The Main Attraction Show is FUN-derful for showcasing your Witty, Punny, Wacky, Schticky, Colorful, Silly, Quirky, Comical, Humorous and just LOL FUN art! Lookie! Lookie! This curated exhibition is open to all area artists for artwork in all mediums—everything that puts a smile on your face. Also check out the SideShow FUN-raiser “Can You Spare a Square?” (details in the FUN-derful call for entry). RESPECT: Unsung Heroes in Uniform

Digital entries due: Monday, May 16, 2016
Honor those in uniform—not just the ‘obvious’ professions (fire, EMS, police, military)—but all professions, such as: coaches/ teams, nurses/ doctors/ dentists/ vets, food/ restaurant workers, janitors/ maintenance, retail service workers, gym instructors, landscape workers, bus/ train drivers, and security. Keep note over the next few days of all the uniforms you identify. Artwork can be funny, thought-provoking, honoring a loved one, or expressing a point of view.
Artwork receiving for accepted exhibit artwork and Art-To-Go bin entries is on Sunday, May 29 and Monday, May 30 from 6-8pm. Show runs June 3-26, 2016.

A Call To Service at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital (DRA Members Only)

Call for Instructors: Grown-Ups Art Camp 2016

Proposals due: Friday, April 15, 2016
Seeking instructors for a diverse array of programs to be offered June 27-July 15, 2016. We will serve up visual art workshops (painting, photography, pen & ink, mixed media, digital, etc), crafts (knitting, crocheting, sewing and more), performing arts (music, dance techniques, improv, spoken word, etc), as well as artist development (journaling, writing an Artist Statement, how-to-frame, ‘where to find inspiration’, etc). We are offering creative play, education and growth to experienced artists, as well as beginners and those non-artist types who just want to engage and explore in the arts.

Creatures from the Sea

Bring to life the aquatic world’s frolicking, fanciful, sensual, beautiful, or beastly creatures—from magical human/aquatic hybrids, tales from old sailors, childhood images, the range of sea life, classic stories or your own. Artwork receiving for accepted exhibit artwork and Art-To-Go bin entries is on Sunday, March 27 and Monday, March 28 from 6-8pm. Show runs April 1 – May 1, 2016.

Surrealism: A Photography Exhibition

Digital entries due: Saturday, March 19, 2016
Push beyond accepted conventions of reality by representing in photography the irrational imagery of dreams and the unconscious mind… disorienting realist imagery often based on fantasy, nightmares, hallucination, and figments of the imagination. Artists are invited to submit original, two-dimensional photographic images. The final and accepted artwork may not be larger than 20″ x 30″, including framing and matting. Artwork receiving for accepted exhibit artwork is on Sunday, May 1 and Monday, May 2 from 6-8pm. Show runs May 6-29, 2016.

March Melee – An Art Bash

Digital entries due: Saturday, February 20, 2016
Submit your best and brashest art—big or small. This over the top art show is all about excess, don’t be shy. Strut your stuff exuberantly. Melee implies a brawl and malarkey means nonsense, so let those terms be your guide. Be bold, aggressive, silly, wacky, wild, frivolous, funky, startling, bizarre, over the top and around the bend. Artwork Receiving for Marketplace entries and accepted exhibit artwork is on Sunday, February 28 and Monday, February 29 from 6-8pm. Show runs March 4-27, 2016.

True Colors: Like a Rainbow (DRA Members Only)

Del Ray Artisans (DRA) invites member artists to use three or more colors of the rainbow in their artwork. The colors can be bold and bright or just a whisper on the canvas. Use other colors, color blends, black and white. The only rule is that the rainbow colors must be visible. Artwork depicting rainbows is acceptable, but must be portrayed artistically and in an unusual fashion.

Del Ray Artisans’ 2016 Calendar (DRA Members Only)

Members: Submit your best work to the 3rd annual Del Ray Artisans’ calendar! All entries are to be received digitally, so no physical pieces of art will be collected. There is no theme, and work previously shown at Del Ray Artisans gallery is completely acceptable. This calendar is a fundraiser to benefit Del Ray Artisans, but also a fun way to show your support for our arts organization and share your talent with the community.

Under $100: Affordable Masterpieces (DRA Members Only)

Del Ray Artisans (DRA) members are invited to create precious masterpieces priced at $100 or less. This “cash and carry” exhibit will allow patrons to take home their artwork at the time of purchase. Artists may submit new work or work that has been shown previously at DRA. There is no theme, but keep in mind that we are trying to appeal to a broad audience. Open only to DRA members. Coloring Book for Grown-Ups

We are putting together a coloring book for grown-ups as a fundraiser to benefit Del Ray Artisans. Break out your pen and ink, charcoal, pencils, digital drawing tools, etc., and enter your art for this cool book. Theme: “Around Alexandria” in the past, present, or even future vision or fantasy—Is that a sea monster in the harbor? A statue coming to life? English ivy literally eating that building? Explore Alexandria [real or imaginary] in black and white. Open to all artists.

