated to the conservation and education of native reptiles and amphibians. This workshop is free\, but please register in advance to help the instructors plan. \nInstructors: Dixie Pond and Niranjan Dinesh\nDate: Thursday\, August 15 from 7-8:30pm\nClass size: 4-12 participants \nBrazilian zouk is a partner dance from Brazil characterized by flowy\, circular movements. The beginner classes will cover the foundations of the dance\, including basic steps\, timing\, and connection. Brazilian zouk derived from Brazilian lambada. Following the lambada craze\, people began dancing lambada steps to slower paced music from the French Caribbean called zouk. Thus\, Brazilian zouk was born! The dance continues to evolve today and can be danced to a variety of music.  \nStudents can expect to learn the basic steps of Brazilian zouk as well as timing. SUMMARY:Life Drawing - Short/Long Poses
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a chance to hone your figure drawing skills? Del Ray Artisans offers a range of open life drawing sessions for just this purpose. Both nude and clothed models are featured. (Models will be nude unless otherwise noted.) These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint from our live models. We don’t supply easels but you are welcome to bring your own if you want to use one. Please no acrylics or oils; pastels\, watercolor and ink are permissible. All skill levels are welcome. \nThe fee for each three-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. Two-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. \nShort/Long Pose Sessions\nThe three-hour short/long pose sessions start with some short 1 to 5-minute warm-up poses and progressively move into longer poses lasting 10 to 45 minutes. SUMMARY:Sketchcrawling in the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Joan BickelhauptSessions: June 30\, July 28\, and August 25\nClass size: 3-15 participants\nRegister in advance. Registration ends at 6pm the Friday before each session. Participants may bring their own supplies\, or purchase supplies from the instructor during their session. \nImprove your skills in visual storytelling by creating images from direct observation that convey a sense of space and a moment in time. \nSign up for one\, two\, or three “on the go” sessions to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink\, pencil\, or watercolor. Participants will then spend their time putting those suggestions into practice by making casual figure\, portrait\, cafe\, or street drawings. DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed. \nInstructor: Jonathan Ottke\nDates: Saturday\, July 6 from 10 AM to 1 PM\nClass size: 4-10 participants\n(Register by July 3) \nLearn basic sculpting techniques carving in soapstone or plaster and vermiculite. You will sketch an idea to picture what it will look like; then sculpt\, sand and finish the artwork. You will learn basic sculpting techniques. You’ll use tools such as knives\, rasps and saws; then finish and polish your work. Soapstone finishes beautifully and plaster and vermiculite has a wonderful rugged look! This is a great way to start thinking in three dimensions.
