Speak Your Mind (5/5-5/28) @ Del Ray Artisans Gallery
May 28 all-day

Exhibit Dates:  May 5-28, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, May 5 from 7-9pm

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words.” The Speak Your Mind art exhibit celebrates the relationship between art and the human mind as a form of nonverbal communication. For some, visual arts are a platform for advocacy, a way to raise awareness of a social cause, or to express a political message. Art is a means of self-expression when it portrays emotions, thoughts, or a state of mind. For others, the process of making art is itself a form of therapy to improve mental health or as an exercise in mindfulness. This show coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month (May).

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 5 from 7-9pm to meet the curators and some of the artists and enjoy the unveiling of the exhibit.

Opening Reception: Friday, August 4 from 7-9pm

Clowning Around by Gordon Frank
“Clowning Around” by Gordon Frank

Clowns have been the subjects of paintings and graphics for centuries. Clowning Around is an exhibit that reveals local artists’ inner clowns through art in fun, playful, sadistic, comedic, and tragic ways. Clowns have always evoked a variety of emotions from people. Many people are happy clown believers, drawn towards fanciful circus graphics or sympathetic weeping hobo clowns. Others prefer their clowns to be sinister figures lurking in dark alleys. Whether it’s a childlike whimsy or journey into a carnival of crazy clowns, it’s your world to explore.

Join us in this romp with a truly American genre at the opening reception on Friday, August 4 from 7-9pm to enjoy the unveiling of the exhibit and meet the curators, artists, and other art appreciators.

The Clowning Around exhibit runs August 4-27, 2017 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are: Thursdays 12-6pm (First Thursdays 12-9pm), Fridays 12-9pm, Saturdays 12-9pm, and Sundays 12-6pm. The gallery is free, open to the public, and handicap accessible.

Childhood Passions (9/1-10/1) @ Del Ray Artisans Gallery
Oct 1 all-day

Exhibit Dates:  September 1 – October 1, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, September 1 from 7-9pm

Childhood Passions by Karen Laurie Thomas and Pat Stacy
“Childhood Passions” by Karen Laurie Thomas and Pat Stacy

What were you passionate about as a child that you don’t have much time for now? We’ve all had childhood dreams and passions. Things that we did that brought us complete joy without anyone telling us to do it. We did it instinctively because it was playful, fun, and made us feel alive. As we grow up, we tend to lose touch with the ability to play like a child and the experience of doing things for the sheer joy of doing things just for fun.

For this exhibit artists have created artwork that honors our childhood passions that we tend to lose sight of as we grow up. Join us at the opening reception on Friday, September 1 from 7-9pm to enjoy the artwork that captures the joy of a child and meet the curators, artists, and other art appreciators.

The Childhood Passions exhibit runs September 1 – October 1, 2017 at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are: Thursdays 12-6pm (First Thursdays 12-9pm), Fridays 12-9pm, Saturdays 12-9pm, and Sundays 12-6pm. The gallery is free, open to the public, and handicap accessible.

Captured Beauty! A Fine Art Photography Exhibition (10/6-10/29) @ Del Ray Artisans Gallery
Oct 29 all-day

Exhibit Dates:  October 6-29, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, October 6 from 7-9pm

Artscape 22 by David Heckman
“Artscape 22” by David Heckman

Del Ray Artisans and Union 206 Studio present Captured Beauty photography exhibition, which showcases artists’ visions of beauty as fine art. While there is no universal definition, fine art photography is about how artists communicate their vision, whether an idea, a message, or an emotion. The camera is merely a tool to make an art piece that reveals the artist’s vision and produces a more personal – typically more evocative or atmospheric, yet aesthetic – statement. Like artists of other mediums, photographers use careful staging, composition and lighting of the subject, as well unique post-processing techniques and selection of production material to make an individual expression.

Ansel Adams’ expressed it best – “Art implies control of reality, for reality itself possesses no sense of the aesthetic. Photography becomes art when certain controls are applied.” Join us at the opening reception on Friday, October 6 from 7-9pm to enjoy the unveiling of the exhibit and meet the curators, artists, and other art appreciators.

Our senses and the apparatus in our brain—the sensorium—evoke emotional feelings of sympathy, appreciation, or gratitude, or something that is moving, heartwarming, or tender. The connection between our senses and emotions makes contact with our hearts through someone, something, or an event—be it a pat or tap on the head; or the feel of flower petals, hard steel, body parts or smooth glass. The Sensorium art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans honors how artists interpret the impact of our human journey through evoking the five senses.

Join us at the opening reception on Friday, January 5 from 7-9pm to discover these unique artworks, meet the curators, artists, and art appreciators.

The Art2 (Art Squared) exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery explores the synergy of art with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This show overlaps with National Engineering Week and includes workshops to engage STEM-interested public of all ages. Come see how creativity drives the mind to explore and inspires scientists to ask questions and search for understanding. Principles of symmetry, geometry and measurements are often used in creating beautiful artwork. Likewise, scientific disciplines can inspire and inform art, as with anatomy in figure paintings, geology in landscapes, meteorological events in dramatic compositions, and physics in 3D installations.
