SUMMARY:Expanding the Common Ground: Voices of the Global Majority (10/1-10/30)
DESCRIPTION:Expanding the Common Ground: Voices of the Global Majority Art Exhibit\nOctober 1 – 30\, 2021\n“Skin Deep: Underneath Don’t We All Look the Same” by Amy Kitchin\nPhoto Album \nThe Expanding the Common Ground: Voices of the Global Majority art exhibit explores what makes us one\, seeks the common ground among us\, and examines what it means to heal the divides. The world has been designed by institutions\, and terms like people of color or minorities serve to divide us and create white vs. non-white or us vs. them paradigms. Local artists and high school students present artworks examining all facets of our diversity and celebrating our unity. \nReserve a ticket for a half-hour viewing on opening day: Friday\, October 1 between 12-9pm. Opening day tickets are not required\, but ticket holders have priority entry. \nPlus join us for the “Storytelling in Fabric” virtual Artist Talk on Sunday\, October 10 at 2-3pm. Fabric artist Sheryl Sims will share her art quilts that illustrate her family’s heritage of black and white\, enslaved and free. (View the Recording) \nGallery hours are Thursday 12-6pm\, Friday 12-9pm\, Saturday 12-6pm\, and Sunday 12-6pm (closed the last Sunday of the month). Del Ray Artisans is ALX Promise certified and committed to the health and safety of our visitors. Face masks must be worn by all while visiting the gallery. \nThe exhibit runs October 1 – 30\, 2021 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center\, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue\, Alexandria\, Virginia 22301. The gallery is free\, open to the public\, and accessible. \nFor more information\, contact the curators Amy Kitchin (alkitchin.dc@gmail.com)\, Beth Richardson (bethlyone@aol.com)\, and Mathew Heggem (matheggem@gmail.com) or Director of Curating Kelly Postula (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org). \n\n \n\nArtwork credit: (TOP) “Connected Worlds” by Beth Richardson

SUMMARY:Storytelling in Fabric: Artist Talk by Sheryl Sims
DESCRIPTION:Art quilt by Sheryl Sims\nView Recording \nArtist: Sheryl Sims\nDate/Time: Sunday\, October 10 from 2-3pm\nAudience size: 4-30 participants\n(Register by Sunday\, October 10 at 11am) \nSheryl Sims’ quilts tell the story of her heritage\, a family background entwining black and white\, free and enslaved.  When the pandemic caused Sheryl to spend more time at home\, she found a creative outlet combining art quilting with research into her ancestry. Freed from the restrictions of traditional quilting\, Sheryl improvised her own applique style to create striking art quilts. Join us online as Sheryl shares her quilts and the stories behind them. \nThe Storytelling in Fabric artist talk is offered in conjunction with the Expanding the Common Ground: Voices of the Global Majority art exhibit and is offered for FREE. Donations to support Del Ray Artisans non-profit arts organization are very much appreciated. \nThe artist talk will be online through the Zoom platform. Registered participants will be sent the connection information via email two days before the talk and again one hour before the talk. You may attend on a computer\, tablet\, or smartphone.
