SUMMARY:A Space Between (8/5-8/27)
DESCRIPTION:A Space Between Art Exhibit\nAugust 5-27\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nThe A Space Between art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery focuses on shadows\, negative space\, and often overlooked components of a scene. After two years separated by literally six feet—and many centuries of burying loved ones six feet under—the concept of space gave artists a chance to explore themes of isolation beyond the physical separations of our shared experience. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, August 5 between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork. Mark your calendar or set a reminder through Eventbrite. The artworks feature the shadows cast on subjects and the negative spaces revealing previously unseen images to help us visualize empathy and compassion for seeing the same thing differently. \nFitting beautifully into the space during the exhibit are several workshops\, including: \n\n“A Space to Clean” Soap-making Workshop on Saturday\, August 6 from 10am-1pm;\nEveryday Abstracts a la El Anatsui Workshop on Saturday\, August 13 from 6-8pm;\nQuilt Patch Mosaic Workshop on Tuesday\, August 16 from 6:30-8:30pm;\nPlaying with Resin Workshop on Sunday\, August 21 from 6-9pm; and\nVictorian Inspired Earrings Workshop on Saturday\, August 27 from 10am-12pm.\n\nRegister in advance for workshops at DelRayArtisans.org/workshops. \nThe A Space Between exhibit runs August 5-27\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. SUMMARY:Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash (5/6-5/28)
DESCRIPTION:Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School Art Exhibit\nMay 6–28\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nDrips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School is the May exhibit at Del Ray Artisans\, now celebrating 30 years as a non-profit fine arts organization in Alexandria. Both representational and abstract expressions of color\, line\, movement\, and sense of space are explored. \nThe exhibit was inspired by and celebrates the work of Morris Louis\, Gene Davis\, Jacob Kainen\, among other founders and followers of the Washington Color School\, a group of abstract painters who formed the movement in the 1950s and 1960s in rebellion against the art establishment of the day. The exhibit is curated by Kelly MacConomy. \nThe special guest juror is Washington area painter Barbara Januszkiewicz\, who studied with two well-known members of the Washington Color School\, Paul Reed and Hilda Thorpe. Barbara’s organic abstractions are transcendental\, bold and oftentimes colossal\, composed with a masterful brushstroke. \n“Januszkiewicz’s pictures can resemble Morris Louis’s florals\, yet her style is hotter\, with a hint of the abstract expressionism the Color School abandoned.” ~ The Washington Post \nIn addition to seeing the art exhibit\, join us for these special events and workshops: \n\nMaking Art Splash\, First Thursday Del Ray\, May 5 from 6-9pm.\nCome create a “Washington Color Rule-the-School” canvas in Colasanto Park outside the gallery and recreate a Gene Davis Stripe Sidewalk Painting.\nArt Exhibit Opening Day\, Friday\, May 6 from 12-9pm.\nJoin us on opening day for the widest selection of artwork. SUMMARY:Second Life (4/1-4/30)
DESCRIPTION:Second Life Art Exhibit\nApril 1–30\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nJoin us in April for the Second Life art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Many physical items we choose to remove from our lives can be sold/given/donated rather than going into overburdened landfills. It takes a conscious choice to acquire items from others rather than purchasing new ones. It also takes a little effort to offer something no longer needed to others rather than tossing it in the trash. The Second Life art exhibit brings into focus this thought-change concept\, from the artwork utilizing recycled materials to the workshops and events. \nThe featured artwork incorporates at least 50% recycled materials\, whether through items used or by taking an older piece and repurposing it into new art. Local artists also share how they recycle/reuse or share items no longer needed with the community. These sharing tidbits\, along with other facts and helpful information\, can be read while viewing the artwork. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, April 1 between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. Thank you to the sponsors of this exhibit: 6 Mijos Hand-Me-Downs\, T2MGMT\, and UpCycle. \nMultiple workshops and community events have been scheduled throughout the month so please check the online calendar for details and don’t forget about Earth Day on April 22. Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Each year\, more than 500 million people in 174 countries around the world participate. Event details and registration at DelRayArtisans.org/calendar \nThe Second Life art exhibit runs April 1 – 30\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. SUMMARY:Flora & Fauna (3/4-3/26)
