The monthly street festival takes place on Thursday\, May 4 from 6 p.m. to dusk along Mount Vernon Avenue. Bring your best four-legged friend out to the Avenue for a variety of canine-themed activities for dogs (and their humans!). Participants are encouraged to bring dry and wet food for dogs and cats for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. Donations will be collected at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square\, located at Mt. SUMMARY:Celebrate the life of Marlin G. Lord\, Founding Member and Legend
DESCRIPTION:Revered and beloved Del Ray Artisans Board Emeritus and Founding Member Marlin G. Lord passed away on Tuesday\, October 18\, 2022. Marlin was 84 years old. Join us on Sunday\, November 13 from 6-8pm at Del Ray Artisans gallery to celebrate Marlin’s life. \nA gifted\, accomplished architect and photographer\, Marlin left his mark upon the city in ways seen and unseen. As a former President of the Del Ray Citizens Association as well as past Treasurer\, Community/Business Liaison\, and Facilities Director of Del Ray Artisans\, where he was a founding member along with his loving and longtime dedicated partner Kathryn A. Brown\, Marlin left an indelible mark on our community. \nYou cannot think of Marlin without Kathryn or Kathryn without Marlin. Together their civic activism\, community service\, philanthropic pursuits\, and arts advocacy have made DRA and the ever eclectic yet prosperous Del Ray into what we know today. Their altruistic endeavors have cast a ripple effect upon making Alexandria better and better for over three decades—earning them Alexandria Living Legend induction in 2013. \nBorn in Michigan and raised in Minnesota\, Marlin earned degrees in architecture in 1960 and 1962. He’s best known professionally for the straightening of the Monroe Avenue Bridge along Route 1\, a project resulting in the corollary expansion of parkland at Simpson Field. Marlin also was integral in the redevelopment design of Potomac Yard. \nMarlin’s curricula vitae of civic engagement reads on and on: the Alexandria Arts Forum; the Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission\, where he served for 20 years\, seven as Chairman; the Chinquapin Organic Gardens; King Street Gardens Park Foundation and countless City committees and task forces. With Kathryn by his side\, a tandem partner in all things\, there was always time to give\, to give back\, and give all. DESCRIPTION:Along Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray on Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 10am-5pm\, you’ll find: Art on the Avenue\, a multicultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in Alexandria\, Virginia. There will be entertainment for all ages\, art activities\, food\, and artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. Art on the Avenue is sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association. \nArtists at Work\nDirectly in front of the gallery\, Del Ray Artisans present artist demonstrations\, sell upcycled tote bags (made from exhibit banners) and 2023 wall calendars (featuring art from local artists and community event dates)\, and share information about our nonprofit arts organization (booths W-192 and W-193). DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Art on the Avenue has been rescheduled to Saturday\, November 12 due to the wind and rain associated with Hurricane Ian. \nAlong Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray on Saturday\, October 1\, 2022 from 10am-6pm\, you’ll find: Art on the Avenue\, a multicultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in Alexandria\, Virginia. There will be entertainment for all ages\, art activities\, food\, and artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. Art on the Avenue is sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association. \nArtists at Work\nDirectly in front of the gallery during Art on the Avenue\, Del Ray Artisans will present artist demonstrations\, sell upcycled tote bags made from exhibit banners\, and share information about our nonprofit organization (booths W-192 and W-193). Come visit us and see these demos: \n\n10am-Noon – Cynthia Schoeppel\, Mixed media\nNoon-2pm – Ron Reel\, Photography\n2-4pm – Cheryl Neway\, Tie-Dye and fiber\n4-6pm – Erica Hughes\, Performance art\n\nSupport Del Ray Artisans Members\, Local Artists\nMany Del Ray Artisans members are juried into Art on the Avenue. DESCRIPTION:Unmask Your Inner Superhero – Del Ray Artisans gallery will be open late! \nSee The Naked and the Newt exhibit; PLUS come dressed as a SUPERHERO (especially reptile- or amphibian- themed ones) for the silly photo shoot outside the gallery at 7pm (June 3 and June 12)! \nDon’t have a superhero cape? There will be a “Make a Cape” table outside for kids from 6-9pm on June 12! \n\nDel Ray celebrates  First Thursday\, a Del Ray community event along Mount Vernon Avenue from 6-9pm on the first Thursday of the month (April through September). \nVisit Del Ray Artisans gallery for a sneak peek of the next art exhibit\, then order dinner and drinks for carryout from one of Del Ray’s local restaurants\, and stroll the neighborhood! \nThe 2021 First Thursday themes are: \n\nApril 1 – Petal Porch Party – This theme is also part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival with Del Ray as one of the stops!\nMay 6 – Dog Days in Del Ray – The gallery will be open until 9pm! Come get a sneak peek of The Art in Nature exhibit.\nRescheduled to June 10 and rescheduled again to June 12 due to weather – Unmask Your Inner Superhero – The gallery will be open until 8pm on June 10th and 9pm on June 12th. This theme is also part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival with Del Ray as one of the stops! \nBe a hero to kids in need: Donate colored pencils (12-pack)\, crayons (24-pack)\, and reusable water bottles (new\, kid-friendly\, BPA-free sport/water bottles) for Mount Vernon Community School & Maury Elementary School’s Blessings in a Backpack program. On Thursday\, April 1\, plastic bins will be placed along Mount Vernon Avenue by 4pm. Blessings in a Backpack works to provides food staples to Mount Vernon Community School and Maury Elementary School children in need.
