DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Alexandria Arts Alliance’s Party for the Arts celebrating the arts’ impact and resilience as part of National Arts & Humanities Month. The party is on Saturday\, October 8\, 2022 from 4-7pm at the Canal Center Plaza\, Alexandria’s newest waterfront venue in the Old Town North Arts District. The event will feature performances on multiple outdoor stages and indoor galleries. \nThe Alexandria Arts Alliance\, in partnership with local visual arts spaces including Principle Gallery\, Kyo Gallery\, Galactic Panther Gallery\, the Athenaeum and Del Ray Artisans will be presenting the first-of-its-kind exhibition featuring artists and art that best represent and highlight Alexandria’s power to inspire\, spark change\, and contribute to the vibrant\, thriving and inclusive Alexandria community! \nThis collaborative exhibition will launch during the Party for the Arts. The Canal Center Gallery Exhibition will run for a special limited time—from October 8–16\, 2022. His work has been exhibited nationally\, he has taught classes and workshops at multiple clay studios\, and he was chosen as a Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist in 2016. We hope it inspires you to sign up to participate in our Creative Card Swap. \n \nIn 2020 the “We’re all in this Together” Card Swap was started to keep artists connected to each other during the pandemic. The activity was so popular it became an ongoing\, recurring Del Ray Artisans program now called Creative Card Swap. It also takes a little effort to offer something no longer needed to others rather than tossing it in the trash. The Second Life art exhibit brings into focus this thought-change concept\, from the artwork utilizing recycled materials to the workshops and events. \nThe featured artwork incorporates at least 50% recycled materials\, whether through items used or by taking an older piece and repurposing it into new art. Local artists also share how they recycle/reuse or share items no longer needed with the community. With the COVID-19 pandemic\, uptick in violence\, and social and political strife\, we have all been feeling off-kilter. In some ways\, this is reminiscent of the period during WWI\, where artists expressed their discontent towards violence\, war\, and nationalism. They did so by rejecting logic\, reason\, and decadence through an artistic expression of nonsense\, irrationality\, and unconventionalism. We all have been going through some challenging times during this COVID-19 pandemic. Our lives have changed drastically due to the global quarantine\, and we have had to make many adjustments in our own unique ways. Quarantine Creations is a Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls exhibit in partnership with VCA Alexandria. \nPhoto Album | Online Store \nThe artwork is viewable online and in-person during regular business hours (Monday-Friday 8am-8pm\, Saturday 8am-6pm). Visitors MUST wear a mask and let the front desk know they are there to view the art exhibit. \nView the online store! Artwork may also be purchased from the online store\, and then picked up curbside by appointment by contacting Stephanie Frederick at VCAGWW2020@gmail.com. \n“Prepared” by Sunny Chen\, acrylic on canvas\, $128\, 14″ x 12″\nAll the artwork on display is by Del Ray Artisans members. Artists are donating 20% of the purchase price of sold pieces to Del Ray Artisans\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. \nThe exhibit is at VCA Alexandria (2660 Duke Street\, Alexandria\, VA 22314). For most of the run of the exhibit\, clients were not allowed into the facility. In preparation of the facility reopening to clients\, additional artworks were added to the exhibit on June 1\, 2021. Hiller\nOnline Album | Video Tour \nDel Ray Artisans is honored to showcase over four decades of photography from longtime member\, Oscar and Emmy winner John W. Hiller with a special two-week exhibit (July 1-17\, 2021). The work ranges from his solitary landscapes of the American West to the tranquility of the gardens of Japan\, as well as contemporary experiential imagery. \nVisit the gallery on First Thursday\, July 1 for a preview of the exhibit or reserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, July 2 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 15 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \nJohn called Alexandria home for 40 years. He was an active member of Del Ray Artisans and volunteered his expertise for years as the Historian and Director of Archives\, and documented and photographed exhibitions for online platforms. John was born in Altadena\, California in 1935 and passed away in 2020 at the age of 84. \nJohn was modest and quiet about his career\, but this local cinematographer and photographer was the recipient of an Oscar for the 1984 documentary short “The Stone Carvers” about the Gothic architectural adornments on the Washington National Cathedral. He also received 20 Emmys for various other projects. For 31 years he worked in the Smithsonian’s Motion Picture Unit as a producer\, director\, photography director\, cinematographer\, videographer\, editor\, and still photographer. John also previously worked in Hollywood\, for the American Red Cross\, USIA\, and the U.S. Navy.