DESCRIPTION:Flora & Fauna Art Exhibit\nMarch 4–26\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nThe Flora & Fauna art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery explores the interdependence of plants and animals\, combining art and environmental science. In recent years\, climate change and pollution have endangered the complex interactions between plants and animals. \nPollinators (birds\, bats\, bees\, butterflies\, beetles\, and other small mammals) are vital to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many rely on for food and shelter. Plants like almond trees\, berry bushes and flowers need pollinators to survive and reproduce. Large animals\, like giraffes and elephants\, rely on plants for food\, shelter\, and shade to protect them from the environment and predators. This art exhibit is focused on exploring and showing these connections. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, March 4\, between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork by local artists. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. \nHeld in conjunction with this exhibit\, register for the free online talk by Master Naturalist Chris Allgyer about Dragonflies and Damselflies of Virginia on Wednesday\, March 9 from 7-8pm. \nHave you always wanted to try your hand at floristry? Register now for the “Flowers Everywhere!” workshop on Saturday\, March 19 from 6:30-8:30pm. Instructor BWS Johnson will teach you how to level up grocery store arrangements and the difference in quality between wholesale and retail blooms\, plus you’ll get to bring home your masterpiece at the end of the workshop. \nEvent details and registration are at DelRayArtisans.org/workshops \nThe Flora & Fauna exhibit runs March 4–26\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. SUMMARY:DADA 2.0 (2/4-2/26)
DESCRIPTION:DADA 2.0 Exhibit\nFebruary 4–26\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nThe DADA 2.0 art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery features art by local artists that expresses absurdity and discontent through the lens of Dada. \nFor two years\, life in the U.S. has been bizarre\, confusing\, and at times downright disturbing. With the COVID-19 pandemic\, uptick in violence\, and social and political strife\, we have all been feeling off-kilter. In some ways\, this is reminiscent of the period during WWI\, where artists expressed their discontent towards violence\, war\, and nationalism. They did so by rejecting logic\, reason\, and decadence through an artistic expression of nonsense\, irrationality\, and unconventionalism. This movement became known as Dada or Dadaism\, and birthed through the idea that “dada”\, known as baby talk\, evokes childishness and absurdity. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, February 4 between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. \nThe DADA 2.0 exhibit runs February 4 – 26\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are Thursday 12-6pm\, Friday 12-9pm\, Saturday 12-6pm\, and Sunday 12-6pm (closed the last Sunday of the month). \nDel Ray Artisans has taken the ALX Promise pledge and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. SUMMARY:The Art of Nature (5/7-5/29)
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Nature Art Exhibit\nMay 7–29\, 2021\n“Magnolia Blossom at Dusk” by Cynthia Schoeppel\nView Online \nFor centuries\, nature has been an influential factor in the creation of artwork by artists. As more national and international discussion has centered around environmental concerns\, The Art of Nature is an art exhibit that reminds us of the gift Mother Earth has given us\, the beauty of nature. Artists in this exhibition share their interpretations of the natural world around us\, whether it be on the animals who make their homes in nature\, water that brings life to riverbeds or beaches and the vegetation\, plants and trees that add color to our world. \nReserve a ticket for half-hour viewing during extended hours on opening day: Friday\, May 7 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nAlso in May\, the following workshops are offered to Del Ray Artisans members and non-members in conjunction with the exhibit: \nZentangle and The Art of Nature\, Sunday\, May 9 from 1-3pm\nThe Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn\, relaxing\, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It increases focus\, creativity\, self-confidence and well-being. Marisela Rumberg is a Certified Zentangle Teacher and will guide you through this creative process. No previous experience in drawing or art is required. You can do it\, and you will love it! This workshop is offered via Zoom. \nOriental Brush Painting Nature\, Tuesday\, May 11 from 7-9pm\nLearn to paint a few basic strokes using ink and color on rice paper to create beautiful roses. In this oriental art technique you will load your brush in layers of color. When you put your brush to the paper the colors come out in the reverse order on the paper. This art form is “food for the soul”—it is active meditation that teaches you to use your chi (energy) to