Exhibit Dates: September 6–29, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, September 6 from 7-9pm
Del Ray Artisans presents High Note, an art exhibit exploring the connection between music and the mind. Please join us at the opening reception on Friday, September 6 from 7-9pm to enjoy live music by guitarist Bill Cabrera, meet the artists, and congratulate the award winners.
Music has a profound influence on us, shaping the way we feel and think. Whether symphonies make your spirit soar or doo wops do it for you, a familiar melody can unleash powerful memories, transporting us in space and time. Come see this exhibit to experience how artists captured the high notes from the soundtrack of their lives.
The juror is Britt Conley, a visual soundscape artist who paints and draws music, its physics, sound shapes, and concepts from her studio at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia.
Special workshops held in conjunction with this exhibit include:
- Rhythmic Strokes Workshop on Sunday, Sept 8 from 1-4pm. Under the influence of music, experiment with various tools to create gestural lines, rhythmic strokes and expressive marks—capturing the essence of musical elements in your own individual interpretation. Instructor: Jenny Nicholson. (Register by Sept 6)
. - Fun with Musical Glass Decals Workshop on Saturday, Sept 14 from 12-3pm (Part 1) and Thursday, Sept 19 from 7-9pm (Part 2). Celebrate music by creating your own glass bowl or plate using glass decals! The gold, silver, black, blue, and sepia decals are of different musical instruments and musical notes. Learn how to design an arrangement, apply the decals, and what happens to them in the kiln! Instructor: Betsy Mead. (Register by Sept 10)
. - Music-themed Paper Collage Workshop on Sunday, Sept 15 from 1-3:30pm. Express your musical self as you create a rhythmic collage that blends colorful papers with sheet music and other musical imagery. Learn about collage materials, techniques and design concepts. Explore the texture and layering possibilities of this fun art medium. Instructor: Susan Farrer. (Register by Sept 12)
. - Sound Meditation with Dante on Saturday, Sept 21 from 10-11:30am. Sound healing is the use of tuned, deep vibrational instruments to balance dissonant frequencies in the body and bring them into harmony. Using crystal and Tibetan bowls, Dante will lead a soothing meditation suitable for all who seek a mentally clear, emotionally calm, and stable state. Instructor: Dante Baker. (Register by Sept 18)
Register for workshops in advance at www.DelRayArtisans.org/workshops or at the gallery.