Skeletons

Digital entries due: Monday, September 21, 2015
Explore what is under the surface—the framework, the understructure. See things just a little bit differently. Dig a little deeper. What is under there—literally or figuratively? Artwork depicting typical animal/human skeletons are acceptable if they are beyond the typical. 2D and 3D visual artwork in all mediums, as well as video and audio art, is encouraged. Open to all artists. This Call for Entry is an online form. All entries must be received digitally.

ALTARS: Religious Rituals (Members Only)

Del Ray Artisans and Art Latin American Collective Project have teamed up to present this unique artistic challenge to their members. What comes to mind when you think of altars? They could reflect places of heavenly worship or nether worldly sacrifice. They can be simple raised platforms or elaborate structures used for religious ceremonies. Think of them literally or figuratively. Artists, dig deep into your imaginations! Explore the use of altars in religious rituals worldwide and create your interpretations in any and every form of media.

The Arts Hancock County has invited Del Ray Artisans (DRA) members to be part of a very special Thanks Y’all art exhibit and event that they are hosting on Saturday, August 29 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. DRA members are invited to ship or deliver in person their artwork to Bay St. Louis, MS.

Au Naturel

Celebrate the natural and exposed, the pure and untouched, the bare and raw, and the candid. Share your interpretation of “natural,” whether it is a figure, object, emotion or feeling; an uncompleted project or unintentional step in the process. Think of expressions with no covering or filter; objects or beings in full exposure; and objects that are in their truest and most candid form and natural state. Art can be in 2-D or 3-D format and ready to hang or display. Open to all artists. This Call for Entry is an online form. All entries must be received digitally.

Art in City Hall, July-Dec 2015

The Art League and the City of Alexandria, in conjunction with the Mayor’s initiative to promote the arts citywide in Alexandria, continue to support Art in City Hall. This juried exhibit will hang on the second floor of the Alexandria City Hall. Members of The Art League, Del Ray Artisans and the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association are invited to participate. Building Bridges is a juried show between Del Ray Artisans and Six Degrees Consortium open to Del Ray Artisans members and invited Mississippi Gulf Coast artists. Artists entering this show are asked to visually interpret the building of bridges between peoples and cultures. Artists may interpret this concept either thematically or literally in any medium. Only 2D artwork only with a maximum size of 24″ x 36″ will be considered.

MIX: Adventures in Mixed Media

COMBINE two or more mediums and SHAKE UP your imagination. Mixed media compositions can convey visuals that are quirky, abstract, political, environmental and social. THINK: Paint, Graphite, Textiles, Jewelry, Found Objects, Collage, Sculpture, Shadowboxes, Altered Books and beyond. Del Ray Artisans and Artistic Artifacts have teamed up to create this collaborative juried exhibit. The juror is Rosalee Lamanna, a mixed media artist and 22-year owner of Beads Ltd in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Color Pink (DRA Members Only)

Artists have used the color pink throughout the centuries to evoke purity, hope, seduction, romanticism, and many other emotions. What can YOU do with the color pink? Will you make something sweet or sassy… sublime or shocking? This show challenges Del Ray member artists to use any shade of pink as little or as much as they like to create an artistic statement and evoke one or more of the many emotions associated with pink.

Nourish and Flourish: The Food Show (DRA Members Only)

Art inspired by food—realistic or metaphorical, but worthy of tasting, savoring, and digesting. Alexandria Art Market (Artist Vendor Application)

Applications due: ASAP (accepted through the final market on October 11, 2014)
Join Del Ray Artisans in its 5th season of monthly outdoor art markets on the lawn area of the Del Ray Artisans gallery. These markets give artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provide them with consistent exposure to the community. There will be six (6) monthly markets on the 2nd Saturday of the month (May through October) from 10am to 4pm, rain or shine.

Art on the Avenue (Artist Vendor Application)

Applications due through the end of September 2014
Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Showcase your most recent and best work, and list materials and retail prices on the back of each photo. Standard booth rate is $195 ($180 for Del Ray Artisans members & students). The first round of judging is the first week in June. From June through the end of September any remaining spaces are filled by the judges as applications are received. Art on the Avenue is held the first Saturday in October.

Morph a Mask! Make a Mask-erpiece!

