A New Beginning art exhibit at the Veterinary Clinics of America Alexandria Animal Hospital (VCA Alexandria) presents Del Ray Artisans members’ interpretations of a new start or starting over. The exhibit is a part of Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls (GWW) program in partnership with VCA Alexandria and features paintings, photography, and mixed media works of art to delight and awe.

The artwork will be displayed on the walls of the VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital January 29-May 21, 2017. Patrons may view the artwork at VCA Alexandria during regular business hours and at the discretion of hospital staff.

All artwork is available for purchase through Del Ray Artisans. Artists are donating 20% of the purchase price of sold pieces in an equal split between Del Ray Artisans and the VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital’s charity of choice, Veterans Moving Forward. Veteran’s Moving Forward helps veterans lead more productive lives through partnerships with trained assistance animals. Del Ray Artisans and Veterans Moving Forward are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital is located at 2660 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. VCA Alexandria staff can be reached by phone at 703-751-2022 or 703-823-3601. Del Ray Artisans’ volunteer GWW coordinator, Eileen O’Brien, may be reached at GWW@DelRayArtisans.org.

Our membership meeting on Tuesday, May 23 at 7pm is also our annual “member benefit” meeting, at which Del Ray Artisans offers a program of interest to our membership. This year we have engaged well-known local artist and teacher, Lisa Semerad, to give a talk, “The Criteria of Quality: A Juror’s Perspective.” Ms. Semerad works in several different media and teaches drawing, figure drawing, colored pencil, pastel, oil and acrylic painting, and design and composition classes at The Art League School in Alexandria.

During her presentation she will describe elements necessary for successful, engaging and award winning artworks. As time permits, she will also critique selected artworks submitted by several members. We can all learn from her advice and apply it to our own art. For questions about submission/selection of artwork for critique by our speaker, contact Michele Reday Cook at Programs@DelRayArtisans.org.

This is one member-benefit meeting you won’t want to miss! Please join us at 7pm for refreshments and a brief business meeting, to be followed by Lisa Semerad’s artist talk and critique. Free to DRA members.

For questions about membership and the membership meeting itself, contact Drew Cariaso at Membership@DelRayArtisans.org.

Speak Your Mind (5/5-5/28) @ Del Ray Artisans Gallery
May 28 all-day
Cassandra by Kathy Turner

Exhibit Dates:  May 5-28, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, May 5 from 7-9pm

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words.” The Speak Your Mind art exhibit celebrates the relationship between art and the human mind as a form of nonverbal communication. For some, visual arts are a platform for advocacy, a way to raise awareness of a social cause, or to express a political message. Art is a means of self-expression when it portrays emotions, thoughts, or a state of mind. For others, the process of making art is itself a form of therapy to improve mental health or as an exercise in mindfulness. This show coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month (May).

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 5 from 7-9pm to meet the curators and some of the artists and enjoy the unveiling of the exhibit.
