Speak Your Mind (5/5-5/28) @ Del Ray Artisans Gallery
May 28 all-day
Cassandra by Kathy Turner

Exhibit Dates:  May 5-28, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, May 5 from 7-9pm

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words.” The Speak Your Mind art exhibit celebrates the relationship between art and the human mind as a form of nonverbal communication. For some, visual arts are a platform for advocacy, a way to raise awareness of a social cause, or to express a political message. Art is a means of self-expression when it portrays emotions, thoughts, or a state of mind. For others, the process of making art is itself a form of therapy to improve mental health or as an exercise in mindfulness. This show coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month (May).

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 5 from 7-9pm to meet the curators and some of the artists and enjoy the unveiling of the exhibit.

Play Synopsis: The play welcomes you to Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal, Patsy Cline never dies, and the residents never stop listening to OKKK, the local radio station. In this production, two actors again create the memorable population of Tuna, including a few hippies who have returned to their roots for their high school reunion. Is Tuna ready for them? Join the wild ride of quick changes and comedic characterizations.

The “fish art” Exhibit: The artworks for raffle are by Del Ray Artisans members: Linda Elliff, Theresa Kulstad, Karen Schmitz, Guy Jones, John Bordner and Angela Calos. Purchase raffle tickets at the reception and drop them in the fish bowl in front of the art piece you hope to win. The raffle drawing will be at the conclusion of the Champagne Celebration Intermission. Raffle tickets are $5 for one ticket or $20 for five tickets.

Cioppini by John Bordner
1. Cioppini, via pyrography and ink, John Bordner’s artful hands gave life to these creatures in the chair. Fashion and function meet. John must have been hungry for San Fran’s signature seafood dish when he created the art piece.
Fish Out of Water by Guy G Jones
2. Guy G. Jones created Fish Out of Water, another, yet again, one of his stunning signature pen and ink creations that draw you into the images. His delicate strokes are fascinating and beautiful.
Fins by Theresa Kulstad
3. Fins, Theresa Kulstad’s acrylic on canvas yellowfin tuna swam over bringing a bit of whim and vibrant shots of color. A great catch for any fisherman, beachcomber or sushi-lover. Don’t let this be the one that got away!
Plated Purchased Perch by Linda Elliff
4. Plated Purchased Perch is Linda Elliff’s culinary-influenced mixed media artwork of a ’credit card’ fish served on an vintage platter. The gils and fins are fashioned from copper wire mesh fabric.
Artwork by Karen Schmitz
5. Karen Schmitz has created another fine mixed media on wood commenting on the importance of environmental protection and appreciation for clean water. This acrylic palate makes a beautiful statement as you linger longer to ponder into the deeper meaning of the arts and ecology.
Flit by Angela Calos
6. Flit floats in the seagrass. This mixed media on slate piece that Angela Calos created captures one of her favorite ocean creatures. Angela remains amazed at how seemingly delicate, yet mighty, seahorses are.
Net the Marlins Washington Nationals Fan Basket from John Elliff
7. Net the Marlins. Thanks to the generosity of John Elliff, you can buy your chances at the Washington Nationals Fan Basket that is chock-full of fun, including 2 tickets to the August 8, Washington Nationals v. Miami Marlins evening game, a Nats tote bag, an XL Nats t-shirt, a Nats hat, other Nats memorabilia and ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ treats.