A Mini-FUNdraiser to Support Del Ray Artisans Art Exhibits: Help support Del Ray Artisans (DRA) with your artistry and imagination! Come to the gallery NOW and pick up a mask for a $3 (or 2 for $5) donation. Decorate, transform, destroy and rebuild into a wearable mask. The mask-erpieces will be sold at silent auction during the “Metamorphosis” show. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these masks will be used to support Del Ray Artisans art exhibits.

Metamorphosis

Receiving: Sunday, September 28 and Monday, September 29, 2014 from 6-8pm
Metamorphosis implies a distinct transformative change from one form to another. Change can be positive, negative, frightening, or enlightening. Consider physical changes such as a caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly; philosophical changes such as a Christian embracing Buddhism or a liberal switching over to the conservative party; or personal life changes such as marriage, divorce, addiction and rehabilitation. Juror: Elizabeth Ann Coleman.

Del Ray Artisans (DRA) Gallery Without Walls program will have an 8-week (October-November 2014) show at the Shirlington branch of the Arlington Public Library (4200 Campbell Ave, Arlington VA). DRA is looking for artwork for this interesting and busy venue! Only DRA members are eligible and the Curating Committee will select up to three works of art from each artist. There is no specific theme to this show, but pieces with literary references are usually a big hit in this venue!

Put a Bird on It!

Receiving: Sunday, August 31 and Monday, September 1, 2014 from 6-8pm
Prove that embellishment can be art. Channel your inner Duchamp, your inner Jasper Johns, your inner Bird! Jurors are Laura Perritt, Architect Emeritus, printmaker, and fiber/mixed media artist and Mikeual Perritt, Architect Emeritus, printmaker, and photographer. Embellish everyday objects, recycled items, or even your own artwork, to transform them into new soaring pieces. But, you must remain true to the theme: all artwork must incorporate a ‘bird’, either thematically or literally.

SUITES: Scandalous, Uproarious, Intriguing Titillating Entanglements & Seductions

Shocking, funny, arousing curiosity, exciting, compromising, temptations… what do these words bring to mind? Show us in your own medium what these words mean to you. Make us laugh, make us blush… or both! Having trouble visualizing something? Look up each word in the “SUITES” show title for inspiration. Or, since our collaboration with the Little Theater of Alexandria (LTA) this year is with their production of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, dive into the screenplay for ideas!

Solo/Small Group Exhibit at Prudential PenFed Realty (DRA Members Only)

As part of its Gallery Without Walls (GWW) program, Del Ray Artisans is seeking proposals for four-month shows at the Prudential PenFed Realty offices from individual artists or from a small group (no more than six) of artists. In recognition that our member artists have few opportunities to showcase a breadth of their artwork, we will now offer this venue as a solo or small group exhibit space, with artists selected through this entry form and electronic submissions after review by a curating committee.

Eyes On The Border / Ojos a la Frontera

In this collaborative exhibit, artist members from Del Ray Artisans (DRA) and Art Latin American Collective Project (ALACP) are invited to explore universal themes from the individual perspective of each artist.
This exhibit is both a celebration of Latin American art and culture and a look at how we are all influenced by places, borders and boundaries, political, or cultural, real or imagined. Latin American artists living and working in this area, and Del Ray Artisans with their own immigrant experience share their roots and translate their realities into a vision influenced by the virtual world and globalization.

As part of its Gallery Without Walls (GWW) program, Del Ray Artisans is seeking proposals from individual artists or from a small group (no more than six) of artists at the Shirlington branch of the Arlington Public Library. The GWW program recognizes that our member artists have few opportunities to showcase a body of artwork, so we are partnering with the Shirlington library to offer this venue as a solo or small group exhibit space, with artists selected through this entry form with electronic submissions after review by a curating committee.

Art on the Avenue (Artist Vendor Application)

Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Showcase your most recent and best work, and list materials and retail prices on the back of each photo. Standard booth rate is $175 ($160 for Del Ray Artisans & students) if postmarked by April 1. After April 1, fee is $195 ($180 DRA/students). Art on the Avenue is held the first Saturday in October.

Love it or hate it, technology is revolutionizing the art world. This all-member, all-media exhibit explores the artists’ relationship between technology and art. Technology can inspires, challenge, engage or frustrate the artist. How do you feel? This show challenges all artists to examine their feelings towards and use of technology in their art creations. Computer-created art, digitally manipulated art, art made from electronic parts, art expressing your relationship with technology are a few considerations.

Portraits of Pop Culture

Popular culture is so pervasive in our society that it distracts the public’s focus from the important issues that shape our world. This exhibit portrays and comments on our culture through its portraits of popular figures. Let your artworks reflect your point of view about our contemporary culture and its icons, good and bad. All media art is accepted in this show, from traditional portraits and sculptures, to your own lampoons and caricatures.

