DESCRIPTION:Fun With One Art Exhibit\nMarch 3–April 1\, 2023\nOpening Reception: Friday\, March 3\, 7–9pm\nThe Fun With One art exhibit showcases 2D and 3D monochromatic artwork by Del Ray Artisans members—revealing a fascinating variety even using only one color. Join us for the opening reception on Friday\, March 3 between 7-9pm to meet the curators and artists. The raffle benefits Del Ray Artisans 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the winner will be drawn during the reception. \nThe artists awards are juried by Robin Croft\, an artist from Manassas\, VA whose works include painting and sculpture. Many of his sculptures are created from found materials in nature\, created to be left outdoors\, and not glued or nailed together in any way so the natural materials can then be redistributed by the natural elements of wind and sea water. He has taught a variety of courses in drawing\, painting\, and collage at the Lorton Workhouse Art Center. View Robin’s art on Instagram @shipwreckartist. \nIn the spirit of the color theme\, curator Rusty Lynn is facilitating Del Ray Artisans’ Creative Book Club on Saturday\, February 11 from 10am-12pm with a discussion of “The Secret Lives of Color” by Kassia St. Clair. This book is organized around the color groups and full of very interesting research about all the colors imaginable. Book club is a drop-in program. SUMMARY:The Unseen at Del Ray Artisans Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Unseen Art Exhibit\nFebruary 3–25\, 2023\nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 3 from 7–9pm\nJoin us for the opening reception of The Unseen art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans on Friday\, February 3 between 7-9pm to meet the curator\, Peter Michaels\, and the artists. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. This exhibit reveals what we typically cannot see. \nJuried by renowned scientist and artist Michal Gavish\, who recently returned from a residency in Seoul and a one-person show in New York City. She received her MFA in Painting and previously earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry. The Unseen piggybacks off Dr. Gavish’s work with microscopic structures in her art. \nCome explore the hidden\, under the surface\, microscopic\, imagined\, or dreamt that make life so much richer. Through the exhibit local artists take us to myriad places—in their minds\, their dreams\, their dives\, their experiments\, their hopes\, and their fears.  Is the work of art what the artist intended or what you perceive…or both?  After all\, as philosopher Roland Barthes exclaimed in his 1967 seminal essay “The Death of the Author\,” there isn’t an ultimate meaning.  Come experience The Unseen for yourself! \nPlus check out our upcoming programs—including the free\, online talks: The Unseen World of Extreme Diving on Wednesday\, February 1 from 7-8pm and Women with ADHD on Tuesday\, February 21 from 7-8pm held in conjunction with the exhibit. \nWhile visiting the gallery\, also note the two beautiful garden statues of the Chinese Buddhist Deities of Compassion (Guan Yin) and Longevity (Shou Lao) and purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win them. The raffle benefits Del Ray Artisans 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the winner will be drawn during the Fun With One exhibit reception on March 3 between 7-9pm. \nThe Unseen exhibit runs February 3–25\, 2023 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. SUMMARY:Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash (5/6-5/28)
DESCRIPTION:Drips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School Art Exhibit\nMay 6–28\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nDrips\, Lines\, Splatters\, and Splash: A Celebration of the Washington Color School is the May exhibit at Del Ray Artisans\, now celebrating 30 years as a non-profit fine arts organization in Alexandria. Both representational and abstract expressions of color\, line\, movement\, and sense of space are explored. \nThe exhibit was inspired by and celebrates the work of Morris Louis\, Gene Davis\, Jacob Kainen\, among other founders and followers of the Washington Color School\, a group of abstract painters who formed the movement in the 1950s and 1960s in rebellion against the art establishment of the day. The exhibit is curated by Kelly MacConomy. \nThe special guest juror is Washington area painter Barbara Januszkiewicz\, who studied with two well-known members of the Washington Color School\, Paul Reed and Hilda Thorpe. Barbara’s organic abstractions are transcendental\, bold and oftentimes colossal\, composed with a masterful brushstroke. \n“Januszkiewicz’s pictures can resemble Morris Louis’s florals\, yet her style is hotter\, with a hint of the abstract expressionism the Color School abandoned.” ~ The Washington Post \nIn addition to seeing the art exhibit\, join us for these special events and workshops: \n\nMaking Art Splash\, First Thursday Del Ray\, May 5 from 6-9pm.\nCome create a “Washington Color Rule-the-School” canvas in Colasanto Park outside the gallery and recreate a Gene Davis Stripe Sidewalk Painting.\nArt Exhibit Opening Day\, Friday\, May 6 from 12-9pm.\nJoin us on opening day for the widest selection of artwork. SUMMARY:Second Life (4/1-4/30)
