SUMMARY:Creative Book Club: "Ways of Seeing" by John Berger
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Ways of Seeing” by John Berger\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, October 11\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nJoin us on October 11 at 10am to discuss John Berger’s “Ways of Seeing”. It’s an adaptation of a 4-part series he did for the BBC. As described by Michael Messmer\, “Berger challenges the notion that Western art is solely the product of individual geniuses by exploring the social and economic contexts in which art is produced and consumed. The book comprises seven essays\, some of which combine text and images\, presenting a non-linear format that invites readers to engage critically with visual culture.” \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings at Del Ray Artisans gallery to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. This is a free event; donations are appreciated. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club: “Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies” by Ross King
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies” by Ross King\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, August 2\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \n“Claude Monet’s water lily paintings are among the most iconic and beloved works of art of the past century. Yet these entrancing images were created at a time of terrible private turmoil and sadness for the artist. The dramatic history behind these paintings is little known; Ross King’s Mad Enchantment tells the full story for the first time and\, in the process\, presents a compelling and original portrait of one of our most popular and cherished artists.”\n—Bloomsbury Publishing\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club: “Falling Rocket: James Whistler\, John Ruskin\, and the Battle for Modern Art” by Paul Thomas Murphy
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Falling Rocket: James Whistler\, John Ruskin\, and the Battle for Modern Art” by Paul Thomas Murphy\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, April 12\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \n“The untold story of the artistic battle between James Abbot MacNeill Whistler and John Ruskin over Whistler’s controversial\, ground-breaking Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket. \n“In November 1878\, America’s greatest painter sued England’s greatest critic for a bad review. The painter won—but ruined himself in the process. The painter: James Abbot MacNeill Whistler\, whose combination of incredible talent\, unflagging energy\, and relentless self-promotion had by that time brought him to the very edge of artistic preeminence. The critic: John Ruskin\, Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University\, whose four-decades’ worth of prolific and highly respected literary output on aesthetics had made him England’s unchallenged and seemingly unchallengeable arbiter of art. \n“Though Whistler and Ruskin both lived in London and moved in the same artistic world\, they had\, until June\, 1877\, managed to remain entirely clear of one another. This was unusual because Whistler had a mercurial temperament\, a belligerent personality\, and seemed to thrive on opposition: he once challenged a man to a duel because the man accused the painter of sleeping with his wife. (Whistler had\, in fact\, slept with the man’s wife.)” \n—Excerpt from Pegasus Books\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. Future book selections will be announced on this website and in the Weekly eNews email in advance. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Marshall Carolus at marshallcarolus@aol.com. \n.

SUMMARY:Creative Book Club - “Paris in Ruins: Love\, War\, and the Birth of Impressionism” by Sebastian Smee
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Paris in Ruins: Love\, War\, and the Birth of Impressionism” by Sebastian Smee\nFacilitator: Marshall Carolus\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, February 1\, 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \n“The Pulitzer Prize–winning art critic’s gripping account of the “Terrible Year” in Paris and its monumental impact on the rise of Impressionism. \nFrom the summer of 1870 to the spring of 1871\, famously dubbed the “Terrible Year” by Victor Hugo\, Paris and its people were besieged\, starved\, and forced into surrender by Germans―then imperiled again as radical republicans established a breakaway Commune\, ultimately crushed by the French Army after bloody street battles and the burning of central Paris. As renowned art critic Sebastian Smee shows\, it was against the backdrop of these tumultuous times that the Impressionist movement was born―in response to violence\, civil war\, and political intrigue. \nIn stirring and exceptionally vivid prose\, Smee tells the story of those dramatic days through the eyes of great figures of Impressionism. Édouard Manet\, Berthe Morisot\, and Edgar Degas were trapped in Paris during the siege and deeply enmeshed in its politics. Others\, including Pierre-August Renoir and Frédéric Bazille\, joined regiments outside of the capital\, while Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro fled the country just in time. In the aftermath\, these artists developed a newfound sense of the fragility of life. That feeling for transience―reflected in Impressionism’s emphasis on fugitive light\, shifting seasons\, glimpsed street scenes\, and the impermanence of all things―became the movement’s great contribution to the history of art.” \n—W. W. Norton & Company\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening author talk and book signing at Del Ray Artisans gallery\, featuring Bianca Bosker. In Get the Picture\, Bosker immerses herself in the nerve center of art and the people who live for it: gallerists\, collectors\, curators\, and\, of