Heads Up (FUNdraiser to Support Del Ray Artisans Art Exhibits)

In honor of Women’s History month, the next “Gallery Without Walls” exhibit at the Prudential PenFed Realty Old Town Alexandria office will be the Living Legends of Alexandria, featuring photographic portraits of women who have made a positive, tangible difference to the quality of life in Alexandria. Women (who are Del Ray Artisans members) are invited to submit 2D artworks to accompany this exhibit. Del Ray Artisans is seeking an organizer to plan and manage its annual Summer Art Camp program. Art Camp is July 14-18 and July 21-25, 9am-4pm, with a gallery show on July 19 and July 26 from 1-3pm. Art Camp is a summer day-camp for 3rd-9th grade students (8-14 yrs old), which provides opportunities for youth to develop their abilities and to appreciate and participate in the visual arts. The Administrator assumes overall leadership of the camp, including instructor selection and management of day-to-day operations.

Reincarnations

Receiving: Sunday, Feb. 2 and Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 from 6-8pm
We cordially invite you to re-imagine, recycle, re-think, re-use, repurpose, re-invent and redesign something otherwise headed for the landfill for this juried exhibit. Artists are called to submit 2-D and 3-D artwork created from discarded or found objects with at least a hint of its original form(s) recognizable. These juried works will be displayed together with Artcyclopedias, an altered encyclopedia book exhibit.

Primary Colors

Receiving: Sunday, Dec. 29 from 4-6pm and Monday, Dec. 30, 2013 from 5-8pm
This all-area, all-media show challenges artists to think beyond the ordinary by creating their compositions in the three primary colors. The three primary colors are RED, YELLOW, and BLUE. NO MIXING! NO altering hue or value of the 3 primaries by the addition of black, white, or color. You MAY use black or white to highlight or lowlight images! You may also use water or other colorless medium to thin or dilute the colors. Your composition MUST be primarily red, yellow, and blue. Each artist may submit up to 2 pieces of artwork in any medium for the show. Also consider entering shrink-wrapped 2D artwork or fine handcraft artisans work into the market.

Art in City Hall: Intersections of Art and History

The Art League and the City of Alexandria, in conjunction with the Mayor’s initiative to promote the arts citywide in Alexandria, continue to support Art in City Hall. This exhibit enhances the environment of Alexandria’s City Hall and promotes the talent of local artists. The exhibit will be juried by an outside, independent expert in the arts, and will hang for eight months on the second floor of the Alexandria City Hall. This exhibit will focus on the history and art of Alexandria from it’s founding in 1774 to the present day. Members of The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association, Empowered Women International, and Convergence Art Center are invited to participate.

The Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF) is building a 6-foot scale model of their Bevin Skiff, and we’re soliciting proposals from y’all to paint ‘er up! No entry fee. The completed boat will be auctioned off to benefit ASF and DRA, two outstanding Alexandria non-profits. This effort is a celebration of Alexandria, its seafaring history, and the spirit of its people. Not only that, but it should be a hoot as well!

Turn On Your Masters

Edgar Degas said: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” POWER ART makes others see familiar things in new ways; it evokes emotions. POWER ART can be big and bold, but it can also be quiet and simple. Regardless, it makes the viewer stop, and think. POWER ART is often a philosophical or satirical commentary. It addresses civil liberties, human rights or even the environment—that means POWER ART is often unconventional in both material and techniques.

Dot and Dash

Receiving: Sunday, Jan. 27 and Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 from 6-8pm
All work starts with a basic dot or dash. What types of marks do you use to start your creative process? This show is an investigation about getting back to the basics. Deconstruct and reconstruct your unique art-making style to interpret the theme Dot and Dash. We are looking for area artists to create in their own unique style—painterly, graphic, realistic, or abstract—in two or three-dimensions.

Telling Images, Juried Photography Exhibition (DRA Members Only)

Some photographs tell, compel, imply, or suggest some sort of narrative or story: character, place, mood, feeling, plot, past, present, future. Submit up to four (4) single images, each richly implying a story your viewer is induced to imagine from your visual vocabulary. Your topic might include people, or empty spaces that imply presence, in a
realistic or abstract style. Choose from your work a group that together tells our jurors what your eye is like. Their

It Runs in the Family!

Show us the art that represents your “artistic heritage” by presenting a collection of your own and your family’s artworks—that which inspired you and others. We are interpreting “family” very broadly (spouses, partners, in-laws, great-great-grandparents, distant cousins, etc). You be the “curator” and assemble a minimum of 2 or a maximum of 6 artworks (one per person in your family) that proves the point that art indeed “runs in the family.”