DESCRIPTION:Second Life Art Exhibit\nApril 1–30\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nJoin us in April for the Second Life art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Many physical items we choose to remove from our lives can be sold/given/donated rather than going into overburdened landfills. It takes a conscious choice to acquire items from others rather than purchasing new ones. It also takes a little effort to offer something no longer needed to others rather than tossing it in the trash. The Second Life art exhibit brings into focus this thought-change concept\, from the artwork utilizing recycled materials to the workshops and events. \nThe featured artwork incorporates at least 50% recycled materials\, whether through items used or by taking an older piece and repurposing it into new art. Local artists also share how they recycle/reuse or share items no longer needed with the community. These sharing tidbits\, along with other facts and helpful information\, can be read while viewing the artwork. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, April 1 between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. Thank you to the sponsors of this exhibit: 6 Mijos Hand-Me-Downs\, T2MGMT\, and UpCycle. \nMultiple workshops and community events have been scheduled throughout the month so please check the online calendar for details and don’t forget about Earth Day on April 22. Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Each year\, more than 500 million people in 174 countries around the world participate. Event details and registration at DelRayArtisans.org/calendar \nThe Second Life art exhibit runs April 1 – 30\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are First Thursday (Apr-Sept) 12-9pm\, Thursday 12-6pm\, Friday 12-9pm\, Saturday 12-6pm\, and Sunday 12-6pm (closed on Sunday\, May 1\, 2022). \nDel Ray Artisans has taken the ALX Promise pledge and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. SUMMARY:Flora & Fauna (3/4-3/26)
DESCRIPTION:Flora & Fauna Art Exhibit\nMarch 4–26\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nThe Flora & Fauna art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery explores the interdependence of plants and animals\, combining art and environmental science. In recent years\, climate change and pollution have endangered the complex interactions between plants and animals. \nPollinators (birds\, bats\, bees\, butterflies\, beetles\, and other small mammals) are vital to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many rely on for food and shelter. Plants like almond trees\, berry bushes and flowers need pollinators to survive and reproduce. Large animals\, like giraffes and elephants\, rely on plants for food\, shelter\, and shade to protect them from the environment and predators. This art exhibit is focused on exploring and showing these connections. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, March 4\, between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork by local artists. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. \nHeld in conjunction with this exhibit\, register for the free online talk by Master Naturalist Chris Allgyer about Dragonflies and Damselflies of Virginia on Wednesday\, March 9 from 7-8pm. \nHave you always wanted to try your hand at floristry? Register now for the “Flowers Everywhere!” workshop on Saturday\, March 19 from 6:30-8:30pm. Instructor BWS Johnson will teach you how to level up grocery store arrangements and the difference in quality between wholesale and retail blooms\, plus you’ll get to bring home your masterpiece at the end of the workshop. \nEvent details and registration are at DelRayArtisans.org/workshops \nThe Flora & Fauna exhibit runs March 4–26\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. SUMMARY:DADA 2.0 (2/4-2/26)
DESCRIPTION:DADA 2.0 Exhibit\nFebruary 4–26\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nThe DADA 2.0 art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery features art by local artists that expresses absurdity and discontent through the lens of Dada. \nFor two years\, life in the U.S. has been bizarre\, confusing\, and at times downright disturbing. With the COVID-19 pandemic\, uptick in violence\, and social and political strife\, we have all been feeling off-kilter. In some ways\, this is reminiscent of the period during WWI\, where artists expressed their discontent towards violence\, war\, and nationalism. They did so by rejecting logic\, reason\, and decadence through an artistic expression of nonsense\, irrationality\, and unconventionalism. This movement became known as Dada or Dadaism\, and birthed through the idea that “dada”\, known as baby talk\, evokes childishness and absurdity. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, February 4 between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. \nThe DADA 2.0 exhibit runs February 4 – 26\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301.