produce a freestyle\, beautiful piece of art. A picture of the subject will be emailed to all participants to follow during the class. You will set up your table to paint as the instructor guides you along with step-by-step directions and checks each participant’s progress from time to time. This workshop is offered via Zoom. \nWatercolor Painting Dewy Leaves\, Friday\, May 14 from 6-8pm\nLearn to use watercolor techniques such as wet in wet\, salt texture\, lifting\, and scratching to paint beautiful leaves. After painting leaves you will add realistic dew drops. They are so fun and easy you will soon be adding dew drops to all of your paintings! This workshop is offered via Zoom. \nPastel Painting Nature\, Sunday\, May 16 from 12:30-3:30pm\nHave fun learning pastel painting! Pastels are a fun and forgiving medium to use. Whether you are trying this medium for the first time or have experience you want to build on\, this workshop is for you. Through demonstrations and hands-on activities you will learn pastel painting techniques such as layering\, blending\, and mark-making to create beautiful nature scenes. You will also paint on different types of pastel paper including sanded paper. This workshop is offered in-person at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Limited to 8 students. Walk-ins are not allowed. \nRegister in advance for workshops at DelRayArtisans.org/workshops/ \nThe Art of Nature exhibit runs May 7–29\, 2021 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. SUMMARY:The COVID-19 HOPE Quilt Letters at Del Ray Artisans (10/6/2020 – 4/30/2021)
DESCRIPTION:HOPE Quilt Project Founder Diane Canney with Athena who painted a quilt panel; Photo courtesy of Kelly MacConomy\nDuring this historic moment\, the COVID-19 pandemic poses an unprecedented national crisis. The COVID-19 HOPE Quilt\, a grass roots community art project\, was launched by Diane Canney in response to national sentiments of grief and uncertainty. \nFor hundreds of years\, quilts have been part of the fabric of America. Mourning quilts were used to wrap infants and adults who died. Valor quilts honor veterans. They provide comfort\, remembrance\, and an historical record passed down for generations. Now when communal grieving is not possible\, the quilt panels help tell the story of those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Quilt panel contributions are being accepted from around the country to provide an outlet for grief and to document heroism in fighting the outbreak. \nMother and daughter creating a panel for the COVID-19 HOPE Quilt; Photo courtesy of Dawn Wyse Hurto\nOn November 21 Del Ray Artisans hosted the COVID-19 HOPE Quilt Founder Diane Canney in a paint-a-panel event outside the gallery. At sunset there was a candle and holiday lighting tribute honoring the frontline workers and the lives lost as well as marked by COVID-19. \nFrom now until January 19\, 2021 Del Ray Artisans nonprofit will receive a $5 donation for each artist member submitting an artisanal/handcrafted 10.5 x 10.5″ panel created to expressly honor a front-line worker or a person in memoriam. Artistic efforts representing HOPE for the future are also welcome and encouraged. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to create panels. You may drop off panel artwork at the gallery to be delivered to the HOPE Quilt for assembly. One of the first HOPE Quilts assembled this fall was on display during the paint-a-panel event. \nHigh-resolution digital image entries of three-dimensional or mixed-media work may also be uploaded to the website for transfer to fabric. All submissions will be on exhibit at the virtual gallery on the HOPE Quilt website (www.hopequilt.org). Fabric is available for creative use at the gallery but any fabric or fiber work is acceptable. Squares should be 10.5″ x 10.5″ (or 11″ x 11″) unless the artwork submitted is via photographic image\, then it should be formatted square. \nDel Ray Artisans members with the HOPE Letters installation; Photo courtesy of Sean Crumley\n“To go” materials are available in Del Ray Artisans entryway for anyone interested in working on a panel from home. Materials include properly sized fabric\, information about the project\, and an entry form. Finished panels may be returned to Del Ray Artisans during regular hours. In December the gallery is open the first three weekends on Fridays 6-9pm\, Saturdays & Sundays 11am-6pm. The gallery is closed December 21\, 2020 through January 6\, 2021. Starting January 7 the gallery is open on Thursdays & Fridays 12-6pm\, Saturdays 12-4pm. Alternatively\, you may mail your square to COVID19 HOPE QUILT PROJECT\, P.O Box 2610\, Purcellville\, VA 20134. \nThe 8-foot tall HOPE installation will remain on display outside Del Ray Artisans from October 6\, 2020 through April 30\, 2021. Many of the quilt panels were contributed by Del Ray Artisans members already\, including panels by Guy Jones\, Kelly MacConomy\, Scott MacConomy\, Terry Atkin Rowe\, Karen Schmitz\, Kathy Turner\, and Nina Tisara. \nFor more information\, contact Kelly MacConomy at outreach@delrayartisans.org.

