SUMMARY:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation (2/5-2/27)
DESCRIPTION:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation Art Exhibit\nFebruary 5 – 27\, 2021\n“COVID Nighthawks reimagined” by Kelly MacConomy\nView Online \nThe great American painter Edward Hopper is famous for his canvases depicting the isolationist urban landscape as well as the sweeping solitude and unpopulated vacancy of the dunes of Cape Cod. His 1942 painting “Nighthawks” is Hopper’s most recognizable work. It is the visual narrative of a late-night New York City Greenwich Village diner scene\, bereft of a bustling business\, depicting three solo customers and a solemn soda jerk. \nIn the time of COVID-19\, quarantines\, shutdowns\, lockdowns\, orders of stay-at-home and safer-at-home have created a climate of extreme alienation and social deprivation. After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation is the member-only show at Del Ray Artisans opening Friday\, February 5 and on exhibit until Saturday\, February 27\, 2021. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, February 5 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \n“Homage Bar” by Gordon Thomas Frank\nArtists present their interpretations of what makes Hopper’s imagery quintessentially American: perseverance\, fortitude\, diversity\, and an egalitarian spirit in spite of adversity\, impoverishment\, and social injustice. As February advances into the new year and a new hope\, this show expresses the anthem of a new dawn: still we rise as one\, stronger together. \nThe After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation exhibit is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Regular gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-6pm\, and Saturdays 12-4pm. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. Del Ray Artisans is ALX Promise certified and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. Please wear a face mask and maintain 6′ of personal space. \nFor more information\, contact the curator Kelly MacConomy (kmacconomy@gmail.com) or Director of Curating Kelly Postula (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org).

SUMMARY:Hidden World (1/8-1/30)
DESCRIPTION:Hidden World Art Exhibit\nJanuary 8 – 30\, 2021\n“The Eye of the Abyss” by Nancy M. Galib\nView Online \nThe Hidden World art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans is a visual representation of things that are not readily visible in our ordinary lives—an exploration of microscopic organisms\, macro depictions of nature\, the metaphysical world\, emotions\, sounds\, and more. \nWe have all been affected – in one way or another – by an unseen and mysterious virus. But even these pathogens\, when revealed under a microscope\, have their own hidden\, but awful\, beauty. It challenges us to look at our world more deeply and with new eyes. \nWhether it is the mysteries of the universe\, or just something in your own backyard\, the world is rife with surprises waiting to be uncovered. The artists in this exhibit looked deeply into the world\, into their emotions\, or just into their imagination to uncover some part of the Hidden World. You are called to explore what the exhibit reveals to you. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, January 8 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \nVisit the gallery to see the artwork in person or view the online photo album. Congratulations to the award winners: \n\nBest in Show – “Bubble Up” by Mary Elizabeth Gosselink\nCurator’s Choice – “Ebbs and Flows of Exploration” by Ada Oppengeim\nMost Inventive – “Meeting of the Minds” by Danny Robbins\nHonorable Mention – “Horizons” by Joseph Schultz\n\nRegister now for these special workshops held in conjunction with the exhibit: \nHidden World: Collage in a Box with Susan Farrer on Sunday\, January 10 from 1:30-4:30pm. Capture your ideas and images by creating a “hidden world” collage that tucks into a 7.5 x 10″ wooden box with a hinged lid. Learn about collage materials and techniques as you combine pictures of what’s important to you – whether something experienced in the natural world (people\, plants\, animals\, birds\, insects\, even microscopic organisms)\, or in your personal or inner emotional world. The finished box will be ready to hang on a wall or display on a table. No experience needed! (Register by January 5) \nHidden Layers: The Joys of Gel Printing with Eileen O’Brien on Sunday\, January 24 from 3-6pm. Gel plate printing is a fun and easy way to create beautiful one-of-a-kind prints without a press. This class introduces the basic techniques of gel printing\, and instruction on developing plates with multiple layers. Plates and all other materials provided. Participants will learn to pull prints using different paints and papers\, found objects\, stamps\, stencils and natural elements. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. SUMMARY:POSTPONED: 19th Amendment\, War of the Roses
DESCRIPTION:Schedule Update: In compliance with the Governor’s directive to avoid large events and consideration of Alexandria City Public Schools’ schedule\, Del Ray Artisans has rescheduled this members and high school students’ exhibit from April 2020 to November 2020 and extended the invitation to enter to 2020 high school graduates. \nThe original exhibit title was 19th Amendment\, War of the Roses. Since the postponement\, the exhibit has been revised to be inclusive of current events. The new exhibit title is Women’s Right to Vote: 100 Years Since the 19th Amendment. \nView the Call for Entry \n\n“Vote” by Drew\nCelebrating the 100-year Anniversary of the 19th Amendment\, the 19th Amendment\, War of the Roses art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans pays tribute to the rights we enjoy today because of the battle won for women’s right to vote in 1920. This amendment not only gave women the right to vote\, but also led the way to more overall equality and social reform. The exhibit features artwork by Del Ray Artisans members and local high school students. \nArtist awards will be presented by Elizabeth Bennett-Parker\, Vice Mayor of Alexandria\, in both the high school category and the members category. Special contributions towards awards provided by the Kiwanis Club of Alexandria\, Community Partner McD Mateos\, and the curators. \n“A Hooded Intellect” by Amy Kitchin Hower\nThe National American Woman Suffrage Association\, formed in 1890\, adopted the colors white\, golden yellow and purple. Symbolizing purity and hope\, golden-yellow banners were used in parades to express the spirit of the movement. Soon\, yellow roses became an emblem of the suffrage cause. In contrast\, anti-suffragists adopted red roses as their symbol. What ensued was a “War of the Roses.” Are you a “suff” or “antis“? Which color rose would you wear? – yellow or red. \nAlthough Harry T. Burn\, the youngest member of the Tennessee state legislature wore a red rose on his lapel\, his surprising “yea” vote on August 18\, 1920\, allowed the passing and ratification of the 19th Amendment\, which guaranteed women the right to vote\, and moved millions of women closer to equality. “Do the right thing” his mother urged him. Harry stands on the right side of history because he did the “right thing.” Ever wonder what life would be like if Harry Burn had voted ‘nay’ to women’s rights? \nFor more information\, please contact the curators Amy Kitchin Hower (alkitchin.dc@gmail.com)\, Karen Schmitz (kschmitzart@gmail.com)\, and Drew Cariaso (druamaart@comcast.net).