course\, artists themselves—the kind who work multiple jobs to afford their studios while scrabbling to get eyes on their art. Bosker stretches canvases until her fingers blister\, talks her way into A-list parties for billionaire collectors\, sells art as a gallerist\, and has her face sat on by a nearly-naked performance artist. As a museum security guard\, she forces herself to stare at a single sculpture for hours on end. Bosker discovers not only the inner workings of the art machine but also a more expansive way of living. Probing everything from cave paintings to Instagram\, from the science of sight to the importance of beauty\, Get the Picture examines art’s role in our culture\, our economy\, and our hearts. \nPlease register in advance through the Alexandria Library website. This event is organized by the Friends of the Duncan Library\, a neighbor volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Creative Book Club – “Studio of the South: Van Gogh in Provence” by Martin Bailey
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Studio of the South: Van Gogh in Provence” by Martin Bailey\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, May 18 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nJoin us to discuss “Studio of the South: Van Gogh in Provence” by Martin Bailey. The book tells the story of Van Gogh’s stay in Arles. \n“For Van Gogh\, the south of France was an exciting new land\, bursting with life. He walked into the hills inspired by the landscapes\, and painted harvest scenes in the heat of summer. He visited a fishing village where he saw the Mediterranean for the first time\, energetically capturing it in paint. He painted portraits of friends and locals\, and flower still life paintings\, culminating in the now iconic Sunflowers. He rented the Yellow House\, and gradually did it up\, calling it ‘an artist’s house’\, inviting Paul Gauguin to join him there. This encounter was to have a profound impact on both of the artists. They painted side by side\, their collaboration coming to a dramatic end a few months later. The difficulties Van Gogh faced led to his eventual decision to retreat to the asylum at Saint-Remy. \n“Based on extensive original research\, the book reveals discoveries that throw new light on the legendary artist and give a definitive account of his fifteen months in Provence\, including his time at the Yellow House\, his collaboration with Gauguin and its tragic and shocking ending.” \n–Frances Lincoln\, Publisher \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is free and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. Future book selections will be announced on this website and in the Weekly eNews email in advance. \nIf you have questions\, please contact our book club leader Rusty Lynn at rustylynn@earthlink.net. \nFace masks are recommended inside the gallery. \n.

SUMMARY:Creative Book Club - “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, November 18 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nJoin us on Saturday\, November 18 from 10am-12pm to discuss “Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York” by Alexander Nemerov. \nThe book is an in depth look at the life and loves of Helen Frankenthaler\, who took the New York art scene by storm when she began to pour turpentine thinned paint onto her large canvas laid out on the floor of her studio on October 26\,1952. The painting she made that day\, “Mountains and Sea\,” became the hallmark of her new\, radical style of painting. An approach that was to become known as Color Field Painting. (You can see that painting at the National Gallery here in Washington\, DC.) Helen had returned to NYC after graduating from Bennington in May 1950 with a desire to become a famous artist in the soon-to-be-center of the world’s art scene. The book’s primary focus is on what happened to Helen in the New York art scene in the 1950s. \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. SUMMARY:Creative Book Club – “Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Ross King
DESCRIPTION:Book: “Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Ross King\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, August 19 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nThe book for our August 19th discussion is “Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Ross King. The book is about the construction of the largest dome ever built by the 15th century. It had been a challenge for the architects and builders of the cathedral in Florence for several hundred years. So when Brunelleschi devised a plan for the building and won the job\, it became a central concern in the city. Ross King is an art historian who delves into the art\, as well as the political and social challenges of the period. I have read a number of his books\, and I am sure whoever gets into reading it will be rewarded in ways they never expected. \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. DESCRIPTION:Book: “Why A Painting Is Like A Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art” by Nancy G. Heller\nFacilitator: Rusty Lynn\nMeeting Date: Saturday\, April 22 from 10am-12pm\n(Drop-in\, set a reminder in Eventbrite) \nThe book for our April 22nd discussion is Why A Painting Is Like A Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art by Nancy G. Heller. \n“How is a painting like a pizza? Both depend on visual balance for much of their overall appeal and\, though both can be judged by a set of established standards pizzas and paintings must ultimately be evaluated in terms of individual taste. By using such commonsense examples and making unexpected connections\, this book helps even the most skeptical viewers feel comfortable around contemporary art and see aspects of it they would otherwise miss.” —Princeton University Press (Publisher) \nThe Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors.