SUMMARY:Unfinished/Finished (4/2-5/1)
DESCRIPTION:Unfinished/Finished Art Exhibit\nApril 2 – May 1\, 2021\n“Beauty and the Background” by Michael Green (left\, starting artist) and Eileen M. O’Brien (right\, finishing artist)\nView Online: Photo Album | Video Tour \nMany artists are notorious for having oodles of unfinished pieces hidden in their workspaces. In preparation for this exhibit\, unfinished works were given to different artists to complete. The Unfinished/Finished art exhibit showcases how these partnerships yield impressive finished artworks by local artists and high school students. Come explore the notion of when and how a work of art is “finished.” Note how the “start” inspired the “finished” piece. The overall concept offered a fun and safe way for artists to collaborate\, given the isolation we have all experienced due to the pandemic. Some of the artists paired up with an artist they knew\, while others signed up to be randomly paired with another artist. All artists brought a “started” piece to a “finished” state. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, April 2 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \nThree special events are held in conjunction with this exhibit: \nSpeed-Painting with Friends on Sunday\, March 14 between 3-6pm. In this free activity\, artists will use small canvas boards and take turns painting\, with each artist building on the prior artist’s work. No art experience necessary! The artwork created during this event will be displayed as part of Del Ray Artisans’ April exhibit\, Unfinished/Finished\, with proceeds supporting our non-profit arts organization. Due to pandemic restrictions\, registration is required. The event is currently full; check the registration page for last-minute openings. \nSketchy: How to Not Finish a Drawing Workshop on Saturday\, April 17 from 10am-Noon. Instructor Margaret Wohler will lead participants through a series of short\, fast\, drawing techniques that will enhance observational skills and focus on natural subjects. Participants will explore blind contour\, gesture\, and drawing-by-feel techniques along with meditative mindful drawing. The workshop is $25 for Del Ray Artisans members and $35 for non-members; plus drawing kits will be available for purchase for $25. This workshop will be held outside the gallery\, weather permitting. Register at sketchy-workshop.eventbrite.com \nMusic As Muse: Inspired Painting Workshop on Saturday\, April 24 from 2-4pm. Join us for a day of painting inspired by music led by Nancy Ramsey! We will create loose abstract acrylics\, painting along to music. We’ll create gestural movements in time to the music and create a record of them in paint. Working with three small canvases simultaneously\, we’ll do a rotation by removing one of the paintings and continuing to work on the remaining ones. Then we’ll pick a final painting to continue to work on. At the end\, we will have a series of three paintings in a progression of completion—some left more “unfinished” than others. This workshop will be held outside the gallery\, weather permitting. Register at music-as-muse.eventbrite.com \n.\nThe Unfinished/Finished art exhibit runs April 2 – May 1\, 2021 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. \nRegular gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-6pm\, and Saturdays 12-4pm. DESCRIPTION:Give Me Shelter Art Exhibit\nMarch 5 – 27\, 2021\n“Beach Shelter” by Pamela Day\nPhoto Album | Video Tour \nDuring the pandemic we all have learned what it means to shelter in place. Shelters are often structures\, yet sometimes just a state of where one is. For many it is a way to connect to our dwellings\, and for others it merely means finding refuge. Some people even choose to shelter from the facts of the COVID-19 virus and its spread. The current crisis has nearly 40 million American renters at risk of homelessness. A building\, box\, bench\, grate\, tent\, car—all places where humans shelter. Come see how local artists explore the concept of shelter in the Give Me Shelter art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, March 5 between 12-8pm. SUMMARY:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation (2/5-2/27)