SUMMARY:Tell Me a Story (Online 3/30-6/10)
DESCRIPTION:Tell Me a Story Art Exhibit\nOnline Exhibit runs March 30-June 10\, 2020\nThis is the story of curating an art exhibit at an unusual time. \nThe Tell Me a Story exhibit opened on March 6\, 2020 at Del Ray Artisans gallery with a busy reception and high praise. The walls are packed with artwork: 189 pieces in the exhibit and 134 pieces in the art-to-go marketplace. This is nearly double the size of a typical exhibit in this space—with work from 95 artists on display. \nAs safety guidelines changed\, this exhibit was extended to April 26; then\, ultimately\, on March 23 the gallery was closed to the public until further notice. At this time\, we rose to the challenge and posted the artwork in a Flickr album\, so the exhibit could still be viewed. \nIf you would like to purchase artwork\, please email the artwork title\, artist’s name\, or description to Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org or Technology@DelRayArtisans.org by June 10\, 2020. Purchased artwork will be available for pick up after the gallery reopens. \nView the Artwork \nMy Journey as Curator\nWhen I was developing the theme for this exhibit\, it was important to me to be able to include a variety of visual art and literary works by local artists. The idea was to be able to look at any piece of art and then let the story unfold. Everyone’s story is different; and there are many ways to express your story. \nStill I was overwhelmed by the response. This exhibit received nearly double the expected amount of entries\, and I needed to cull about a third of the work in order to have any hope of fitting it into the gallery. (There was a moment when I considered putting art on the ceiling!) \nWe had an outstanding team of volunteers at artwork receiving (when artists drop off accepted pieces) and helping arrange the display. I took the video below after the exhibit’s first round of hanging. Tweaks were made later and temporary artwork tags (seen hanging off the pieces in the video) were replaced by wall tags. \nThe week of artwork receiving and hanging is always the busiest for the curator. It’s such a reward to see everyone’s reaction to the collection at the opening reception—and the reception was crowded! The exhibit was well received\, and many buyers went home with great art from the art-to-go marketplace and reserved exhibit art for later pick up. \nThen COVID-19. As we learned more about the illness\, it became clear the gallery would be closing. How do we share the art safely? The internet to the rescue. \nThank you to all the artists who submitted photos of their work and to the volunteers who took additional photos. Together we were able to capture the essence of the exhibit through pictures\, so you can still take this imaginative journey with us. \n\n“Something’s Brewing” by Lesley Hall\, acrylic\, $337\, 8×11″\nIn the description for each artwork in the Flickr album\, you’ll find the artwork title\, artist\, media\, price\, and dimensions. If you would like to purchase an artwork\, please send the title\, description\, and/or artist’s name to Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org and Technology@DelRayArtisans.org to make arrangements. The artwork is available for purchase until June 10\, 2020\, and it will be available for pickup after the gallery reopens. \nWe will also be sharing some of the artists’ stories on social media\, so be sure to follow Del Ray Artisans on Instagram\, Facebook\, and Twitter. \nThank you the artists\, the volunteers\, and patrons for celebrating the arts. \n—Lesley Hall\, curator \nDel Ray Artisans’ gallery is located in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia\, but is closed until further notice (effective March 23\, 2020). Check DelRayArtisans.org for schedule updates. \n\nDel Ray Artisans\, founded in 1992\, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote art for the benefit of artists and the community. \nDel Ray Artisans (DRA) appreciates the continued support from the City of Alexandria\, Alexandria Commission for the Arts\, Virginia Commission for the Arts\, and National Endowment for the Arts. SUMMARY:Kondo vs. Chaos (2/7-3/1)
DESCRIPTION:Kondo vs. Chaos Art Exhibit\nFebruary 7 – March 1\, 2020\nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 7 from 7-9pm\n“Chaos: The Failure of Gravity” by Marcia L. Toepfer\nDel Ray Artisans presents an exciting new exhibit\, Kondo vs. Chaos\, featuring the work of local artists from February 7 to March 1\, 2020. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday\, February 7 from 7-9pm. Kondo vs. Chaos examines the divide between those inspired by Marie Kondo’s theory of keeping only those things that bring you joy and those who deal with chaos in their lives. \nMarie Kondo’s technique has brought simplicity and order to millions of devotees. Her principles have struck a chord with those overwhelmed by “stuff.” Some artists thrive on\, or at least live with\, chaos. They eschew the orderly static world and value dynamism. Some painters\, like the Dutch still life artists\, depicted “organized chaos.” They painted carefully chaotic scenes of overcrowded tables that overflowed with platters of flowers\, fowls and fruits. Picasso used chaos in his electrifying Guernica painting to show the horrors\, terrors and the randomness of war. \nSimplicity and chaos co-exist in the minds of many and in the world at large. This exhibit enables artists to externalize these concepts. \nThe Kondo vs. Chaos exhibit is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are: Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-9pm\, Saturdays 12-9pm\, and Sundays 12-6pm.