Outdoor Temporary Public Art Project

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts (ACA) is accepting proposals for the temporary placement or experience of art in public spaces through a special opportunity grant. The goal of this exhibit is to reflect everything that represents the U.S., including the actual artistic materials themselves.

Follow the tortured footsteps of Van Gogh and Toulouse Lautrec. Love Letters, the exhibit (2/4 -2/27/11), invites you to submit artwork inspired by art’s most powerful emotion—love. Open to Del Ray Artisan members and non-members. Artists may submit a maximum of three entries and are required to accompany each submitted artwork with a love letter to the artwork subject matter.

Baby It’s Cold Outside & Sock it to Winter (DRA Members Only)

An art show to celebrate and remember all things good and bad about winter. Show off your best works and help us support Sock it to Winter by donating a pair of new men’s or women’s socks to the homeless with each work of art that you enter.

Celebrating Movement (DRA Members Only)

Receiving: Sunday, November 21, 2010 from 7-9pm and Monday, November 22, 2010 from 6-9pm
This Thanksgiving weekend, we are celebrating movement! Bring in 1 (one) art piece that you think portrays
movement or motion. There will be fun, performing arts activities scheduled throughout the weekend, so think
fun, think fast, think movement!
We will also have a mini marketplace by the front desk throughout the weekend. When you bring in your artwork for drop-off, also bring (if you choose) items that can fit in art bins. This includes any flat art pieces. Foam core will be available for semi-flat pieces or to attach smaller items (such as jewelry). Artists can bring up to 5 items to put in bins, but please remember that you are allowed one item for artwork display.

City Galleries: Call for Exhibition Proposals 2010-2012

Proposal Deadline: Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 5 PM
The Office of the Arts and Alexandria Commission for the Arts seek artist proposals to exhibit their works in one of 12 galleries in the City. Proposals will be accepted from individual artists, consortia of artists, and organizations who work and/or live within the city of Alexandria from October 5 through November 10, 2010. Exhibitions will run for six months. All works must be original and only two-dimensional works will be accepted. No entry fee required.

Alexandria Art Market (Exhibitor Application)

Del Ray Artisans has launched a new monthly outdoor art market that will give members an opportunity to sell their original handmade art work and provide them with consistent exposure to the community. Each artist will be assigned a 10′ X 10′ space. Each artist is responsible for providing their own tent, tables, chairs and displays.

Blue: An Interpretation (DRA Members Only)

Blue: a simple word with so many meanings–a color; an emotion; a name. “Blue” has defined the careers of artists–Picasso had his “blue” period; Yves Klein developed International Klein Blue (IKB) as part of his search represent his artistic concepts. So, what does “blue” mean to you? We’re looking for your interpretation!

Art in City Hall

Submission Deadline: Friday, October 1, 2010 at 6pm
The Art League and the City of Alexandria, in conjunction with the Mayor’s initiative to promote the arts citywide in Alexandria, are coordinating a rotating fine art exhibit. This exhibit will enhance the environment of Alexandria’s City Hall and promote the talent of local artists. The exhibit will be juried by an outside, independent expert in the arts, and will hang for seven months on the second floor of the Alexandria City Hall. Members of The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association are invited to participate.

Once Upon A Time (Open to All Artists)

A nostalgic nursery rhyme… A beloved bedtime story… A favorite fable or fairy tale… Let your inner child take a flight of fantasy! Let your imagination bring your own “once upon a time” to life. Revive! Deconstruct! Reinvent! Create your own interpretation, rumination or fantasy. DRA invites all area artists to submit up to 3 original artworks that reflect this theme in any medium.

Fine Art & Fine Crafts Holiday Market 2010 (Exhibitor Application)

Undecided: A Dialog between Artist and Viewer (DRA Members Only)

This all-member, all-media show offers artists and viewers a chance to observe how we all respond to art—our own and that of others. There are no thematic requirements for this exhibit; however, your artwork will be displayed with the titles hidden from view. Beside each artwork will be a sheet on which viewers may write in a title for your masterpiece. “Undecided” is about the process of creating art from life and noticing how subjects, or titles, emerge. It is also an exploration of the mysterious ways in which the viewer is moved by the images or forms created. We ask the viewers to articulate that exchange by offering a title for a work that moves them.

Whether it’s their ethnic technique or the exotic appearance, artwork influenced by a foreign country opens the minds of fellow artists and patrons alike—displaying a visual passport to a new, beautiful and unfamiliar world. This show celebrates that global inspiration.