DESCRIPTION:After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation Art Exhibit\nFebruary 5 – 27\, 2021\n“COVID Nighthawks reimagined” by Kelly MacConomy\nView Online \nThe great American painter Edward Hopper is famous for his canvases depicting the isolationist urban landscape as well as the sweeping solitude and unpopulated vacancy of the dunes of Cape Cod. His 1942 painting “Nighthawks” is Hopper’s most recognizable work. It is the visual narrative of a late-night New York City Greenwich Village diner scene\, bereft of a bustling business\, depicting three solo customers and a solemn soda jerk. \nIn the time of COVID-19\, quarantines\, shutdowns\, lockdowns\, orders of stay-at-home and safer-at-home have created a climate of extreme alienation and social deprivation. After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation is the member-only show at Del Ray Artisans opening Friday\, February 5 and on exhibit until Saturday\, February 27\, 2021. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing during the extended hours on opening day: Friday\, February 5 between 12-8pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. \nOpening Day Tickets \n“Homage Bar” by Gordon Thomas Frank\nArtists present their interpretations of what makes Hopper’s imagery quintessentially American: perseverance\, fortitude\, diversity\, and an egalitarian spirit in spite of adversity\, impoverishment\, and social injustice. As February advances into the new year and a new hope\, this show expresses the anthem of a new dawn: still we rise as one\, stronger together. \nThe After Edward Hopper: Themes of Solitude and Isolation exhibit is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Regular gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm\, Fridays 12-6pm\, and Saturdays 12-4pm. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. Galib\nView Online \nThe Hidden World art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans is a visual representation of things that are not readily visible in our ordinary lives—an exploration of microscopic organisms\, macro depictions of nature\, the metaphysical world\, emotions\, sounds\, and more. \nWe have all been affected – in one way or another – by an unseen and mysterious virus. It challenges us to look at our world more deeply and with new eyes. \nWhether it is the mysteries of the universe\, or just something in your own backyard\, the world is rife with surprises waiting to be uncovered. This amendment also led the way to more social equality and social reform. \nReserve a ticket now for a half-hour viewing on opening day: Friday\, November 6\, 2020 between 12-8pm. The gallery capacity is limited to 10 people at any one time in order to facilitate social distancing. Artwork explores the suffrage movement beginning in the 1850s\, the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s\, and the struggle that continues into present day. Progress is achieved in incremental steps\, and the movement towards total equality in America continues. The year 2020 marks an unprecedented time of turmoil in U.S. history. One hundred years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, and in the midst of a world-wide pandemic\, a presidential race\, social justice demonstrations\, and economic recession\, lift your voice and vote. \nWatch the Artist Awards presented online by Elizabeth Bennett-Parker\, Vice Mayor of Alexandria in both the high school and members categories. Special contributions towards these awards provided by the Kiwanis Club of Alexandria\, Community Partner McD Mateos\, and the curators. \nJoin us on Thursday\, November 12 at 7pm online for the Artist & Curator Talk led by Amy Kitchin Hower and Karen Schmitz to learn more about the exhibit and the award winners. FREE. Join us at anytime during the event\, but you must register by November 12 at 5pm.
