SUMMARY:Happy 275th Anniversary to the City of Alexandria #ALX275 installation (6/7/2024 – 10/28/2024)
DESCRIPTION:The “Happy 275th Anniversary to the City of Alexandria #ALX275” installation is courtesy of Del Ray Artisans nonprofit. Take a photo with the installation\, share on social media and tag:\n#ALX275 #CityPride #DelRayArtisans \nThe installation is approximately 40 feet wide by 7 feet tall and was created using natural and synthetic yarn\, fabric trim\, mylar\, plastic\, and vinyl. The installation is on display outside Del Ray Artisans gallery from June 7 through October 28\, 2024. The original end date was September 1\, but it was extended due to positive community feedback and a material connection to the Fascinating Fiber\, Alluring Fabric art exhibit inside Del Ray Artisans gallery from September 6–28\, 2024. \nRiver Towers Condominium Association donated knitted and crocheted pieces from a yarn bomb installation at the condominium complex (March-April 2024) to Del Ray Artisans. The individual pieces were created by Iva Beatty\, Melinda Croft\, Nancy Mendez\, Anne St. Jacques\, and Leah Sturgis. Most of the yarn came from UpCycle Creative Reuse Center. \nThe pieces were reformed into “candles” and installed outside Del Ray Artisans gallery by Dawn Wyse Hurto\, Sophia Jones\, Adelyn Doyle\, and Kurt Peterson. The new concept was completed with the addition of a banner wishing a happy 275th anniversary to the City of Alexandria. The source materials for the banner include a photograph by Engin Akyurt (via Unsplash)\, and fonts KG A Little Swag by Kimberly Geswein and Mix Stitch by Mix Fonts (via dafont.com). \nDel Ray Artisans\, founded in 1992\, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote art for the benefit of artists and the community. \nMore information on the City of Alexandria’s 275th Anniversary is available at alexandriava.gov/ALX275. \nYarn bomb installation at River Towers Condominium (April 2024)\n#ALX275 installation at Del Ray Artisans (May 2024\, in progress)\n#ALX275 installation at Del Ray Artisans (June 2024)

DESCRIPTION:Artificial or Intelligence? Art Exhibit\nOctober 4–26\, 2024\nOpening Reception: Friday\, October 4 from 7–9pm\n“Sum of its parts?” by Nicole Mahoney\n \nTalk about artificial intelligence\, or AI\, abounds. Participate in our conversation and decide for yourself whether machine learning feels artificial or intelligent at the present moment. All artwork is available for sale. \nAlso mark your calendar for the following special program held in conjunction with the exhibit: \nAI & Artists: A Discussion On What Artists Should Know\nSaturday\, October 19\, 6:30-8pm @ Torpedo Factory Art Center\, Grand Hall (105 N. SUMMARY:All About Love at Del Ray Artisans Gallery
DESCRIPTION:All About Love Art Exhibit\nJune 7–30\, 2024\nOpening Reception: Friday\, June 7 from 7–9pm\n“All About Love” by TJ Feeley\nStarting on Friday\, June 7\, come celebrate visual depictions of love at the All About Love exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery. In this exhibit\, local artists explore the concept of love in all of its forms: romantic love\, love for one’s parents and siblings\, love of pets\, young love\, enduring couples\, strong friendships\, soulmates\, and more. \nWhile the ancient Greeks identified eight major types of love (erotic\, affectionate\, familial\, playful\, enduring\, obsessive\, unconditional\, and self-compassionate)\, humans have an infinite number of ways to love. Love is one of the most important forces in the world—having been the theme of countless works of literature\, film\, architecture\, and even war (i.e.\, Helen of Troy). As Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. noted “…Hate cannot drive out hate\, only love can do that.” Come see how artists portray what love means to them using a variety of media. All the artwork is available for sale. \nJoin us for the opening reception on Friday\, June 7 between 7-9pm to meet curator TJ Feeley and the artists. A gifted\, accomplished architect and photographer\, Marlin left his mark upon the city in ways seen and unseen. \n“Whrrr When It Stood Still…” by Marlin Lord\nAs an architect\, he’s best known for the straightening of the Monroe Avenue Bridge along Route 1\, a project resulting in the corollary expansion of parkland at Simpson Field. With Kathryn by his side\, a tandem partner in all things\, there was always time to give\, to give back\, and give all. DESCRIPTION:Curses! Foiled Again! The Art of Swords and Sorcery Art Exhibit\nOctober 6–28\, 2023\nOpening Reception: Friday\, October 6 from 7–9pm\nReception Video | Photo Album \nCome see daring swordswomen\, haggard bog witches\, bevies of mythical beasts\, and many more artist interpretations of the fantastic! Fantasy costumes encouraged! Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. \nIn addition\, join us for programs affiliated with the exhibit: \n\nSaturday\, September 30\, choose 9:45am-10:45am or 11am-12pm – Sword Making for Kids Workshop – Dani and Erica guide small warriors to make foam swords and pool noodle staves. These ‘swords’ can then be used during the CHALLENGE ROYALE! This one-hour workshop is for kids 12 and under. Kids under 7 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Register by September 25.\nSaturday\, Oct 7\, 10am-12pm – CHALLENGE ROYALE: Outdoor Costume Party and Duel – Come in costume with a pool noodle ‘sword’ to the Curses! Foiled Again! The Art of Swords and Sorcery CHALLENGE ROYALE at Del Ray Artisans during Art on the Avenue. Meet at 10am in front of the gallery and present your pool noodle ‘sword’ for inspection and registration. The challenge begins at 11am on the playing fields of the Mount Vernon Rec Center next to the gallery. When challenged by another costumed participant\, you may yield or duel! Inflatable ‘swords’ are also allowed. NO other foam\, wood\, rubber or metal allowed. This is a KID-FRIENDLY event for ages 6+.\nWednesday and Thursday\, October 11 and 12\, 6pm-9pm – What’s In The Box? – In this two-day\, novice-level workshop you will create your own hinged lid box using book board\, book cloth\, decorative papers\, and archival glue. Register by October 10.\nSunday\, October 15\, 10am-1pm – Fencing Demonstration & Mini Lessons – Come see free fencing demonstrations by Mark and Erica of Fairfax Fencers in the tennis courts behind the gallery\, and register in advance for a free 30-minute mini lesson for beginners (children ages 6+ and adults). A 2-day beadwork workshop – Create your own dragon’s eye pendant or brooch by combining bead embroidery and peyote stitch bead weaving in this two-day\, intermediate-level beadwork workshop. Sign up early\, and the instructor will personalize the supply kit with your favorite colors—allowing you to make the perfect dragon! Register by October 15.\nSunday\, October 22\, 11am-1pm – Witches’ Brew: The Art of Healing Herbs – Learn about the history of spell jars (also known as witch bottles) and create your own to take home! Register by October 18.\nThursday\, October 26\, 6pm-9pm – Soapy Sorcery – Join instructor Suzan Shumate in a fantasy-themed soapmaking workshop. Using the melt and pour technique\, you can create beautiful dragon eggs\, unicorns\, mermaids\, fairies\, ghosts\, and other spellbinding soaps.
