SUMMARY:Second Life (4/1-4/30)
DESCRIPTION:Second Life Art Exhibit\nApril 1–30\, 2022\nPhoto Album \nJoin us in April for the Second Life art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Many physical items we choose to remove from our lives can be sold/given/donated rather than going into overburdened landfills. It takes a conscious choice to acquire items from others rather than purchasing new ones. It also takes a little effort to offer something no longer needed to others rather than tossing it in the trash. The Second Life art exhibit brings into focus this thought-change concept\, from the artwork utilizing recycled materials to the workshops and events. \nThe featured artwork incorporates at least 50% recycled materials\, whether through items used or by taking an older piece and repurposing it into new art. Local artists also share how they recycle/reuse or share items no longer needed with the community. These sharing tidbits\, along with other facts and helpful information\, can be read while viewing the artwork. \nJoin us on opening day\, Friday\, April 1 between 12-9pm for the widest selection of artwork. Mark your calendar now or set a reminder through Eventbrite. Thank you to the sponsors of this exhibit: 6 Mijos Hand-Me-Downs\, T2MGMT\, and UpCycle. \nMultiple workshops and community events have been scheduled throughout the month so please check the online calendar for details and don’t forget about Earth Day on April 22. Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Each year\, more than 500 million people in 174 countries around the world participate. Event details and registration at DelRayArtisans.org/calendar \nThe Second Life art exhibit runs April 1 – 30\, 2022 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are First Thursday (Apr-Sept) 12-9pm\, Thursday 12-6pm\, Friday 12-9pm\, Saturday 12-6pm\, and Sunday 12-6pm (closed on Sunday\, May 1\, 2022). \nDel Ray Artisans has taken the ALX Promise pledge and is committed to the health and safety of our visitors. Face masks must be worn by all while visiting the gallery. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. \nFor more information\, contact the curators Tracy Wilkerson (recycledworks@yahoo.com) and Esperanza Barajas (eramosbarajas@gmail.com) or Director of Curating Kelly Postula (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org). \n\nArtwork credit: “Sparklies” by Tracy Wilkerson

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Intro to Moth Pinning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been cancelled. \nInstructor: Justin ToroneDate: Sunday\, April 10\, 2022 from 6-8:30pmCost: $35 for Del Ray Artisans members and $50 for non-members\, plus a $25 supply feeClass size: 10-14 participants(Register by midnight on April 1) \nLearn the art of insect pinning! This is a hands-on class by Rest in Pieces owner Justin Torone. Learn how to rehydrate\, spread\, and pin your very own Day Flying Moth (Alcides orontes). This is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge on this meticulous craft. \nAll necessary supplies will be provided. You will leave at the end of the class with your own pinned specimen. Class end times are approximate. Specimens will require a drying period prior to mounting them either in the frame provided by us\, or the vessel of your choosing. Instructions on finishing your specimen will be given at the end of the class and in a take home sheet. \nParticipants may bring collage materials if desired for their backgrounds. From 6-6:30pm participants may prepare a collage background for their moths. This self-directed time is optional. The insect pinning instruction begins at 6:30pm. \nAges 16+ or 12+ accompanied by an adult. Face masks and proof of vaccination are required for this workshop and will be reviewed by the instructor. \nRegister Now \nNOTE FROM THE INSTRUCTOR: Our insects are farm raised. In order to maintain populations\, females are brought in from the wild to lay their eggs inside a lofty enclosed habitat. This process keeps her and her babies safe from disease\, parasites and predators. A female butterfly is able to lay thousands of eggs and the chance of survival dramatically increases by giving them a safe space to do so! Once they reach adulthood\, most of them are released back into the wild to supplement the native populations. When the time comes and the insect passes\, most will be used to further DNA\, evolution\, mutation and disease studies. The others will be sold to museums\, universities and stores like us. The money generated from these specimens help keep the operations running\, so you can feel good about your purchase! \n \n\nView other upcoming workshops\, information about the facility and policies on the Upcoming Workshops page.
